Shutdown Corner - NFL

Chris Mortenson was just on ESPN News to break down the reasons for Brett Favre's retirement. Favre left him a long voicemail message explaining things. The video is above, but if you can't or don't want to watch it, I'll hit the high points for you:

• Favre says that physically, he's good to go, but he's mentally worn down. The only thing that would justify the effort of another season would be a Super Bowl win.

• Favre tried to downplay the effects of Randy Moss on his decision, but says the biggest factor was his own fatigue. Favre's agent says that the Packers didn't do much to re-energize Favre, for his season, and Favre acknolwedges that that might be true, but says it wasn't a big factor in his decision.

• Mort said that if Moss would've been a Packer, Favre would've committed to more than one more season with the Packers. Direct quote from Mort: "If Randy Moss were a Packer today, Brett Favre would be playing football."

• There are no immediate plans for a press conference.

(UPDATE: A news conference is now scheduled for 4 p.m.)

I don't understand why Favre would want to obtain a player who disrepected the Green Bay fans so much when Moss played for the Vikings. I don't care how good of a player Moss thinks he is, we really don't need him in order to win a Superbowl. We do need Favre though.

That doesn't really make any sense; the Pats didn't win with Moss and Stallworth and Welker and Watson and Faulk and the Pack have pretty good receivers. Plus, the Pack didn't lose because of their lack of playmakers, they lost because Favre didn't play well and because McCarthy was outcoached. If this was true, then Favre should retire because he's blaming everyone else rather than understanding his own shortcomings and trying to get past them. BUT, I don't believe that he's retiring for that reason. You're probably just trying to stir the pot.

I hope you're right and Moss had nothing to do with Favre's retirement. It seems though, that the "pot stirring" is being done by the media and not the fans. Regardless, I think Favre could have announced his retirement after the 2008 season regardless of the reason(s).

it's not just Moss it's the fact that GB hasn't done anything to raise the talent on the team this offseason to seduce Favre to come back for another. Jason Taylor was and still is available. that would have been the best acquisition in my opinion.

Get real !!! The Pats lost because they started celebrating 1 minute too soon. Tom Coughlin is a pro and his team was a mirror of that professionalism. pakdac was right, McCarthy was schooled and Farve and company choked. Rodgers looked good when Farve went down so Brett you were a MAN when you played but good teams pick it up and restart. I'm a Pats fan and I had a hard time swallowing Moss in a Patriot jersey. Hello PACK FANS this guy mooned you on " The icy tundra of Lambeau Field" If he slips and pulls any of that with Belichick he'll be history.

wow jimmy N seems to be a moss hater or something just because he didn't sign with the packers or something. do you go home and please brett favre at night or something? or did randy moss stand you up on a date or something. its obvious for moss the best chances for a ring is with the patriots and one of the best if not the best quarterback in the league. he holds the single season record of td catches because of brady, why would he want to leave that for a 36 year old quarterback.

I think its time for him to go I mean you still have a draft pick in Aaron Rodgers who showed that he could play for 2 games and besides Aaron probably wanted his time to shine and be the man but all in all Im glad to see Farve retire its time for change and time for the new era to begin. He's one of the best I've seen and he will be in the Hall of Fame for sure.

I have been a Packer fan since I saw the Packers go to the Super Bowl in the 1960's...I was only 8 years old. I pay tribute to Brett Favre for bringing prominence and respect back to a small town team. I am not prepared for Green Bay's return to mediocrity. Brett please change your mind...the fans want you back!

Look that's not the reason?! Can't be? Brett Favre showed last year that he's the ultimate warrior. He almost won it all. If he had made the Super Bowl, they would have won. So I take him at his word when he says he's tired, mentally. Cause we know he can still play well. We, here in Chicago, respect him more than any player. hate him; yes, but respect and fear him more than any player. couldn't the packers just say that he doesn't have to practice or something, to get him back? We haven't finished with him.

The Pack will do just fine with Aron. Give the guy a chance. As long as he stays healthy, the Packers will be contenders even without Farve. We will all miss Farve dearly, but sometimes you must just move on. Amen

We, as die-hard Packers fans have been spoiled all of these years with such a great quarterback. Yes, it's sad, but completely understandable. It will be difficult to not see him on the field, but we knew it had to come sometime! Like he told ESPN, anything short of a Superbowl win would be unsuccessful. That is a lot of pressure to be under--pressure from the fans and the pressure he puts on himself. He has been nothing short of amazing, and I'm just glad I got to witness it.

I think this is great. It's amazing how Green Bay fans live and die by one thing, (Other than Bow Hunting). There is more to life than #4. People from Wisconsin remind me of Nascar fans that actually cheer for a sport. Once you figure out how to stop living your life through Brett Favre, you might realize there is more to it. Congrats to everyone who will no longer be subjected to this stupidity. Love Minnesota Fans!!!!!!
