NFL to air Chargers-Raiders game in 3-D

The NFL will take a bold, technological leap into the 1950s next week when they will broadcast a game in 3-D at select movie theaters in three cities nationwide.

Next Thursday, theaters in Los Angeles, New York and Boston will show the Oakland-San Diego game, which will be shot with special cameras specifically for this test broadcast. The NFL calls this demonstration "proof of concept" and hopes that 3-D broadcasts will become more common in the coming years.

It sounds like a cool idea, but the NFL might have wanted to pick a better game than Oakland-San Diego. Watching paint dry in 3-D is only slightly less boring than watching paint dry in 2-D if you catch my drift.

Also, who chose those test markets? I'm sure that aren't too many theaters with 3-D capabilities, but you'd at least think they'd try to schedule a game between teams in the cities where they're showing the game.

3-D does seem to be the next logical step in game broadcasts though. Although we're not sure how many people are going to be down to wear those ridiculous looking glasses for three hours every Sunday.

Oakland should request to have the game aired in the 4th dimension, because in bizarro-land they're 8-3, JaMarcus Russell is an MVP frontrunner and Al Davis is the league's best owner.

So do the Raiders still have a shot to win the division? No one seems to want to win in the AFC West. What happened to the Broncos yesterday...my apologies to all the Broncos fans! You deserve better! Err, I mean, way to go Raiders! I've been a fan since the age of 5 but until someone...anyone...within the orginization shows me that they are going to take winning seriuosly, I'll just have to work on my sporting sense of humor and pick an NFC team to root for. I may adopt the Skins as my foster children until the Raiders come to their senses!

the raiders could make the playoffs if they won all the rest of their games they would be 8-8 which would be a league high in the AFC west. If the raiders played like they did against denver they played flawless and jamarcus actually looked like he knew what the hell he was doing for a change. The run game looked good. the raiders could actually pull it off if the broncos keep losing.

You must be from the east coast and don't care about a Rivalry Game like Raiders vs. Chargers. This rivalry has been going on for decades. Even though both teams are down on their W-L records that is no reason to think this would not be a game to watch whether it's in 3D or not.

What's the deal with the not-too-bright NFL not airing the game in the cities where these teams actually play? Not showing in the Bay Area or San Diego? DUH!

Be Mo - The Chargers play the Falcons THIS Sunday and the Chargers play the Raiders NEXT Thursday. Although this concept of 3-D is lame, Chris actually has the schedule correct.

Go Chargers - the Chargers have a very realistic chance of winning of AFC West only 2 games down.

I too have an issue with WHERE the game will be shown, it would be like playing a Bears /Packers game being shown in Pigs Knuckle, Arkanas.
although I am super hyped about this 3D stuff

It's just a test, not open to the public. It's for techies and media, invite only. But I still think it's ridiculous they're not included San Diego and Oakland, but I have a biased opinion on this subject: http://crazylilsportslady.wordpress.com.
My company is involved in this, not this NFL test, but live 3-D.

So if we going down to watch that game at Ratcom from LA, won't we be watching it in 3-D anyways? I am a bit confused here...Hopefully the same Raiders offense shows up that ripped up the Broncos yesterday in HD! 7-9 might just win the AFC West, the way the Bolts and Colts (Bronco version that is) are playing WTF knows...

Who makes these decisions anyway? The Chargers vs. Raiders, why would I even want to watch them in 2-D? ...With 2 teams such as these,is the N.F.L. trying to boost their moral and popularity?Let's just hope they can run the ball and throw it in a better manner than they're accustomed to...Maybe the Raider fans will look like the old horror films of the 50's...

Proof of concept???? You mean proof that the NFL owners don't feel they've made enough money on their product as it is. You want 3D? Go to a game.

I see some lawsuits arising from this is they accidentally flash an image of Crypt Keeper Al on the screen. He's scary enough to induce cardiac arrest without the added effect of 3-D.
