Jeff Garcia threatens to quit football

And I don't think it's one of those empty threats, either. He wants a new deal, he wants it now, and he's not a happy camper.

From a Sirius radio show, via Adam Schefter, via Pro Football Talk:

"If it doesn’t work itself out, if a contract is not presented as far as a renewal to finish my career, then I will seriously think about what my alternate options may be," said Garcia. "And it may come to not playing football anymore."

Garcia, who has one year left on his contract at a base salary of $2 million, said he has been "taken advantage of" by the team.

"I feel like when you mistreat people there comes a time when it doesn’t matter how much you are paid, it’s going to lead to some drastic decisions," Garcia said.

Again, I think this gives Jeff Garcia a lot of real leverage. Essentially, what he's saying is this:

I can quit football. And you know what happens if I do? I don't have to sweat through two-a-days to play for a team that doesn't appreciate my contributions and probalby isn't going to the Super Bowl anyway. Instead, I can spend my days laying around the house with my extremely hot wife.

You fellas, on the other hand, will be looking at sixteen weeks of Luke McCown or Chris Simms under center. How's that sound for you guys? Does 4-12 sound like fun to you?

If not, you might want to think about paying me. If you can't come up with the money, though, that's fine ... I'll just send the wife out for a can of whipped cream and a six-pack of Gatorade, and I'll get on with my retirement.

If that's not leverage, I don't know what is.

digg delicious

Let me see: should I go to the smelly locker room or lay around the house with my smokin' hot wife? I think I'll just lay here a little longer, maybe until I die.
That was a no brainer. If she leaves, find a new "she" because when you're an ex-baller "shes" are a dime a dozen.

i was a season ticket holder for 12 years, and cancelled this offseason when they jacked my seats from 78 to 99 dollars per seat. the st. pete times had an article showing the major losses the glazers' had this year (100's of millions)including manchester united. i think Glazers' are tight on money and will not offer the much deserved garcia a new contract. no other qb on this team could pick up gruden's LSAT of a playbook. the bucs benched garcia going into the playoffs to avoid paying him a game performance incentive clause. they should have given garcia the incentive money in good faith because of his ability to dress for the games. i believe the glazers don't care about the fans( major ticket increase & being held hostage with uncertain perpetual seat deposit debacle) and fortunately the rays are playing well this year. i can buy a lot of rays tickets with the $2000 i am saving this year. p.s. gruden has little man syndrome and the fany miss dungy!

I hate all players that do this. He signed a contract and agreed to a deal - now honor it. If he had a crappy year and the Bucs were to say, you need to renegotiate and we'll give you less, he wouldn't take that. He'd want the original deal honored. Yes, I know they could cut him, but he shouldn't have signed the original contract and agreed to 2 million (2 million, lol) for this next year if he thought he should get more. "I'm not getting paid what I'm worth"? What the heck is that? How about hearing someone say "Yes, I got paid too much this year and played poorly so I will take less now." I wish owners and teams would take this hard stance on renegotiating contracts downwards for players.

16, I would agree with you if it was that simple. Unfortunately Garcia has a point about the amount of respect and the cheapness of the team. He would have been paid and extra 1mil had he played in 70 % of the offensives snaps in 2007. He was injured and missed 3 games but was able to play in game 15 vs. ATL then was pulled in game 16 (SF) and sat in game 17 (CAR) while the Bucs were still fighting for a playoff spot. Basically they screwed him out of that bonus money by I think about 40 snaps if I remember correctly. I say turn around is fair play in this instance.

I hope he retires so the Bucs go 6-10 or worse. Then they can focus on getting a good QB in the draft next year.

Oh my, Oh my.... the bucs are plain stupid. Contract is contract and should be honored, but First they screw the man out of his 1mil bonus, that means the bucs did not hold their end of a contract and without Jeff they would have been finished far worse. So pay the man, he deserves it

Contracts in the NFL are ridiculous. You play poorly and they demand a paycut, you play well and the player demands a new contract. Think we could come up with a better system?

I see Simms, McCown and Greise as the teams QB's this season. All three are capable of moving the team and producing wins. Garcia's only advantage is about a century of game experience. You can't get that without playing time and any of the three (particularly Greise) have enough to help the team excel. If Garcia's threat is to retire to bed with his wife then let him. She'll be around until the paychecks stop, then he can amuse himself with the empty can of whip cream.

To all of you who can't deal with a pro athlete looking for a raise based on performance in a non-guaranteed contract nfl, hopefully next time you ask for a raise based on your good performance you get shot down. $2 million IS underpaid (meaning below market value) for a QB with Garcia's stats. I guess you'd prefer that slimy, faceless nfl executives and owners get that money, not the players who actually provide the entertainment.
If you make $20/ hr but your job performance dictates you should be making $30, you'd bring that up to management. Everything is relative.
I can't believe how pro-owners a lot of nfl fans are. What have they ever done for you besides move your beloved teams, arrest your tax dollars and run some of the best players out of the game? With the money these ceo-types make, players should get an even bigger piece of the revenue AND guaranteed contracts, and owners should have to pony up their OWN $$ for stadiums. Here's to the end of the salary cap...

consiquently its a screw them before they screw me situation. and it goes both ways. thats all its about. the player wants more money, the owner wants to save money... i say the contracts should be pay for play. if you play good you get paid more. if your garbage you should get less. i.e. rookie's should get a base salary say 750,000 with incentives to make more. your next years salary is based on your performance from the previous year, or on a weekly basis. so the players have to earn their money, and not just show up and go through the motions. that would make the players more likely to play to their potential. like college players they are playing for the future paycheck not the one they already have.
