Shutdown Corner - NFL

I miss Tony Kornheiser on Monday Night Football.

Those are words I never thought I'd write, but four weeks of listening to his replacement, Jon Gruden, has made me long for the days of the awkward comments, bad timing and non sequiturs that defined Kornheiser's three-year tenure in the MNF booth.

It's not that Gruden is worse than Kornheiser, because he isn't. Obviously Gruden knows a ton about football -- more than Kornheiser, or myself, or you could ever dream of knowing -- but he isn't yet able to channel his vast knowledge of the game into something palatable for a mass TV audience. At times he can be too wonky and pepper his monologues with so much jargon that it leaves the most knowledgeable of fans scratching their heads. At other points Gruden dumbs down his comments to such a degree that he's left speaking completely in cliche and trite hyperbole.

Here's an exmple of the latter from last night's Packers-Vikings game:

Jared Allen(notes) is having a career night. Earlier he just shows sheer relentlessness. His factor grade is off the charts. The man will not quit. He beats you with his stamina, his conditioning. He plays with great hands. But that motor never stops.

That's scintillating, insightful stuff.

Unlike Cris Collinsworth, Troy Aikman or Tim Ryan (my favorite NFL analysts), Gruden rarely says anything that good NFL fans haven't already noticed themselves. Sometimes he comes close (like when mentioning a team's zone blocking schemes or calling out defensive formations), but even when he does that he still bogs himself down with those tired platitudes.

None of this should come as a surprise, of course, since Gruden has been announcing games for exactly a month. ESPN thrust him into the most high-profile of jobs with next-to-no prior experience. A complete lack of preparation never stops television networks making announcing hires, even though it's a preposterous concept when you really think about it. Would an NFL team hire a coach with no experience? (Other than the Bucs, who replaced Gruden with a guy less qualified for that job than Gruden is for his.)

As I wrote in May when Gruden's hiring was announced:

Just because somebody is good at football doesn't mean they're qualified to talk about it on television. They're two different skill-sets. Newspapers don't hire athletes to write about sports because it's accepted that writing isn't easy. Bad writing is also instantly recognizable.

But, for some reason, television networks assume that clearly, accurately, cleverly and insightfully describing the action in a sporting event and disseminating that information to viewers of varying knowledge levels is so easy that somebody like Jon Gruden can dive right in without any problem.

It's still very early in Gruden's broadcasting career and each of the problems I've mentioned can be corrected upon and improved. (Although we're stuck with his gratin' Midwestern accent and annoyin' habit of droppin' "G"s.) But therein lies another issue: Will we even get to see the fruits of Gruden's broadcasting labors?

Nobody expects Gruden to stay in the booth for long. Most people have him pegged for an NFL (Washington, Dallas) or college (Notre Dame) job in 2010 or, at the latest, 2011. By the time Gruden improves (if he even does), he'll likely be on his way out the door.

Back to the inevitable Kornheiser-Gruden comparisons. On last night's live blog MJD said he'd rather listen to Gruden sing for three hours rather than have to endure another season of Kornheiser. I understand his point. My feeling, though, is that Kornheiser was hired to play a role. ESPN wanted him to be the jester of the MNF broadcast and, like him or not, that's what he did. The network hired Jon Gruden to be a top-notch analyst. Through one month of the season, he's far from one.

It's funny - I've actually been enjoying his perspective. I agree that he's not as polished as Aikman or Collinsworth, but he's a million times better than Kornheiser in my opinion. But then I also enjoyed Dennis Miller, so what do I know?

What a hater! Would you prefer Dennis Miller again? Unbelievable. Sure he might say stuff we already know, so did Madden and he had 30 years of experience. The whole idea is Gruden was an NFL coach who had success and so he represents a person of authority. What he says reinforces what we are observing. I'm interested in what people in the know have to say, as long as it's not retarded. Gruden saying stuff I was thinking makes me want to keep watching. Listening to hot air from Miller and Kornheiser didn't.

