Shutdown Corner - NFL

This is what happens when one particular official puts himself in the spotlight with an attention-grabbing bad call. Things snowball. Perception becomes reality. People start to see things that aren't there. Joey Porter's imagination becomes vividly overactive.

Porter, practically begging to be fined, aired a few thoughts about a (correct) call Ed Hochuli made in the Texans game-winning drive against the Dolphins yesterday. With 1:09 to play, Matt Schaub dropped back, Joey Porter beat his man (rather severely, in fact) and got to the quarterback. He made contact with Schaub and the ball came out.

It was ruled an incomplete pass, and though it wasn't reviewed by the booth, TV replays showed pretty conclusively that Schaub's arm was moving forward with the football in it. That's what I see, anyway. Solomon Wilcots saw the same thing. So did the officials. I don't know what other explanation there could be for the fact that the football was actually propelled forward.

See it for yourself right here, at about the 0:35 mark. Then have a look at Joey's words, via the Miami Herald:

''I came up with a sack. They have second and 18. They get the first down. I come back again, a sack. I swear, I just know he fumbled the ball. I went and got it. Then, they take that away. We get an interception, they take that away [ed note: that's a seperate call about which Porter is also blatantly wrong, and can be seen in the same video clip linked above, immediately after the first play in question]. I'm like, `Man, it's crazy that the same referee staff from all of this other stuff that's been happening was out there.' ''

''I'm looking for an apology on like Tuesday or Wednesday, NFL Network. But it'll be too late by then. Game's over. I know for sure I had both of his arms and the ball came out.''

''You reviewed the interception, why wouldn't you review that play? That play was just as big. More so. The first time in the game, when I hit his arm, I knew he threw it. That one, he never got his arm up. They didn't replay it [on the Reliant Stadium replay screens] so I feel I got him.''

It's like trying to blame Wall Street investors for the fact that you got drunk on Saturday and spent $300 on an 8-inch tattoo of Gus Frerotte's face on your abs, and today, you have no money to put gas in your car. Sure, the Wall Street people have screwed up recently. That doesn't mean you get to blame them for everything.

You're not getting an apology, Joey. You're not getting any sympathy for trying to get in a cheap blast at Ed Hochuli and his crew. You get a loss, and that's all you get.

You both are morons !!!!!! Everyone is wrong except you. Dolphins lost because they went to prevent defense instead of attacking.

I will do the same thing all the broncos fans did to us bolts fans. You still had opportunities to stop them and you didn't. The call didn't lose you the game, your defense did.
P.S. Our bad call, Ed admitted it was a wrong call, Your's is a biased fan base that always feels a questionable call should go in your favor. Accept the loss, you have a decent team that didn't prepare well against a team you should have beaten. Wow, that sounds really familiar!

Nother losing streak for Joey. Shoulda took less dough to stay with the steelers. . . although this season Joey would be third string with out linebackers.

It seems to me that Joey is NOT WRONG! but yes that prevent Deffense stinks and they should do away with it until the score is 48 to 10 and is 1:00 minute left to play but lets not get on Joey because he played HARD the whole game and I believe he's right. Go Phins!!!

Ok...who let Dan Marino put a post on here ..What with the "loosers"...funny...I think all should at least learn proper grammar before cracking on anybody. Let's not forget how bad the Dolphins were last year. They ought to be happy to be in any game this year. In due time they should be decent at best.

All I want to say is, if you are going to write this kind of article with those kinds of comments, at least have the balls to put your name on it, not initials, MJD. Also, mbf57, I once got into an argument with a Bills fan who said "Don't you remember the Bills going to 4 straight superbowls?". I said, yes and you got nothing. Remember when the Dolphins went to 3 straight? They won 2 of them.

What bothered me was the two missed holding calls right before Houston last score. The rest of Joey's rants would be needless if the refs would have caught EITHER of these.

It wasn't bad luck, bad play, or bad karma- it was a BAD CALL; yeah, that's it!
Can I use that excuse on a cop if I get stopped for speeding, instead of admitting I was mashing down on the accelerator a wee bit too much?
Next time, Joey. move just a bit faster.

I'm a huge Fins fan, but I'll admit that call could have gone either way. The biggest issue was, on 4th and 2 at the end of the game, they had no one in the middle... I was watching the game with a few other folks, and we called it right away that Schaub should just run right up the gut with it since there was no one there.
I will say that it bothered me that the Texan's O-line was tackling rushers all day (watch the guys arm around Joey's throat on that play he was talking about)... which is expected since they have a Shanahan protoge as a coach, but I won't blame that for the loss. It was a number of factors including some great plays, some lucky plays, etc. by the Texans. They're a better team than people give them credit for.

Sheese. His arm was clearly moving forward. They shouldn't fine Porter, though. They should suspend him for one game. During that game, they should make him sit in a corner of the stadium with a dunce cap on, and black tape over his mouth, while staring at the wall for 3 straight hours.

Change what rule Nicoya? A fumble is a fumble. When a quarterback's arm is going forward and the ball releases forward, then it is a pass attempt. The fact that it didn't make it out of the backfield doesn't make it any less of an attempt. And anyone saying that the impact caused the ball to go forward is an idiot. There's no way any hit on a quarterback would cause the football to fly the opposite way hitting a lineman as quickly as that ball did. It is because his arm was moving forward and THROWING the football. And don't even get started on backing up that one-hop interception. It was obvious even before the replays that it one-hopped.
