Mr. Irrelevant makes good with big paychecks, big parties

Ryan Succop(notes), the man who was picked dead last in the NFL draft, and thus dubbed "Mr. Irrelevant", will soon be cashing some handsome paychecks. The kicker is expected to sign a three-year deal worth $1.2 million in the next day or so.

Also on the plate for Succop is Irrelevant Week in Newport Beach, California, and that kicks off on Monday. The festival includes a golf tournament, a regatta, a few parties and a banquet/roast in Mr. Irrelevant's honor. Past roasters (correction) have included Bill Walsh, Jim Everett, Mickey Mantle and Merlin Olsen (no Jeff Ross?).

I wonder if Succop, the 256th pick in the draft, ever sends gloating e-mails to Dan Gronkowski(notes), the 255th pick in the draft. "Ha ha! I guess you were just a little too impressive in your workouts, chump. Enjoy anonymity. I'll be at the regatta with Merlin Olsen."

After Irrelevant Week comes and goes, it's back to the grind for Succop. I don't know how much of that $1.2 million is guaranteed, and he still has to beat out Chiefs incumbent kicker Connor Barth(notes) if he wants a spot on the roster. There is work to be done. Life is not all regattas with Merlin Olsen, even if you are Mr. Irrelevant.

    Big paychecks for Mr. Irrelevant? Not the #1 pick....not the #2 pick, not the #3 pick, but Mr. Irrelevant? I know he's not suppose to represent the team franchise, but a big paycheck for Mr. Irrelevant? Now how silly is that? Mr. Irrelevant? Not the higher draft picks....not those drafted ahead of Mr. Irrelevant....not those players way better than him, but Mr. Irrelevant? We talking about Mr. Irrelevant....not a higher draft pick....but Mr. Irrelevant. How silly is that? We talking about Mr. Irrelevant! (And now you know the rest of the story.....good day!) Discuss!

    whats the big thing about mr irrelevant ? how about the un drafted free agents ? i think theres a lot more of them that made teams then the mr iirrelevant s lol

    This guy was a very good kicker for South Carolina in his time there. He also doubled as punter in his first couple years there. He offers a little versatility to the team there.

    haha not bad "Mr. Irrelevant" not bad at all. 1.2 Mil. to just hang out on the bench and kick a few balls now and then. Who knows maybe all the other KC Chiefs kickers may go down with some sort of Injury and Mr. irrelevant will have his time to shine and to step on the field and attempt a kick or 2!
    Chiefs need help so we will see what Mr. Irrelevant can do! haha

    Don't be surprised if he wins the starting job. The only reason he was picked so late is that kickers and punters are not valued as high as other positions. This guy is very good.

    $1.2 million over 3 years is the MINIMUM salary in the NFL. He is only guaranteed the signing bonus, if he gets cut before the season he gets nothing after that bonus.
