The New York Giants needed their overtime win far more than the Kansas City Chiefs did theirs, but both teams came away with victories past regulation today. In the Giants' case, their 34-31 win over the Atlanta Falcons ended a four-game losing streak that had them in third place in the NFC East, and at risk of missing the playoffs if they didn't turn it around. It wasn't pretty -- Eli Manning(notes) looked a bit off at times and New York's formerly dominant rushing attack couldn't put anything together with consistency -- but the G-men rode Mario Manningham's(notes) six receptions for 126 yards to the close win.

New York's defense raised considerable question marks by allowing two touchdowns from third-string running back Jason Snelling(notes), and Matt Ryan(notes) didn't throw an interception for the first time since Week 3. The Falcons were allowed to erase a two-touchdown lead in the fourth quarter to tie the game. But the Giants made it academic in the extra period by driving 49 yards on eight plays, setting up Lawrence Tynes'(notes) 36-yard field goal.

As for the Chiefs, coming into their game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with a 2-7 record meant that any win would be nothing more than a feel-good story. But KC held up tough, exploiting Pittsburgh's weaknesses for a 27-24 win the extra frame. This game was the eighth straight in which Pittsburgh allowed a return touchdown, giving up a 97-yard kickoff run from Jamaal Charles(notes) on the opening play. There was also a 94-yard interception return of a Ben Roethlisberger(notes) pass in the end zone by linebacker Andy Studebaker(notes), but that wasn't a score. The Steelers have now gone more than 100 carries without a touchdown from their running backs, and the constant attacks on Roethlisberger finally caught up when Big Ben was kicked in the head in overtime and came off the field with what coach Mike Tomlin later classified as a "concussion-oriented thing".

Backup Charlie Batch(notes) couldn't seal the deal in OT, and the Steelers gave up some big passing plays in the second half without Troy Polamalu(notes) to cover deep. It was Matt Cassel's(notes) 61-yard play to Chris Chambers(notes) that put Ryan Succop(notes) in position to win the game with a 22-yard field goal. The only good news for the Steelers is that the Ravens also lost, which keeps Pittsburgh a game ahead of Baltimore at 6-4. The Steelers and Ravens go at it for the first time this season next Sunday night.

LOL So lets sort this out. Matt Cassel struggled against a Steelers team last year at home when he was coached by Bill Bellichick, had Rand Moss and Wes Welker to throw it too, and had a veteran Defense backing him up. He BEATS a Steelers team when he has a bunch of no names to throw it too, young guys on either side of the ball, the last guy taken in the draft kicking it, and a rookie head coach calling the shots. Oh this is PRICELESS!

Any given Sunday, baby! I have believed that -REMOVING ONE BAD APPLE FROM THE CART-makes a huge difference in the morale of the team, and certainly the fans. I think Jamaal will take us to greater games. He has drive, stamina, and most of all heart. Sounds like someone else familiar to me, but this guy is in his own right. Keep it up Chiefs-the rest of this season is looking better every Sunday. Looking forward to next year!

Eli looked a bit off at times? Aside from a bad opening drive Eli was great. He threw for 384 yards on 39 attempts, what else does the guy have to do to get a little credit. He won this game for the Gmen.

Are you kidding me? Did you even watch the giants game? Eli threw for a career high for yards and had three touchdowns, his lone pick coming on the first drive of the game. Post must be a joke. Instead of just looking at the box scores why don't you post to a recap of someone who actually watched the game.

i agree. and that pick wasnt even his fault he was hit (i think his arm was hit as he moved foward?) which led to both the pick and the wably lame duck near pick before it. w/o him and umeniora and tuck we would have lost. and enough with these d line in pass coverage. it worked once out of 8 times. we are not the dolphins who pull off weird ass plays. we are the giants who make everyday plays spectacular....

Beaten three times now, but I just want to voice my support for Eli as well. I'm really stunned that anyone could say Eli looked "a little off"--and granted, he had that poor first drive pick--when he completed 65% of his passes for 3 TDs and a 112 QB rating. He looked as solid as he has all year and stepped it up on a day Jacobs could only manage 39 yards.
I can understand getting on his case for things like the pick at the end of the Cardinals game, but honestly, Eli is probably somewhere between 5 and 10 in the league among quarterbacks, if not hovering around the top 5... yet he's perceived as a lower third guy who can't manage a game. I never really get it.

if going 25-39 for 384 yds, throwing 3 td's to 1 int, and running an absolute clinic on back-shoulder deep passing (while the running game is underperforming and the defense can't stop anyone) is "off," i hope eli is "off" every game. Please watch the games you write about.
