Shutdown Corner - NFL

This week's Monday-nighter might also be the Game of the Week in the NFL. The upstart Broncos of Denver gird up their loins to take the field of battle against the mighty Steelers of Pittsburgh in a game to determine which team might be mentioned alongside the Colts in shallow, midseason conversations about AFC teams that could make the Super Bowl. It's as high as stakes get in non-divisional Week 9 matchups.

Pittsburgh comes of a bye week after defeating another midpoint NFL power, the Minnesota Vikings. The Broncos are coming off a thorough beating at the hands of Baltimore, and in the minds of some, need a good showing tonight to cement their status as contender, not pretender.

Festivities start here at 8:15-ish. We welcome your comments, questions, and insights about all things game-related: from Denver's need to stretch the field vertically to Jon Gruden's inability to maintain a decent posture on a stool.

    MJD - what do you have against the Minnesota Vikings? First I read how you don't like Jared Allen, and now you're calling a 7-1 team "a midpoint NFL power". Your reportage on the Steelers-Vikings game showed that you hadn't even seen it. Sorry dude, I'll go elsewhere for authoritative reporting on the NFL.

    Should be a good game in the Mile High State. The Eagles played awful and the coaching was worse. How can you win a game challenging two calls and losing all your time outs. If Donavon is struggling then play Vick. He deserves a chance to play.

    @Diogenes
    WAAAAAAAAH!! WAAAAAAAAAH!! HE DOESN'T RECOGNIZE THE GREATNESS OF MY TEAM EVEN THOUGH MORE THAN HALF OF OUR WINS CAME AGAINST TEAMS WITH A COMBINED 6-26 RECORD, AND TWO OF THE OTHER 3 WINS CAME AGAINST A PACKERS TEAM THAT GOT BLOWN OUT BY A PREVIOUSLY WINLESS TAMPA BAY TEAM!!! A POX ON YOU, SIR!!!
    Wait for the inevitable Favre collapse. It'll be even sweeter when you East Dakotan ass wranglers get rolled in the wild card game and he throws 4 picks in the process.

    @ rugrat don't you mean you hate the broncos because you are a chargers fan. Also my friend is for the steelers but I am all for the broncos right now. Same for the Vikings. My dream superbowl would have these two teams play each other this year. A turned around broncos team determined to prove itself vs a turned around vikings team with a quarterback whom I love but really needs to retire or stop playing the boy who cried wolf game.

    John I: Don't give a flying f*ck whether he gives kudos to the Vikings - as a MN fan, we're used to things going wrong, and success is likely transitory (would you like a definition for that word?). Just not going to read MJD any longer, since he doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. As for you, sir, LAY OFF THE BLEEPING ALL CAPS KEY!! (Once you learn to walk upright.)

    Steelers D rules and defense wins championships! Ben is the new Elway and makes the game exciting to watch but I still love the Defense. Bronco's are going to be there in the end and I expect a rematch for AFC Championship. Being a Ohio native i have to root for the former Bulldog Josh McDaniels to do well. It is also great to see 2 young coaches holding on to good old smash mouth football!
