Shutdown Corner - NFL

The last time an NFL Draft went by and the Miami Hurricanes didn't have a player go in the first round, Nancy Kerrigan was recovering from taking a pipe to the leg, the Bills were mourning their fourth consecutive Super Bowl loss, "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" was released on video, and Anthony Edwards and George Clooney were starring in the first episode of "ER."

The next year, The U started a streak of players being drafted in the first round that will last up until 2009, when, oddly enough, "ER" finally went off the air. Here's what the streak looked like:

1995: Warren Sapp
1996: Ray Lewis
1997: Yatil Green, Kenard Lang, Kenny Holmes
1998: Duane Starks
1999: Edgerrin James
2000: Bubba Franks
2001: Dan Morgan, Damione Lewis, Santana Moss, Reggie Wayne
2002: Bryant McKinnie, Jeremy Shockey, Phillip Buchanon, Ed Reed, Mike Rumph
2003: Andre Johnson, Jerome McDougle, Willis McGahee, William Joseph
2004: Sean Taylor, Kellen Winslow, Jonathan Vilma, D.J. Williams, Vernon Carey, Vince Wilfork
2005: Antrel Rolle
2006: Kelly Jennings
2007: Brandon Meriweather, Jon Beason, Greg Olsen
2008: Kenny Phillips

And the "2009" section will read, "no one."

That's an astounding run, Hurricanes. I'd advise fans of the Hurricane program not to despair about the streak ending, because it's so amazing and unlikely to ever be equaled, but I'm pretty sure all the despair there focuses more on seasons that end in the MPC Computer Bowl, in no bowl, or in the Emerald Bowl.

Cornerback Bruce Johnson's the only Hurricane who will be drafted this year, but it's not likely to be on the first day. If someone ends up taking him in the first round, it will be because some general manager has a deep, twisted sentimentality for Miami, Michael Irvin knocked him out and made the draft pick for him, or because someone hired Matt Millen at the last minute.

I really hope the U gets back to battling for a national title every year especially if Florida stays in contention then rivalry week would get a lil better now that Michigan blows

Good thing my Raiders took Rickey Dudley a pick or two ahead of Ray Lewis in 96. Very shrewd. To add insult to injury, Lewis cut in front of Dudley and picked off a pass in the end zone to seal the win in the season opener that year.

Nah, not even Millen would draft him in the first, unless he also converted him to WR, and OH DEAR GOD DON'T LET THAT HAPPEN AGAIN....

Boo Hoo Hoo..Miami doesn't have a first rounder in the draft this year..Think about this. Alot of those guys on that list are Garbage and were not worthy of first round picks anyway..For every Sean Taylor or Ed Reed or Ray Lewis, you got twice as many Mike Rumps, Bubba Franks, or Kenard Langs...

i counted around 5 maybe 6 sure fire hall of famers. those being, Warren Sapp, Ray Lewis, Reggie Wayne, Ed Reed, Andre Johnson. I may have missed one, and maybe someone else could make it 6, but those five guys will make the hall of fame... yeah there are crappy guys but still. for that many guys and 5 of them making the hall of fame is pretty good
