Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin says he recently avoided a carjacking because his would-be robbers recognized him.

From NBCDFW.com:

Michael Irvin said he was driving to the gym when robbers pulled alongside him and flashed a gun at him along Marsh Lane near the Bush turnpike at about 9 p.m.

Irvin, who was driving a new, white Range Rover, said a truck followed him to a stoplight.

"I was looking in my rearview, and I saw this black truck flying up behind me," he said.

The passenger rolled down his window and pointed a gun at him. Irvin said his work on the field may have saved his life -- because the would-be carjacker recognized him.

"He put it away, because he recognized me. He said, 'Hey, Mike Irvin, what's up? Mike Irving, man, we are big Cowboy fans,'" Irvin said.

So I guess Pacman Jones is back in Dallas?

While it's great news that Michael Irvin is safe and with Range Rover, I have to say, something about this story sounds a little off. Clearly Michael Irvin is a paragon of virtue and would never feel the need to embellish anything. But a few of this story's details (carjackers that pull up to stop lights and attempt to carjack from the passenger seat of another vehicle, armed men stopping "for a few minutes" to talk to would-be robbery targets at a stop light at 9 p.m.) seem a little too neat and tidy.

And it's a good thing it wasn't T.O. that was at the stop light. Who knows what would have happened if the jackers had been fans of Cris Carter.

The story on ESPN was a bit more vague, but the vagueness made more sense than this. Guess we'll see what more "details" come out shortly.

He was cruising an open air drug market. Usually, in those areas, the gang members are heavily into turf. He got the word that this was the new spot. the gang members came to jack him because most people in that area are probably very poor. But when they saw it was him. everyone knows his MO. they knew he was looking to score some drugs. Now, the people that work that block know that when they see a brand new white Range Rover; it's Mike and he's looking to score.
That's why the fake i was going to a gym and that's why i was in this bad area of town. But as the blog is saying most people work out in the morning not 9PM.

Sam Spade~Do you really think you know everything? Since you seem to have details of this story beyond what the reporter or anyone else has, please tell us what area he was in. I mean it. Specifically describe the two crossroads he was at during this incident. Your comment that "Usually, in those areas, the gang members are heavily into turf. He got the word that this was the new spot. the gang members came to jack him because most people in that area are probably very poor" gives one the impression that you are extremely familiar with the D/FW area drug scene. You also told us he was in the "bad area of town." Do you live in the D/FW area? Do you make a habit out of purchasing drugs in the D/FW area? If you can answer both questions with a "yes" then you might have some ground to stand on. Otherwise, you might as well confess that you are just spewing nonsense about something you know very little about. So...you don't like Irvin? You don't like the Cowboys? That's fine. But, let's not get carried away with stories about your expertise in these matters. It's one thing to agree with the author of this blog. It's a whole other matter when you start embellishing to make yourself sound more credible. I'll wait for your answer to see which one you are. Even if you do manage to find out what crossroad he was at, you need to understand that I have lived in the D/FW area for 40 years and know it well. If this location does not jive with your account, then you are just another moronic hater. Is that simple and plain enough for you?

Plus, the fact that Irvin contended that the pipe was not his does not exclude the possibility that he used it. People don't treat crack pipes like a toothbrush. They tend to "pass it around." He could have been telling the truth. But, didn't Irvin offer to take blood and urine tests after this incident? Didn't he pass all of them? I would propose that your understanding of this previous incident is based more on what you want to believe rather than any sense of factual certainity. The same applies to your current opinion of the latest incident. You have no idea what really happened and decided to embellish it with your own assumptions to paint a picture that jives with your agenda. Irvin is no saint. But, there is a distinct possibility that this story happened just as he told us. The fact that you cannot accept this says more about you than anything about him. The fact that you offered up made-up details to validate your thoughts exposes you as a complete fraud. In this case, your perception is not our reality. That only works when one's perception is credible and unbiased. Neither seem to be the case here.

Come on Sam Spade....give us those details that you are holding back. Tell us all what street and area of town he was in. The longer you wait to reply, the better the chance that you are currently looking it up and researching what areas are "bad" in the D/FW area. Please don't tell us that you had no idea what you were talking about when you posted that garbage. That would be hilarious. Your silence speaks volumes.

Samoyed--touch a nerve? Although in fairness, I doubt Irvin cruises bad neighborhoods lookin to score. I'm sure he has someone appointed to do that for him.
This could only happen to the team in Dallas. Maybe the gunmen let him go out of professional courtesy.
You know, like cops not giving other cops tickets.

I think this story is pure b.s. laying the ground work for an excuse to justify all his homeboys like "plax" carrying around loaded weapons. i'd love to know what crack house he happened to be near. the gym at 9pm? the only thing that rings true wuld be an armed "bro" being a cowboy fan

#23~More like a funny bone. I guess we are are developing a list of potential morons today. Accordingly, your inciteful conclusion that "This could only happen to the team in Dallas." should place you near the top of the list. Dallas is the only team in the NFL to have any issues with the law? Have a clue. Nice try.

At least #25 added some humor to the equation. (Take note haters.) That's the proper way to hate. There are no moronic assumptions within that line. It's short and sweet. It's also pretty funny.
