Shutdown Corner - NFL

It was my understanding that Kerry Collins was now the Tennessee Titans starter, come hell, high water, or Merrill Hoge getting "I ♥ Vince Young" tattooed on his forearm.

But if that was the case, I don't know why Vince Young would've been taking reps with the first team at Titans practice yesterday. I guess it's possible that Jeff Fisher, who's been super-protective of Vince Young throughout this whole deal, was throwing Young a bone by letting him practice with the big kids. Kind of like at Thanksgiving, when you let a whiny kid sit at the grown-ups table, so he can feel special.

Fisher says that the starting job belongs to Collins as long as the Titans keep winning, which is the right move, of course, But to me, it's a bit too vague and leaves too much wiggle room. Any wiggle room at all is too much, in my opinion.

Commit 100% to Collins. Say it's his job. Say it's his team. Not only is it the truth, because the team responds to Collins, and he clearly gives the Titans a better chance to win, but you've got to let Vince Young know that it's time to earn some things.

If he wants to be a starting quarterback for the Titans, it's no longer good enough to have been good in college, been a high draft pick, be making a lot of money. He also should have to be better than Kerry Collins. And he's got a lot of work to do to that end.

Also of note on Young and Collins:

• Collins made it known yesterday that he doesn't want to be a backup next year. So if there's not a Titans quarterback controversy at any point this year, there will be in the offseason.

• Peter King had this tidbit in his MMQB column this week:

I think I'm hearing that Vince Young is rebuffing Kerry Collins' attempts to be a mentor. What a waste. Collins has seen too much, and he's a selfless person at this stage of his career. Whoever's advising Young should tell him Collins would be a smart addition to his inner circle.

Couldn't agree more.

The media is making this a QB controversy...Fisher stated that Collins is the guy. Why shouldn't he be? He manages the offense efficiently and he's been productive. VY sure wasn't.

If memory serves me correctly, wasn't Kerry Collins the guy who took a year off early in his career because he couldn't handle the pressure of being the starting quarterback? If anything, he would be a good guy to help Vince Young get past this.

the problem is that fisher said that collins is the quarterback as long as the titans are winning. does that mean one loss will give the starting position back to vince young? that is too vague. the titans are looking extremely good right now, but to believe that they will go undefeated this year is a stretch. the titans will probably loose a game this year and when they do, there should not be a question about who will start in the next game. i agree with this journalist. this team needs stability and fisher needs to declare collins as the starter for the rest of the season come win or loss, hell or highwater.

vince was never given the chance to learn how to be a quarterback in the nfl. he was thrown into the starting position of a team that was struggling and expected to sink or swim. well he swam, but he did it by playing the position the same way he did in college. it was enough to keep the team afloat but not enought to take the team to the next level. now that this team has stability through a solid rushing attack and defense, vince needs to take the time to learn the pro-quarterback position.

kerry collins would be a great mentor for this. vince needs to understand that he is still young(get it) and that there is nothing wrong with taking two years off from being the starter. let collins take the helm for the rest of this year and next year. vince is extremely talented and could become a great quarterback. he just needs to be patient. aaron rodgers is the perfect example. he paid his dues and spent time as an understudy to another seasoned veteran. now rodgers looks like he has been playing for years dispite this being his first year as a starter.

You obviously don't have enough to write about without trying to create a controversy? Given the way QB''s have been hitting the ground and then the bench this year it only makes sense to be prepared. Then again, defensive schemes for Collins and Young are very different so why not put additional pressure on defenses by making them prepare for both? Controversial? Hardly.

Maybe it's not a controversy. Maybe Fisher is just a good coach and giving both reps in case Collins was to get hurt than VY is still prepared to play.

I say we give up our number 1 draft pick and number 3 next year and justin gage for Roy Williams. We are so close this year we just need a top flight receiver to open up the rest of the offense.

good point by wviii. vy shouldnt just sit on watch practice. qb backup plays a big factor these days. i see the controversy being in the offseason. should they re-sign kerry or give the steering wheel to vy in 2009. by then vy should be comfortable with the playbook.

Collins is winning. Until he begins to show he can't get it done, he is our QB. I am a big fan of Vince, but he has plenty of years ahead of him, but right here, right now the Titans have something potentially special going....don't screw it up now.

coach fisher should be more definitive in who the starter will be and stop leaving the door open for speculation from the media. kerry should be the starter for the rest of the season regardless of what happens unless he gets hurt. and DONT let vince pratice with the first team. the offense should be working on getting better with kerry, not make vince feel like he belongs. vince should be the #3 until he shows some mental toughness/stability because right now it seems like he's the second coming of kordell stewart.

its there defense that is leading them to there wins not collins. the titans did nothing but lose until vy started starting games for them. i know 9 tds and 17 ints so what, look at what he has to through to. they have the worst wrs in the entire league and they only have fisher to blame for that. they've been on top of the league for drops for the last two seasons and crumpler has shown nothing but being a big joke for this year. vy didn't start "having problems" until fisher decided he wasnt doing his job right. i have been a titans fan since before they even moved to tennessee but last time i checked 12 tds 13 ints 7rushing tds and 552 rushing yards wasn't a bad season for a rookie.let drew bennet bobby wade (there leading wrs) travis henry all go. what did they think was going to happen?

They do need receivers for real. They haven't really had a good receiving choir since they were the Houston Oilers with Earnest Givens and Haywood Jeffries. But they got a hell of a defense and can run. And that can take ya pretty far. Work in Scaife and Crumpler more thats the best receivers they got.

damn cambodia has some deeper problems than what this blog is about. what a tard. i think you are the one who needs the drugs my friend. anyway. i'm glad to see all of these non qb's getting phased out. its about time. until vince learns to be a qb, with that horrible sidearm throwing motion i think it is going to be a while, he will never be successful. i hope collins wins it all then they will finally be rid of the vy bs

Just like the coaches in Minnesota and Oakland Jeff Fisher didn't want the qb that the team drafted so they set the qb up to fail with these high school offenses. How come the Titans and the Viking's offenses are spread out with more receivers with Frerotte and Collins then when Jackson and Young was in as qb? Hmmmmm

Fisher didn't set him up to fail. With VY's room temperature IQ maybe he couldn't absorb anything more than a high school offense. Don't forget he scored 6 on the Wonderlic. And I heard an interview with VY a couple years ago where he said that nobody couldn't tell him what to do. You can see it now that he isn't coachable and never will be!

After the '06 draft, many football fans here in Houston were very upset because the Texans passed up on Vince Young. Two years later, we are still not a good team, but i believe we would have been in worst shape had we taken Young.
