Shutdown Corner - NFL

With the official free agency period kicking off less than 48 hours from now, there's been a lot of talk about potential player movement. You may have noticed that one name missing from any and all such conversations, though, is that of Adam "Pacman" Jones.

The Dallas Cowboys released him back in February, and he's available to anyone who wants him at midnight on Friday. And yet, I've heard not one little whisper about anyone being interested in him. Some teams have even gone out of their way to make it clear that they aren't interested.

And yet, Pacman remains optimistic. From Star-Telegram.com:

"I’m just working out. Staying in shape. I’m good," Jones said at the Indianapolis International Airport on Tuesday morning. "I’m thinking it’s going to work out somewhere."

And I think that's always the first thing that comes to mind when people think about Pacman Jones ... his eternal optimism and sunny disposition.

Maybe. I don't know. That doesn't sound right.

But I tend to think Pacman's optimism is spot-on. Even though there's so much controversy tied to his name, and even though I've not heard of one team being interested, there are a lot of teams out there who could use a solid cornerback. And there are those who would tell you (and those are pretty smart football people) that Pacman was the best corner in Dallas last year.

As to whether or not he can stay out of trouble, well ... to say the least, he's made it hard to believe that's possible. Can he perform on the field, though? I think that one's a clear yes. In a system that relies in a lot of man coverage from their corners, Pacman Jones can be, at the very least, a serviceable player.

His phone might not ring off the hook on Friday, but eventually, someone's going to either suffer a few injuries or realize just how big a hole they have at cornerback. When the time comes, someone's going to look him up.

Sadly, he will play again. As long as Al Davis is alive, players like Pacman and Vick will have a place to play.

Lose your old friends and move to a better life style and you might be ok, but some dogs (dawgs) can't change their spots. Good luck!

Unfortunately, TALENT TRUMPS ALL ELSE in the NFL. Money reigns supreme and this guy will play again. Bad or good, teams want to win and will do what they have to do to put a winning team on the field.

Oakland doesn't need him by the way. Nor do I, as a fan of the Raiders, want anymore problems or head cases on this team. We've had and seen enough of those. However, I wouldn't put it past good ole Al to take a look at him...especially if he can get him cheap. Al isn't trying to win a popularity contest as we all know. For that matter, I'm not even sure Al is trying to win a game!

No team should be dumb enough to pick him up, but I'm sure someone will. It might not be until closer to camp though. He really isn't that good of a corner, I don't understand the facination.

Thugman, Michael Vick, Ocho Stinko,Ray Lewis, Albert "Big Foot" Haynesworth. The list of undesireables goes on and on. All will be signed for big money and all will continue being who they have been. I am tired of hearing/reading about them and their kind. Are there any journalists out there who can write about something or someone else?

Lee W - please get your priorities straight. Dog fighting is actually more unethical than Ultimate Fighting as the dogs don't have a choice. Then comes Ultimate Fighting which is actually a sport - albeit a violent one (so is football). Below that is Christians fighting. Below that is people who profess opinions but can't properly spell - it's hypocrites.

I don't think Pac Man is that good anymore - time off is killer to an athlete. And saying he was the best corner on Dallas last year isn't saying much. Money talks, and if PM was that good he would still be with Dallas. At worst, Jerry would have traded him to someone if he had any skills-related value. I believe we have heard the last of Mr. Jones - that is until his next arrest. What a waste.

what a surprise mjd writes another smack article on the cowboys, calling him the best corner in dallas shows his complete ignorance. he had more passes defended, but it's because when newman is healthy, no one throws his way. the cowboys have two 2nd year corners better than him right now.
mjd, you're an idiot with an obvious bias against the cowboys. is it jerry jones? is it you grew up in some insignificant football town and are jealous (of what this point i'm not sure)? or are you just another northeast media douchebag who hates the cowboys from 30 years ago?
no, jesse g, the cowboys have absolutely no interest in bringing him back.

I agree with Scott E. Somebody will probably pick him up at a bargain rate, but I just don't think Pacman is that great of a player anymore. Too much time in hot water, and too much time off the field.

Jones wasn't very good at corner or returning kicks last season for the COWBOYS. There are free agents and probably a few coming in the draft that are better than him and without all the baggage. The same holds true for Vick, he was never a good QB, He was a running back playing the QB position. If you going to take a chance on a player thats had problems at least make sure the upside is worth the downside