Why can't we simply have Tirico and Jaws call the game? Seriously, why not just let Gruden jump at the next coaching opportunity that comes his way and replace him with absolutely no one? Tirico and Jaws are perfectly capable of carrying and describing a game all by themselves.

As long as Kornheiser is out of there anyone is better. Gruden does a good job and goes with Mike and Jaws well. If you want to fire someone now that Kornheiser is done (his fear of flying when Madden stepped down was his way of getting out of the fact that he was let go and never belonged in the booth). Shannon Sharpe should be the next wannabe announcer to be let go. I got to agree with many of you, what a Brett Favre media circus before, during and especialy after the game.

Shouldnt the real question be: "Why on doesnt Yahoo! go thru a thorough back-ground check before hiring their sports writers?... You would think they'd go with some with experience & knowledge of sports"

Hi, I think that ESPN should try to get Dan Fouts for Monday nite. Dan is great. Not a Charger fan just like the way Dan calls a game.

I'm liking Gruden so much in the booth that I hope he does NOT get another coachign job. Not sure what games this guy is watching but I think he's been great and he's excited about the sport and the players. Kornheiser made my skin crawl. I would turn of the audio. Glad he is off the broadcast.

Gruden is very knowledgeable, and he hasn't pissed me off yet. Most announcers take away and distract from the game which pisses me off. Writing this comment and defending Gruden is starting to piss me off though... I had to log-in to write this!!

Chris Chase is high. I was not a huge Gruden fan when he was a coach, but i thought he did a great job Monday night. Kornheiser was an absolute arrogant moron.

I cannot believe someone pays you to write. Obviously you have a problem with not only Gruden but also with Jared Allen. I am actually dumber for having read you articles and wasted time posting this. Get a life. Then don't write about it.

Before you start saying things like"Gruden rarely says anything that good NFL fans haven't already noticed themselves" think about this... in the last 10 years I've been forced to listen to John Madden (and yes, he was great waaaaayyy back when Montana and Elway were going at it and Farve was just a pup and not 40) the single most insightful thing I've heard him say during a broadcast is "When the running back crosses this line with the ball, boom, it's a touchdown".... Gee thanks John... I wouldn't have gotten that with the teleprompter aid. Seriously Mr. Chase, was there nothing else for you to write about this week or do you think you could do a better job?

Gruden is awesome, don't ever put tony on again! I'm so sick of media praising john madden and Chris Collingsworth for dumbing it down for the "average fan" that's bull, the average fan knows exactly what Gruden is saying. just because your to stupid to understand him doesn't mean we are!

Hey Chris you probably liked Denis Miller too. It's you and all the other pansy non-footballs minds that ABC/ESPN were trying to cater to and they've hit a home run with Gruden. I love his insight and scouting. I would rather hear my info from a football mind than some entertainer any day (See Byrant Gumble).

I like Gruden and think he is doing a great job. All Kornheiser did was talk about his fantasy team and Brett Farve. At least when Gruden brings up Farve he has unique experiences to share.

I completely disagree with Chase on this one. Gruden has done a good job. Excellent if you consider that it is his first commentating gig.
Was glad when Kornheiser was replaced, but it really should have been Jaworski. Kornheiser was only slightly annoying, but it was somewhat acceptable as he was not considered "The Expert" in the booth. He was kind of like Dennis Miller, there for some comic relief.
Jaworski on the other hand is just plain annoying. Pointing out the obvious every chance he gets, adding zero value to the conversation. They should have pulled Jaworski and left Kornheiser. Or better yet, pulled them both. Why is it MNF needs 3 commentators in the booth when every other NFL game called has only 2 in the booth?

Chris, Grow up. Football night is for football fans. We get smarter because of Jon Gruden, not in spite of him. Midwestern, southern, who cares what he sounds like?!? He's smart, articulate, and NOT condescending to the average fan. I hope he lands somewhere where we can hear him daily. Maybe there's a Friends rerun playing on another network you'd rather watch.
