Shutdown Corner - NFL

NBC might want to trot Matt Millen out in front of the cameras like nothing ever happened, but WDIV, NBC's affiliate in Detroit, isn't about to forgive or forget what he did to the Lions. From the Detroit Free Press:

Every time a certain familiar face showed up on camera Sunday during NBC's Super Bowl pregame show, Channel 4 ran a scroll at the bottom of the screen:

"Matt Millen was president of the Lions for the worst eight-year run in the history of the NFL. Knowing his history with the team, is there a credibility issue as he now serves as an analyst for NBC Sports?"

Ah, if only the NFL was like professional wrestling. Matt Millen could put on a mask, get a new set of tights, and just like that, have a whole new identity. "Hi, I'm Bob Costas, alongside Jerome Bettis and The Masked Franchise Destroyer ... "

He will forever be Matt Millen, though, and the name Matt Millen will forever be synonymous with losing. I've written about this before, and I don't think that being an absolute train wreck of a general manager means that Matt Millen couldn't also be a good analyst.

At the same time, of course, I also couldn't blame anyone in Detroit if they held a grudge against Millen for the next, oh, 1,000 years or so. I'll readily admit that if he did that kind of a hatchet job on my favorite team, I'd have no interest in ever hearing any ignorant word that ever came out of his mouth.

Outstanding work, Channel 4. I think this is something we can expand and use in all sports, on all networks. When Tony Kornheiser starts talking on Monday nights, we can have a scrolling warning that reads, "CAUTION: In two years of work here, this man has never said anything that has added any value whatsoever to a broadcast, and we seriously doubt that he's going to start now."

Maybe there is a severe shortage of sports analysts? I really don't understand this either....as it would be like the Westminster dog show trotting out Michael Vick as their commentator...(If there is commentary at those...I guess I don't know!). Couldn't they find anybody better?...anyone?....Bueller?

What was up with NBC audio and visual during the Superbowl? What a way to be on the grand stage of sports and they had more difficulty than a Mr. Microphone. Switch to Fox next year!!!!

Make it mandatory across the board. There should be a nepotism warning, too. Something like: "Viewer Advisory - This man only has this job because his father was a great announcer. Any similarity to the parent is purely accidental."

I loved Millen's pick right before the game: "Barring turnovers, I like the Cardinals". What a bold pick. Barring the Cards scoring more points, I liked the Steelers.

Watching Millen talk about football in his prosthetic Madden tone is akin to watching Pee Wee Herman talk about mating habits of desert tortoises.

What's unfortunate is that most of Detroit, like myself, probably turned off NBC immediately every time his face showed up on screen and didn't get to see the gag.

Let's face it anyone can be an analyst nowadays. I mean Tony Siragusa, Millen, the ENTIRE FOX NETWORK... basicaly all you need to do is become a well known player or coach or G.M. in the NFL and you have a job locked up once you are done with it. By the way, did Frank Caliendo (the comedian) have more wins then everyone else for FOX's "expert" analysis of games every Sunday.

The main one at fault for what Millen did in Detroit is the ownership. They stood by and watched him stumple his was through eight years.

What I would like to know is how can a guy who screwed an organization for possibly the NEXT decade get a sweet plumb job to work the super bowl a month after getting canned...(Finally!) Kind of like Eric Mangini getting a head coaching job a WEEK after guiding the Jets to absolutely nothing for 3 years....Must be nice eh!? I was just laid off, maybe I'll inquire about that job in Kansas City, or call the NFL for a ref position.....right?
