Shutdown Corner - NFL

Reigning NHL MVP and Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin was in the crowd at yesterday's Browns-Redskins game in Landover, MD wearing a faux leather helmet for the duration. Whenever I see that hat online or in a catalog I was always wonder to myself, "Who buys that?" Now I know: multi-millionaire Russian hockey stars who speak broken English and date women they meet on the Internet. It's a burgeoning demographic.

The CBS crew made no mention of Ovie as they showed him in his novelty hat before a commercial, which ensured that exactly 2% of the audience was able to recognize the hockey star.

Dan Steinberg writes that Ovechkin and teammates Mike Green and Nicklas Backstrom did some tailgating, signed some autographs and huying jerseys at the Redskins team store prior to the game (Ovie: #21 Sean Taylor; Backstrom: #89 Santana Moss; Green: #17 Jason Campbell), before heading in to watch the Redskins eke out a 14-11 victory.

Redskins players are frequent spectators at Wizards games. Hockey isn't as much of an A-list event for other athletes, but during the Caps playoff run last year Chris Cooley, Clinton Portis and Jason Campbell were spotted in attendance at the Verizon Center. Bandwagon jumpers.

ovechkin is becoming a very recognizable figure in the dc area. i'd say that 50% of all redskins fans watching on tv knew who this was without mention. still a little odd that no mention was made, but not as odd as the media is making it out to be. the capitals made a lot of news last year not only with their playoff run but also with ovechkins record contract.

It's really a shame that the game crew failed to recognize one of the best athletes in the world.

The NHL has branded Crosby as the face of the league. However, Ovechkin has performed better on ice and been super visable and accessible off the ice. The more I see of Ovechkin the more I like the guy.

It is starting to be fun to be a fan of DC sports teams again after years of being bad the Skins, Caps and Wizards all have a shot to go deep into post season play. I think AO is the best athelete in all of Pro sports. I agree with b. reed on all counts.

My guess is that you'd be surprised by how many DC natives know AO to some degree. Ovechkin has made himself a more a recognizable figure in DC than one would expect from a hockey player, especially given the city's major bias towards all things football. He's always being spotted somewhere, whether it be at Wizards games, charity golf events (youtube it, it's hilarious) or just zipping around the city on a segway tour. The dude has too much personality to be completely ignored and spends a good amount of time in the local sports media for either being awesome on the ice or ridiculous off of it.
That said, without a hockey jersey and donning that ridiculous hat he probably cut his chances of being recognized WAY down. It is DC, after all. :)

Ovechkin is awesome - gonna go into the conversation with Gretzky, Lemieux, Messier and might be the lead name on that list someday. And he's signed long-term with the Caps. Not only is he the best on the ice, but he's an awesome teamate (watch him pass and hit) and team spokesman.
Wish I'd been there yesterday to see those guys!
    Go Caps
