Shutdown Corner - NFL

In a dismal year for the Cleveland Browns, wide receiver/returner Josh Cribbs has proved to be one of the only bright spots. Last month he showed he's equally good off the field.

The Pro Bowler traveled to Berea, Ohio, to walk onto the field on senior night with the son of one of his former college coaches. Michael Drake, a senior receiver at Stow High School, lost his father, Mike, in 2005 to lymphoma. He had assumed he'd be accompanied by his mother and sister for senior night introductions and was stunned when he saw Cribbs arrive minutes before the game.

''I looked, then looked away, then said, 'Why are you here?''' Michael recalled. ''I was shocked.''

A receiver, cornerback and holder for extra points, Michael said Cribbs offered advice before his final game.

''He said, 'Play your heart out. This is it. Give it your all. Don't ever stop on any play. Keep pushing,''' Michael said. ''I almost felt worried. I didn't want to look bad for him.''

Michael's late father recruited Cribbs to play at Kent State and served as a father figure to the D.C. native during his time at Kent. Mike Drake was the offensive coordinator for the Golden Flashes during Cribbs' freshman and sophomore seasons. Cribbs played quarterback in college and credits Drake for helping him drive home the fundamentals that he still uses today. So, when the idea of returning for senior night was pitched to Cribbs this summer, he didn't hesitate.

It's a small gesture, but it says a lot about the character of Cribbs. He apparently didn't feel the need to talk about it publicly; this happened Oct. 30 and, as far as I can tell, yesterday's report in the Akron Beacon Journal is the first it's been mentioned. Similarly, Drake's mother is quoted in the piece as saying that Cribbs took great pains to underplay his presence at the game for fear of taking away the spotlight from Michael and the other seniors. This shows a humility that other professional football players could sometimes stand to emulate.

Cribbs is back on the field Monday night when the Browns host the Baltimore Ravens.

A bright spot not only for the Browns, but for football in general. With all the bad press players bring upon themselves, not their respective teams, but themselves, Josh Cribbs did a wonderful thing. I can relate with Michael Drake in that I lost my father at the age of 7. I was in the 1st grade. Young Mr. Drake did have his dad up to his senior year in high school. I hope Mike's team won. To Josh Cribbs, your blessing is coming. Wait for it.

josh is a stand up guy, he knows and is loved by people in the city, the inner city and suburbs. i personally see him about once or twice a month as he waits in line at my club, patiently unlike others nfl and nba players that act as if they should always get in free and be catered to aswell. josh next time i see you im gonna personally escort you straight to v.i.p. because as my beloved cleveland browns continue to struggle your play has remained pro-bowl caliber and as a person you are clevelands mvp and v.i.p.

That was a wonderfull thing Josh Cribbs did. His mother must be so proud of him. Way to go Cribbs! I love to read about professional ball players that young athletes can look up to and emulate in a positive way!

That's very impressive. All to often it seems people just go on with there day in/day out lives. This NFL player didn't have to do that, but he did. And I especially like the fact that he did as much as possible to not advertise that he was coming so the night wasn't all about Cribbs!
He has a lot of class imo!

A man giving up the spotlight to give another a time to be inspired. Men do cry and this one is doing it right now. My thoughts and prayers for the Drake family and cheers to Cribbs. I usually love stories that velittle the aBrowns but even the most deriding opponents of the Browns give a heads up to MR CRIBBS

I wonder if this kind gesture will be reported every hour on the hour. Like when an athlete makes a mistake. Actually athletes make regular visits like these every year. They seldom get press. But a DUI - now thats a story.

Sometimes when you take a player off the field and out of the pads, you get a chance to see a real role model and good person. Browns better give him a good new deal or we will lose the best player and leader by example on and off the field that we have. Cribbs should get a franchise deal! Karma shall await the coach and managements decision. Well if Cribbs didn't wanna toot his own horn , let's do it for him! BEEP BEEP!

Kudos to Josh. What a great thrill for the young man. Class act. This is the kind of press we never hear enough about of course it probably tells us more about Josh's ego than anything else. Wish there was more like him.
