Jeff Fisher delivered an appropriate apology today for donning a Peyton Manning jersey at a charity benefit where he explained his choice of apparel by saying he "wanted to feel like a winner". The action drew outrage from humorless people who can't take a joke and those who think that being a football coach is as serious a profession as there is. From a PR standpoint, the apology was expected. It wasn't at all needed.

The whole thing was a self-deprecating joke. I guarantee Jeff Fisher is more disgusted with his team's 0-6 start than any fan out there, so to suggest that he doesn't care about his team's shoddy record because he's able to poke fun at it is preposterous.

To his credit, Fisher stood by the gag joke (which was pretty funny, I thought) while trying to calm the masses who called for his head:

"It was for a very, very worthwhile cause, charity," Fisher said. "I was introducing Tony, just having fun with it and I really apologize if I offended anybody, but if you're offended over the nature of that type of thing, then I think you need to rethink things.

"This is a very worthwhile and needy benefit and I was honored to be there. ... I'm sorry if I offended anybody but if I had to do it again, I would do it again."

That's a classic non-apology apology right there. He says he's sorry and then chastises anyone stupid enough to have desired such a statement in the first place. That's fantastic.

Some blogs failed to mention that Fisher was introducing Tony Dungy while he wore the jersey, a fact which makes this even less of a big deal. People can't poke fun at themselves now?

One blogger said this would be like if Jim Zorn wore an Eli Manning jersey to a benefit in D.C., which isn't the best comparison. Fisher has earned the right to laugh at himself, Zorn hasn't. If people in Tennessee disagree, maybe they'd like to replace their successful coach with the decidedly unsuccessful Zorn. He should be on the market in a few days.

Hey, he can come to Buffalo, I think he would be a great coach here, and we need a new one.

Look, I have been a fan of the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans since 1993 and I can tell you I laughed when i heard about him doing this. Ya, it sucks that we are 0 - 6, but you can tell he has lost his spirit yet and i think it was respect as well to his old time rival Tony Dungy, the guy he was introducing. So let him have his fun and let people be human.

It's also important to remember that there's a ton of Peyton Manning fans in Nashville. This isn't just some quarterback of a divisional rival. I think it's important that to note there's a lot of local good will towards the player. If he'd worn a Ray Lewis jersey, that'd be a story.

It's sad when people can't take a joke. I applaud Fisher for having a sense of humor, and, though they usually bug me, issuing a non-apology.

I wouldnt let him off so easy. I dont think it would have been such a big deal if the titans werent so bad. I do think Fisher is a good Guy. Actually, I know he is a good guy, this is a guy who does alot for the community. Im no titans fan, But if Todd Haley did the same thing with a Denever Jersey, I would puke. I think anyone can judge these fans for being upset and say that its stupid, but if your team is horrible and hasnt even won a game or has only won a game, Then its not cool. I think Jeff Fisher should have apologized strictly to the fans that pay his salary. his is a division rival people. Think if Dick Jauron put on a Patriots hoodie with the sleeves cut off and said that. Or wade Phillips wearing a Donovan Jersey. Come on people, dont be so quick to judge. I think Fisher was being harmless, but it is blatent disrespect to the fans of the titans.

I thought it was pretty funny, and I'm a Titans fan. I think a lot of the fans are getting bent out of shape merely because his team sucks and some of it is Fisher's fault. He IS a great guy and probably still a good coach. I just get the feeling that the team has given up on him and vice versa. I hope that he does move to a team with some talent in place so that he can win a Superbowl someday. If not, I hope he can go to a team as an offensive coordinator as there are a bunch of teams whose coaches couldn't call plays to save their own lives.

I am a Diehard Titans Fan ,yes its right we havnt won a game yet , its not fishers fault we had the same coach last year and we went 13-3 and when I saw him wearing a Manning jersey I thought it was funny , he is friends with Tony Dungy and I really think he was just doing it of respect to him , and also it was a benifit to raise money , which they raised almost a million dollars!!!!!! So all you HATERS get off of Jeff Fisher GO TITANS I BELIEVE WE CAN WIN

I am a Titans fan and I have no problem with this. Peyton Manning is still very beloved here in Tennessee and I still consider myself a huge Peyton Manning fan even though he plays for our division rival. No offense taken by this Titans fan. Since the Titans aren't going to the Super Bowl this year, I'd love for Peyton to get his second ring and solidify his status as the best quarterback of his generation.

He was introducing Peyton Manning's former coach at a charity event. If it were say a Cutler jersey for Mike Shanahan it probably would have went unnoticed. But I think because of the timing (0-6, just lost 59-0) it was a little tacky.

Maybe it will spark the team? Ha, probably not.
Jeff is very likeable, even when he has an 0-6 club he is talked about with the highest respect. Some say he would probably be everyone's first choice if he were to leave Tennessee.
I don't know why, but I like him too. Hope he turns them around. He might as well put Vince in now...even though he doesn't really want to.
