Shutdown Corner - NFL

While being really, really careful not to say anything that would make waves, Philadelphia Eagles "quarterback" Michael Vick(notes) said yesterday that he's not thrilled about his role in the Philadelphia offense. He doesn't dig the Wildcat, and if it's up to him, he won't be doing it next year.

"It would be hard," Vick said of returning to the Eagles, according to excerpts released by NBC. "It would be an everyday struggle. But I would have to take that time to hone my skills and get better. I'm excited about the opportunity I have moving forward whether it's with Philadelphia or another team." [...]

"I won't be a Wildcat guy. I can't," Vick told NBC. "It's a different style of play. It's almost like a hit-or-miss type of thing. My position is quarterback. That's what I was born to do."

What he does next year isn't really up to Vick, though. The Eagles have the option to keep him around next year for $3.6 million, though it's got to be seen as unlikely that the Eagles would pay that much for a guy whose only function seems to be to prevent the offensive from functioning smoothly or with any rhythm.

Not that that's Vick's fault, mind you. That coach Andy Reid brings him to stall the offense periodically is Andy Reid's decision. Maybe Vick can't make plays anymore ... maybe he can't throw or run. If that is the case, though, might I present this crazy idea to Andy Reid: Stop putting Vick in the game.

Again, Vick wouldn't talk about specifics for next season, and just reiterated that he wants to help the Eagles win a championship. Tony Dungy wasn't shy about talking about potential future Vick destinations, though.

"I told Michael to just worry about this year," [Dungy] said. "It's technically up to Philadelphia. If they want him back, he has to stay there. If they don't, there are some teams looking for quarterbacks: Cleveland, St. Louis and Washington.

"But I think a dark horse is Buffalo. They talked originally. There was some communication there. I think that could be a good spot."

Buffalo. Interesting. The Bills did pretty much admit that they signed Terrell Owens(notes) for the "wow" factor, to increase their profile and make a splash with the media. Vick would certainly do that.

But it's way too early to be thinking about that. Except for Cleveland. Michael Vick, Dawg Pound ... we probably don't want to do that.

EARTH TO MICHAEL VICK: You are a 30 year old who cannot read a defense and has never thrown for 60% or 3000 yards in a season. A BORN quarterback you are not.

Why would you want him in Oakland? Maybe in ayear ot two when he is back on track, they need a better established qb, cause Fat a-s-s Russell needs to go, I dont think Vick is ready to lead a team.

A total waste of money and a roster spot. He played on Dungy's sympathy, and Dungy played on Reid's. He's not your sons, guys. He's USING both of you.

does taking a qb out for a play destroy the rhythm? Musical QB week in week out destroys chemistry. Vick isn't hurting this team, how they use him hurts this team. Defense is set based on offensive personnel. Put Vick in with Weaver, Alex Smith, Celek, Jackson, & McCoy. A couple TE's with a FB mixed with speed of Vick and Jackson. If they don't stuff the box, pound Weaver. If they do stuff the run, get Jackson and the McCoy out in space. Heck spread, Celek and Alex Smith out wide and let a cornerback cover them at 6-4 250 each.....you can do almost everything with those 6. At the very least they should be able to convert a third and short .
The eagles have all sorts of tools to create mismatches but they choose to use McNabb for pocket passing or screen pass throwing. He throws the same in the pocket or on the run......so run him.
I don't like Vick as a person for what he did but he hasn't done anything to hurt the Eagles. Now lets spin a quote and make a story out of nothing...... The Eagles still appear to be a wild card team to me in the NFC along with Atlanta.

#1 - you might want to look at how good the Eagles are doing right now before you call them names.

Vick could back up Culpepper in Detroit. His best chance at being a starter or even getting any serious playing time.

Maybe he was "born" to be a QB - just not a very good one, and probably not one in the NFL. Maybe one more team will try him out of desperation next year, but after that, say hello to the UFL, Michael Vick!

I actually saw that interview Mike Vick did and its funny to me how this writer took out certain parts of the interview to make it more interesting than it really was. Mike Vick said it would be hard to come back to Philly as a 3rd string QB. I like how the writer conveniently left that last part out.......I believe Mike Vick will prove the haters wrong in the end

Vick is as much apartof the nfl as anyone else it is a dam shame that philadelphia don't use him for other than what that wildcat option. mr. vick if i was you no matter what my circumstances are i would pack my [profane] and leave the eagles like they are a bad habit. you see the eagles with donovan ,and andy reid they are not going to change whats' not working for them. so the hell with them and go somewhere ,where you can get better use of your career as a football player

i think the sole reason vick was brought in was to take the preseason media pressure off of mcnabb and reid before the season and apply the spot light somewhere else..... Its all about number 5 to the organization .... he didnt have to answer the typical questions about his failure to deliver and constant inconsistency instead it was questions about Vick

I have to thank the Philadelphia Eagles, because Michael Vick was running out of oxygen, so the Philly Eagles gave him some life. Now, he needs to venture out to somewhere else, starting next season, or when trading begins. To resurrect their previous WINNING SEASONS!!!!! He can run, pass and do them NFL martial arts on the field!!!!! Kinda kidding on that part.......... GO VICK!!!!!!!!
