Shutdown Corner - NFL

On Thursday, President Obama will welcome the Pittsburgh Steelers to the White House to honor the team for its recent Super Bowl victory. But, just like in 2006 when the Steelers had a post-title meeting with George W. Bush, defensive MVP (and Super Bowl hero) James Harrison won't be in attendance. But he has a good reason:

"This is how I feel -- if you want to see the Pittsburgh Steelers, invite us when we don't win the Super Bowl. As far as I'm concerned, he [Obama] would've invited Arizona if they had won."

Usually, when a sentence begins with "as far as I'm concerned," it ends with an opinion, not an incontrovertible fact. Harrison's comment is akin to saying, "As far as I'm concerned, George Washington was the first president."

Of course the Cards would have received the White House invite if they had won. Winners get to go meet the president, losers don't. They also get the trophy, the parade and those hats that say "Super Bowl champs". I don't think James Harrison(notes) turned down any of those things, which makes his refusal to go to the White House a tad hypocritical.

When Harrison won the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year award, he didn't decline and say, "As far as I'm was concerned, they would've given this award to someone else if they had had a better defensive season than me." And when he scored that touchdown in the Super Bowl after returning an interception 100 yards, I'm pretty sure Harrison didn't tell the ref to take the points off the board because, as far as he was concerned, if Larry Fitzgerald(notes) had caught him, Harrison wouldn't have scored.

As far as I'm concerned, James Harrison is sort of a fool. If he doesn't want to go to the White House, fine. (Although I can't imagine why anybody wouldn't want to meet the President of the United States.) But don't make a lame excuse in an attempt to  justify your decision. Leave that for NFL referees

Thanks, Fanhouse

That's his right, but he does sound a bit arrogant. Maybe he just doesn't like politicians.

as far as i'm concerned, this writer (chris chase) is a steeler hater. he has very valid points in the story regarding the defensive poy award, and other examples. however, he goes on to insult harrison's intelligence by making fun of his spoken quote (who's an athlete, not an english major). he disqualifies his english prose lesson by saying at the end "harrison is a sort of a fool." which is not proper english, either. i agree with james k that this is a lame excuse to blast the steelers when there isn't much news out there. yes, harrison is being a little hypocritical by refusing the invite, but don't insult the man's intelligence and structure your entire article around that gaff. that's low class, mr. chase.

Good for Mr. Harrison. This story was idiotic. I can't believe the writer had the nerve to post this garbage.

Harrison's logic is correct. I respect his view and he should be allowed to make a choice without being called a fool! Why try and demonize him?

Harrison is not a retard. Give me a break! It's his right to decide whether he wants to go to or not. Besides, Mr. Harrison is probably busy right now working out and getting ready for at another run at an unprcedented 7th Superbowl title. Here we go Steelers, here we go!!!!!

Hey #2 Steelers Fan, Just because Rooney gave Obumer a jersey does NOT make him a Steeler fan. It makes him a typical politician. Mr. Rooney is a smart owner, but endorsing Obumer was a BIG MISTAKE.

As far as I'm concerned, if the President invites you to the White House, you go. I would love to meet the President and I didn't even vote for him. It is an honor to go.

I'm a Steeler Fan and I agree with the article. Harrison may have his reasons but they were ridiculous at best. Yeah, if Arizona HAD won the Super Bowl they would have been invited instead. *duh* News Flash James: Runner up doesn't get invited to the White House. You know...just so you know. I guess it wouldn't have really hurt to think this through before you gave some half-assed explanation. You should try it next time.

What everyone is missing is that this is a selfish act by Harrison. He should be with his teammates regardless of his personal feelings. He doesnt have to say anything to anyone, just be there along with everyone else who put in all the hard work it takes to be champions. I am very disappointed in his decision. Would Bettis or Ward even think about doing or saying something like this? I think not.

Im a steelers fan and if Harrison doesn't want to go , whats the big deal. the prez will just act like he likes them, and crack some korny prez jokes, liek all the rest, and thats it.

Harrison's a idiot. a great football player and a real talent, but an idiot. i was going to comment that his reasoning was greatly flawed, but then using that term would imply that there was actually something "reasonable" in his comment, and it's devoid of reason. i guess that $50 mil went to his head pretty fast.

There has to be a reason for his thoughts. Maybe he's trying to show that no man is so important that you have to cater to him, or that the celebrations over and that it's time to get back to business again. However, I can see how it could be taken as a snub to the president and as a representative of the NFL and the Pittsburgh Steelers , he should put on the smile and go through the motions. He could always turn down the trip to Disneyworld to make a statement.

I wouldn't want to go meet any President! Some say it's an honor, maybe back when Presidents were more honorable. Tell me which politician you think is anywhere near honorable today then go take a look in the mirror and you'll see a bold faced liar. What makes this Country great are it's people not the politicians, and you can take that to the bank(quick, before it's taxed to death!) GO STEELERS!!!
