Shutdown Corner - NFL

There’s nothing close to a guarantee that says Michael Vick will be plying his trade in the National Football League in 2009; in fact, if you judge by Roger Goodell’s suspension-happy past, it’s more likely that Vick won’t be in the big leagues this season.

That would leave Vick looking at the upstart UFL and presumably their maximum salary of $620,000. That’s the figure at the high end of the new league’s salary scale, with $35,000 being what most of the anonymous UFL’ers will make.

There are pros and cons to the UFL path for Vick. On the pro side, he would be playing football again and he’d have an opportunity to knock some rust off and show that the skills are still there.

On the con side, if he plays for the relatively light UFL paycheck, he risks major long-term injury, in which case he’d never get back into the big leagues, where the real money is to be made. One could even argue that Vick would be better off just sitting out a year entirely, as opposed to taking the risk of playing a year in the UFL.

Given his debt situation, though, it’s hard to imagine a court saying to Vick, “Yes, feel free to just ignore that potential $620,000 salary.”

From a fan perspective, the UFL is probably the best thing. It would be exciting to see Vick on Sundays, but we probably wouldn’t see him as a full-time quarterback. Realistically, he’s probably looking at seeing action in just a few plays a game and spending most of his time riding pine.

In the UFL, though, he’d be the star attraction. Vick would almost certainly be running someone’s team, he’d be out there for every offensive play, we’d see the full range of his skills as a quarterback and he’d provide a reason to watch the new league.

From Vick’s perspective, though, it might not be the best idea. With each day that passes, though, it seems like it gets closer and closer to being his reality.

Gracias, Pro Football Talk.

If he can't get a job in the NFL - due to suspension or disinterest - I think he should go to the UFL. Rather, I hope he wants to play in the UFL and goes there, because it would show some amount of realistic perception on his part, that he knows he must show that he has something to offer. If sits out the entire year, I'd worry about his desire to play football (versus just get paid) and his sense of entitlement.

If this douche turns down $620,000 a year to play a kids game when the rest of the country is receiving unemployment or nothing at all, it will go to show what a self-centered lowlife this guy really is.

I agree. If he won't take 620K, who's going to feel sorry for him?

Even if we leave Goodell out of it, I'm not sure that Vick would make much more than $620,000 in the NFL this year. Given his rustiness and the negative publicity that will follow him, I don't see any NFL team giving him more than the veteran minimum. And, again, that is in the best case NFL scenario.

Wow MJD, you take a week off and come back with a half way decent article. Imagine how great you'd be if you took a year off! Heck, you might be an amazing writer if you took a lifetime off.

According to the last interview with Dennis Green the UFL isn't looking to sign anyone on suspension with the NFL. According to Green the UFL doesn't want to be plan b for the NFL's troublemakers so they can stay "fresh" and return after their suspensions. They also don't want to be a league of outlaws. So if this holds true don't expect to see Vick, Jones, Plax or Stallworth anytime soon in the UFL either.

i think vick would rather win back respect than have money. he wouldn't want to be (and shouldn't be) the face of this new upstart league. he should go play in the cfl for a year, a league designed to show off his mobile skills, and then make his way back to the nfl.
if i were his agent, that's the route i'd recommend. it worked for ricky williams (who played for the toronto argos in 2006), it could work for vick too.

In fairness, Commish Goodell should make up his mind so Vick can plan his post-incarceration career. My vote is an additional two-year suspension from the NFL to match his time in the pen, and a return conditioned on a pledge to repay 100% of the pension funds he misappropriated out of his salary in excess of $250K and whatever he has to pay pursuant to his bankruptcy.

I agree with #7 to a degree... There is nothing remotely justifiable with people who go to dear leases (read fenced-in farmland), set up a feeder, wait for a buck to show up and then kill him for a nice little head mount.
How is that much different than lining up two animals to fight eachother? Both are killing animals for "sport"
Now, if you're one of the people who actually eat the meat, which is becoming more and more rare, then I don't see a problem with that.
I will never understand bull-riding though, thats just another form of animal cruelty.

whats the difference between dog fighting and deer leases? Both trap animals for pure human entertainment...hell, a lot of hunters don't even eat venison...
Why isn't that made such a big deal out of? Also, why is bull-riding considered a-ok by people?
I don't think any are justifiable unless you eat venison, then you're hunting for food. The rest are just as bad as Vick.

Let the man play football!! Everyone deserves a second chance, and he has paid his debt to society! It was dogs! How many of you people have dead birds in the grilles of your vehicles? How many of you have ran over squirrels or raccoons in the street? Hell, how many of you havbe ran over dogs in the street? None of you get locked up for these acts, yet you want Vick to fry over some dogs, not another human being, but DOGS!!! This wasn't Benji, Lassie, or Rin Tin Tin. These was ordinary everyday dogs!!! You people are just mad that this man has an opportunity to make millions if given another chance in the NFL, while you're probably on your third or fourth time to make 8 dollars an hour!!!

To the morons comparing what Ron Mexico did to hunters, or somebody who has accidentally ran over and killed another animal: The difference is that Ron Mexico tortured those dogs. Hunters don't electrocute or drown their kills. Somebody who has ran a dog over by accident doesn't then pick up the dog and repeatedly slam it's body to the ground to kill it. Have any of you idiots ever read any of the facts of this case? Of course you haven't. This to you is just another case of the black man being wrongfully jailed by the white man. Try finding out at least one fact before saying something so obviously stupid next time. What Ron Mexico did is exactly what a serial killer does before he tries the same thing on a human being. Ron Mexico is sick, has always been sick, and will always be sick. He does not need money, fame, etc. He had all that and threw it away. No second chance should be available to him, ever.

What Vick did was wrong, nobody can argue that. HE PAID HIS DEBT TO SOCIETY. Look at Stallworth, he killed a human and does 30 days? That's messed up. He killed dogs that were bread to fight. How many dogs get put down in shelters a day???? Good dogs, not dogs wired to kill? It disgusting how people are acting towards him. I don't like him, but come on this is ridiculous. I hope the haters have never gotten a DUI, and have rescued every dog they can find in shelter, if not, you're just as bad, if not worse. Think about it.

Michael Vick is a monster. He killed dogs that could no longer fight for his pleasure by hanging,by drowning them,by electric shock.Would you take your little boy or girl to a Pro game to see this man play? He should be cleaning toliets at a homeless shelter. And in the end no oe knows how many dogs he and his friends killed. They are buried all over his property.Vick is a very sick twisted man.
