Busted Racquet, the Yahoo! Sports tennis blog edited by yours truly, has been swamped for the past 48 hours with the news coming out of Andre Agassi's explosive new autobiography, including tales of the star's heavy drug use, his hatred of tennis and his violent father. But it was an excerpt about playing tennis with NFL legend Jim Brown that caught our eye this evening.

In an extended passage from the book appearing this week in Sports Illustrated, Agassi details how he and his father hustled the greatest running back in football history back in 1979, when Agassi was just 9 years old.

As Agassi recounts in his forthcoming book, "Open" (out Nov. 9), Jim Brown was at a tennis club in Vegas one day complaining to the owner about a money match that was cancelled. Agassi's father stepped in, told Brown that he could play his son and put up his house for the wager. Brown countered with a $10,000 bet instead.

After asking the 9-year-old some questions about his skills (Agassi told him he never loses) and getting warned by the club owner not to take the bet, Brown and Mike Agassi agreed that they'd set the amount after he and Andre played two sets. After dropping two straight sets by a score of 3-6, Brown politely declined the 10K wager and offered $500 for the third. He lost, 6-2.

"Sweat running down his face, [Brown] pulls a wad from his pocket and counts out five crisp hundreds. He hands them to my father, then turns to me. 'Great game, son.'

He shakes my hand. His calluses feel rougher - thanks to me.

He asks what my goals are, my dreams. I start to answer, but my father jumps in.

'He's going to be No. 1 in the world.'

'I wouldn't bet against him,' Mr. Brown says."

Remember that Brown is generally considered to be one of the greatest athletes of all time. He is thought by many to not only be the best who ever played football, but is also considered to be the top lacrosse player ever too. There's little doubt that, even at 43, Brown was more than proficient with a racquet.

What was Andre's problem? He had to let Jim Brown win a close set to get the bet nice and high. What 9 year old doesn't know how to get a sucker on the hook gambling?

I thought Brown didn't like white women judges. I'm sure if he is hanging out at tennis clubs in the 80's that he is cool with old white men.

Christian I understand her comment and it is directed at the comments I made on the Mark Sanchez blog from earlier. Apparently she can't get over the fact that I think Sanchez is garbage and is over rated. And I'm the loser lmao.

Plus it doesn't sound like Brown was hustled (maybe you're not sure what that means) from what you wrote he told Brown he never looses, the owner of the club said not to do, and Brown watch Andre play... not quite a hustle

Wow, Chris Chase comes up with something interesting in his blog! First time for everything i guess. And you can say what you want about Andre Agassi, but, today, and for the last decade, he has been and is one class act. People love him here in France, he's so talented and open and charming. Sampras was better, but Andre really did more to help tennis and it's image with his turnaroud. Great guy, and I really want to get my hands on that book now....

A piece of crap might taste like candy but I wouldn't know because I would never eat something that was associated with an anus. You might as well be tossing a salad when you eat a hot dog.

There will never be another like Jim Brown. After GOD made him, he broke the mold! Players today get a nick and are ready for the injured reserve!!! Its obvious he didn't feel hustled or Andre's father would've been the one to feel those calluses!

That's not a "hustle". He should have thrown the first 2 games and then let Brown put up that house. Now that is a hustle.

"adding fuel to the fire of Jim Brown's hatred of white people:)"
Without even getting into your charges of racism, your claim doesn't stick. Agassi's father was the face here -- he's Armenian and Assyrian, was raised in Iran, and fought for the Iranian Olympic boxing team. Not sure you could lump him or Andre in as "white", and I doubt that Brown would have.

Hey Cody R, Jim Brown does not hate white people, he hates ignorant a$$ people, probably people like you. And if they happen to be white, then so be it. If you don't know a person, or the history behind what they do, and how they do it, then shut the fu*k up.
