Shutdown Corner - NFL

The NFL is pinking up this weekend, as about 100 players throughout the league will sport pink cleats, like the ones pictured above (via Brian McCarthy's @nflprguy Twitter feed).

The onslaught of pink, of course, is to raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer. Players will also be clad in pink wristbands, gloves and towels throughout the league. Coaches will have pink shirts. Much of it will be auctioned off after the games (and there are a few things available right now), with proceeds going to breast cancer research.

I love the pink. Not just for what it stands for, but aesthetically. I think it'll look cool, but as we've already learned this week, I'm way more fashion-forward than most of you. I don't expect you to agree. My only regret is that the NFL missed, by a week, matching up the pink cleats and accessories with the Seahawks lime-green joints. That would've been major pizzazz.

I'd like to see one team take this thing to the next level and go with pink uniforms. Rock helmets like this, and jerseys like this (except, perhaps, without the womanly cut) and let's really make a statement. Let's get cracking on that for 2010.

Why don't they do this for prostrate cancer? It kills a higher percentage of men than breast cancer kills women. They should do both.

NFL players will soon become walking billboards. I can see it coming. I miss Pete Rozelle RIP, you were the best commish. This new fool wants to wear out the term NFL as fast as he can. Less is more!

Umm, #2, look up the word 'prostrate' in the dictionary, and you'll see why I'm laughing so hard right now.

To #4, funny you should ask... Ocho was on ESPN's PTI today, and the crew there asked him that very question. He said he was definitely going to get fined for his attire but promised to donate money equal to the amount of the fine to a breast cancer charity.

Haha, bad typo. I meant prostate gland and not what you do when you bow. And yes I do know what it means to prostrate yourself. Funny typo!

I agree with annoyed who posted the comment about NFL players soon becoming walking billboards. They're just walking advertisement so u can say they are more or less a commercial.

Good maybe it will cut down on commercial breaks. As for Ocho i'll say he at least wears a pink chin strap and maybe socks? Not counting the wrist bands and shoes of course.

Good for them and everything, but I'm wondering if America could be any MORE aware of breast cancer. Doesn't some group or organization do this every week?

TrueDat, No. 18. Breast cancer is the cause of death for 10% of women, way way way way behind heart disease. But most Americans prefer the pills and treatment approach to health care, so they don't want awareness of heart disease, which would require diet and exercise.
Besides, the increase in cancer diagnoses in the last century is due to our increased life expectancy. Live long enough, and cancer will get most people.

Just wait, MJD--it's only a matter of time before Goodell has everyone in the league wearing pink, and not for breast cancer awareness.

As a Browns fan and since we are the only team to wear Orange (and Brown) in our jerseys, I wondered if there would be a team daring enough to wear pink. Use the Atlanta Falcon color scheme and swap red with pink.
