Shutdown Corner - NFL

Yesterday afternoon, I heard that the Dallas Cowboys cut Pacman Jones. I was very mildly surprised, but figured if Pacman kept himself out of handcuffs between now and next season's training camp, that he'd get a chance somewhere else.

After all, he played some serviceable football with the Cowboys. He never got back to the dominant level he played at with Tennessee before the major suspension, but he was good enough that some team out there could use him. And presumably, with steady work, he can get maybe a little closer to the level he used to play at.

And then I heard some wild story from ESPN that Pacman's being accused of arranging to have a man shot. This is a new allegation, even though the incident took place back in 2007. This is not the Vegas incident everyone's heard about a thousand times. Here's the ESPN report.

Now, there are very few things Pacman Jones could be accused of that I wouldn't believe. If someone said this morning that Pacman bit the heads off of every Barbie doll in a Dallas-area Toys 'R Us just to make the little girls of Dallas cry, I'd believe it. If someone told me that Pacman had invented Scientology as a way to con people out of their money, I'd believe that, too.

But I'm not ready to believe this one. Let's go over some things:

"The chief allegation is this, that while on NFL suspension, Jones arranged for a shooting inside that Atlanta-area strip club. He'd arranged to have a man who he exchanged words with inside the club shot at. Nobody was hurt in the shooting. The man Jones is accused of arranging the shooting with, is himself an accused murderer."

Okay. So this happened after the Vegas shooting and after everything else Pacman had been through. On one hand, yeah, it indicates that Pacman might be capable of that sort of thing. On the other hand, it also makes Pacman an easy guy to accuse. And we don't know where this allegation is coming from. If it's the other guy, who is himself an accused murderer ... well, I'm not taking his word for it.

And then there's this:

"We know the NFL knew about the incident in suburban Atlanta back in 2007. It was reported on. It was investigated by the local authorities. Nobody was charged. Jones was questioned. He wasn't charged."

So it happened in 2007, was investigated in 2007, and no one ever charged Pacman with anything ... and we're bringing it up now?

Ostensibly, the "Outside the Lines" people have more information on the subject, but they're going to wait until Sunday to report that. Hey, don't rush yourself, fellas. Feel free to float a story like this now with no real information behind it, and let people go ahead and assume guilt, at least until Sunday when it fits better into ESPN's programming plans.

The fact that someone has accused murderers trying to defame him speaks volumes. Trash begets trash.

Getting rid of this thug is a no-brainer. This is the best move Jerry "the enabeler" Jones has made since the Eagles game when Jerry was in the Cowboys dressing room after the game. Jerry pulled his head out of his a$$, looked around the locker room at HIS Cowboys, threw up and then re-inserted his head. It remains to be seen what his next smart a$$ed moves will be.

He should've arranged to have Jerry Jones shot before he got released. But, there's still time.

It’s a shame that someone that has so much going for him still finds ways to keep ruining his life. I really thought he was going to finally get his act together and straighten up. That’s the negative, the positive side of it is that now Dallas can free some money and get someone that can concentrate more on his job than stupid stuff like that outside of the organization. I hope Jones finally gets his life together and finds what he’s really looking for that will make him happy. Hopefully Jerry learn a valuable lessen on this, talent is good but trouble brings trouble.

How can you have everything going for you and to have it thrown all the way. Get used to the phrase "I'd like mine supersized, because that's all your gonna be good for in about a year or two." Post 9, I"m not saying he did it or not, the problem here is enough is enough. Just seems that things like this follow him, he's got some things he needs to work out and straighten up, so even if he doesn't make it any where in football he'll at least find what ever it is that makes himself find trouble so easily and have a good life. You have to admit that he has been in a lot of trouble and once you've done things over and over again , its goning to follow you, he has some issues he needs to work out.

4 out of 5 commenters here have extra chromosomes where they shouldn't.
Let's break one down, as this one particularly troubles me because it's from a Steeler fan and I feel somewhat associated with it. Ok #10 (ballz of steel):
"Jones is the next Al Davis in my book....."
I'm not going to bother reading your book, assuming it's even coherent.
"and oh by the way Pacman Jones if your reading this "YOU SUCK"
BURN! Yes, Pacman is probably reading this.
"The Steelers crushed your ass at Heinz field when you played there. Your preety sad dude."
Ha! Pacman, you sack! You are a sad dude. You played for a team that lost on the road to a 12-4 team! Why do you even bother waking up in the morning?
"How can you have everything going for you and to have it thrown all the way."
Uhhh...don't questions end in question marks? Am I supposed to feel compelled to answer this? Because I do, yet it's not a question.
"Get used to the phrase "I'd like mine supersized, because that's all your gonna be good for in about a year or two."
If I went to McDonald's and told the cashier "I'd like mine supersized, because that's all your (sic) gonna be good for in about a year or two", he'd probably look at me funny and think I was an idiot. And this would be coming from a guy working the drive-thru at McDonald's. And, he'd probably be right, assuming I said that to him.
    "Good luck LOOSER"
I picture him saying this with an L on his forehead. Keep making us proud, ballz_of_steel!

Wonderful guy, gets a guy shot with his entourage in Vegas and now we continue to make news about him as if anybody cares. He probably needs to work so he can pay for all the lawsuits he will face from the altercation. Maybe Ray Lewis can get together with PacMan and explain how to get back on track after two dead bodies.

Biggest Loser in the NFL, bar none. A close second is TO right behind him Jerry Jones. Jones needs to pull his head out of his ass, hire a GM to do personell, hire Shanahan to clean up the team and get some respectability back, and get his ass up to his luxury box and lock himself in. The man is ruining this team.

to me it seems like he got himself into trouble once or twice, yes he needs to clean up a little but the way espn follows him around all the time, seemingly continuously bringing up every minor crime he has ever committed, and this is proof of it - honestly, it was investigated, dropped the year previous, why is this being brought up now? it is just espn trying to make money off the story, oh and in the process ruining a person's reputation, seriously if you followed another player as closely as they follow this guy i bet you'd find out a thing or two they don't want you to know.
espn is a joke anyways, it is sports dumbed down and mainstreamed, nice to watch for highlights and things but for actual meaningful dialogue it's about as knowledgable about sports as sarah palin is knowledgable about politics.
