It's too early for '09 season previews, and too late for '08 season reviews. What's an NFL blog to do in the never-ending quest to overcover the bejeezus out of the NFL? Offseason progress reports. Let's go in alphabetical order. Today, the New York Giants.
Free agents lost: WR Plaxico Burress(notes), S James Butler(notes), RB Reuben Droughns(notes), S Sammy Knight(notes), CB Sam Madison(notes), LB Edmond Miles(notes), TE Martrez Milner(notes), CB Brandon Sumrall(notes), RB Derrick Ward(notes), DE Renaldo Wynn(notes)
Free agents gained: DT Rocky Bernard(notes), WR Shaun Bodiford(notes), LB Michael Boley(notes), S C.C. Brown(notes), DE Chris Canty(notes), OT Andrew Carnahan(notes), RB Allen Patrick(notes), G Tutan Reyes(notes), LB Kelvin Smith(notes), TE Lee Vickers(notes), TE George Wrighster(notes)
Drafted: WR Hakeem Nicks(notes), OLB Clint Sintim(notes), OT William Beatty(notes), WR Ramses Barden(notes), TE Travis Beckum(notes), RB Andre Brown(notes), QB Rhett Bomar(notes), DB DeAndre Wright(notes), DB Stoney Woodson(notes)
Let's say you've got one glaring weakness, one overwhelming strength and one offseason to play around with your roster. Would your top priority be addressing the big critical weakness or strengthening the strength to the point where it might not even matter what else is on the roster?
The Giants went with the second option. They have a front seven that generated a very healthy 42 sacks last year, allowed fewer than 200 passing yards per game, allowed fewer than 100 rushing yards per game, and was in the top five in the league in total defense. They did this without (arguably) their best player, Osi Umenyiora(notes).
In 2009, not only does Umenyiora return to the line-up, but the Giants also also added Chris Canty, the best defensive lineman available in free agency, Rocky Bernard, a massive pile of beef that chews up space in the middle of the line, Michael Boley, one of the better young linebackers in the game, and linebacker Clint Sintim, a second-round draft pick who might have first-round value.
So the front seven is going to be absolutely filthy. It's hard to imagine that it won't be the best in the league.
That afore-mentioned glaring weakness is still there, though. I speak, of course, about the void left by Plaxico Burress when he decided to head out one evening and shoot holes in himself. The Giants offense was pretty much lost without him.
There have been free agent wide receivers available, but the Giants have chosen not to pursue them. Maybe the plan is to re-tool the offense so it isn't so heavily dependent on a number one receiver, and if that's the case, good for them. But if the offense is going to remain largely the same, and the Giants are hoping to get Plax-like production out of rookies Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden, then that's a losing proposition for 2009.
Progress: Offensive line coaches in the NFC East have got to be having nightmares about what the Giants defensive line can do to them. It's a wealth of talent that almost borders on unfair. Health isn't even a tremendously big issue, because there's such great depth. A good pass rush can win games for you. It is the one surefire way to cripple the opposing offense. The Giants have built one that should be superb, and they're banking on it.
Plus one game. 12-4 last year, 13-3 this year.

I speak for all AFC fans when I say this: THANK GOD the Giants are in the NFC.
Romo, Campbell, and McNabb may end up in body bags by the end of the year.

with ward and plax gone they lost a lot of fire power in the red zone.
yes they needed depth on the d-line,don't see what all the talk about osi is? he had 4 playoff games in 2007 against good tackles and had 0 sacks, overrated ,inflated sacks in one game against a rookie tackle that never played again, tuck is a beast, strahan is missed.
they are a good team and will battle with the eagles for the div, but i see more than 3 loses,
the offense will struggle with those rookies at wr.jacobs carrying the full load is not good,he is injury prone because of his height, missed a lot of games the last two years.and ward took almost half the load,
ward was great catching the ball out of the backfield, will be missed.

Really? Most people thought Haynesworth was that person. Even though he was in free agency for only 5 hours, it counts.
But yeah, the Giants d-line is frightening.

On offense I cannot wait to see the 2009 version of Earth,Wind and Fire - Jacobs, Bradshaw and Ware. Throw in our new H-back, Travis Beckum and this team will move the ball.

They don't defend against the run great ! They were 9th in overall rushing defense, 3.5 yards per game (or 56 yards for the year) behind #4 Philly... I'd say that's fairly decent...

but canty is a 30 tackle 1 sack guy, osi to me is a 8 sack guy, tuck is a force.
but to think they will be as good as when strahan was their? well i think you guys are getting a little to excited.
strahan was one of the top 5 de of all time, behind, white, smith, jones,
to think they can play like they did in that playoff run is a reach.
the eagles added 2 beast and get what bill belicheat called the best o-lineman in the game back.(shawn andrews)
i know they won't manhandle these guys,it will be a good battle.
the west coast offense is biult to get rid of the ball fast anyway.
i think you need to hope that eli can throw the ball without a #1 wr.he doesn't have a strong arm, toomer and plax were big targets, with the new guys he will have to be more like peyton. i never seen that in him.
pinpoint passing is not his strenght, throwing it up and letting the big guy go get it isn't there this year,as you seen in the playoffs. so chill out and wait until you see.

I've never been a fan of GM's but Reese is a helluva smart guy. Remeber during the SB year.....8 players drafted, 8 players played and contributed. Reese didn't draft those receivers just to kill time. He knows something.
Osi is not overrated. He's fast and smart and will emerge as a team leader. Strahan had some off years early on and Osi is still young.

i'm not hating, i'm being strait up.,i'm an eagle fan, i'm not set that they are set.
the o-line has to jell,i can say they are the best now with the talent they have, some are
on paper they are, peters they say is the best left tackle in the game?
belicheat, called shawn andrews the best o-lineman in the game?
the other andrew brother was a starting right tackle for cinci for 3 years, and they are moving him to gaurd,
they say a great run blocker, and gaued is easier?
but we can talk all we want, until those games start we don't know.
shawn was out last year as was osi, will they be as strong?
for me to say the eagles will have the best o-line in the NFL is premature,as it is for you to say the giant d-line will be the best.
dallas had the best team on paper last year, the last game was 44 to 6
