Shutdown Corner - NFL

The word "Valuable" in the middle of MVP complicates things. It means that if you vote, you aren't voting for the best player in the league, necessarily, but the most valuable, which could be interpreted in about 17 million different ways.

What's value? Does that player's team have to be .500 or better? Do they have to be in the playoffs? Do they have to be considered a serious threat to win the Super Bowl?

These are legitimate questions. After all, how much value could you possibly have if your team isn't even playing for the ultimate prize? Can you be good? Sure. But where's your value? Your team can miss the playoffs just as easily without you, bub. All you did was worsen your team's draft pick.

You could even say that a guy like Ken Lucas is the season's MVP, for not going ballistic when teammate Steve Smith punched him out in training camp. Lucas could have chosen to divide the locker room, hate Smith, and submarine team chemistry. But he didn't. And here the Panthers are with a first-round bye.

The point is, you can go anywhere you want with the word "valuable." If you go the NCAA basketball route, though, and just change it to Most Outstanding Player, things get simpler. You just take the best player of the year, and you give him a trophy, and there's nothing wrong with that. That seems like an appropriate and uncomplicated thing to do.

So if the award was called the MOP, here's my list of nominees, in alphabetical order.

Drew Brees. Broke the 5,000 yards passing barrier.
James Harrison. All over the place. A smart, aggressive player who came up with a ton of big plays.
Andre Johnson. The game's best receiver. More receptions than Welker, more yards than Fitzgerald.
Adrian Peterson. Won the league's rushing title. Nine fumbles hurt, though.
Troy Polamalu. Routinely makes game-changing plays in the secondary.
Ed Reed. Does the same.
Philip Rivers. League's best QB rating. As many touchdowns as Brees, but with six fewer interceptions.
DeMarcus Ware. League's sack leader, and maybe the only thing keeping the Cowboys defense even moderately respectable.
DeAngelo Williams. A monstrous 5.5 yards-per-carry average, an amazing second half to the season, and 18 rushing TDs.

If it were my ballot, I'd narrow it to a top three of Andre Johnson, Philip Rivers and DeAngelo Williams. I won't name my winner, though ... I'll leave that up to you to debate in the comments. Keep that "O" in the middle of MOP in mind. Your "V" has nothing to do with it.

Philip Rivers led a team with an 8-8 record. No thanks.
Andre Johnson's situation is similar. Playing for the Texans will get you nowhere.
I'll have to go with DeAngelo Williams. He is outstanding, plays for a great team, and makes something happen everytime he touches the ball.

Q: What about Kurt Warner? Has everyone forgot what this Arizona team looked like with Leinart under the center?Warner finished second in Yards right behind Brees...and was minus Boldin for part of the Season. Sure Warner has some "Receiving Weapons", but AZ's running game was a joke this year. They rode the arm of Kurt Warner...i.e. why Coach Ken still has his job and not filing for "unemployment" today like others in the NFL! Without a running game, teams stayed in Nickel packages...with extra DBs against him AND HE STILL PICKED THEM APART! This guy is also one of the classiest palyers to grace a NFL game field. With all that has happened over this year with misconduct among players, look at the players named above...you could take Rivers out just because he has a poor attitude (he should not be a role model for young athletes...taunting & trash talking...just play the game). Yes, D. Williams looked good this year in his first year as a starter, but Stewart produced with his share of the carries also, so that limits the belief that it was him as a player and not the system. Andre Johnson is clearly one of TODAYs best young receivers. His team is not too good though...YET. Now if he puts up those kind of numbers and Houston becomes a legit Playoff Team..give him the trophy then. As far as today goes though...Kurt Warner is "THE REASON" Arizona is in & hosting a Playoff game this year.

Ridiculous you didnt even mention the winner in my eyes Peyton Manning, lol, nor did you mention Turner from the Falcons, WAKE UP! Oh and by the way add 4 more turnovers by Rivers for the lost fumbles, and he peorribrformed hly against teams they should have beat.

So 15 turnovers from Rivers makes his season horrible? Considering Manning only had 2 less turnovers and threw 7 less TDs AND had a much worse QB rating, I'm gonna go with Rivers would still be the better candidate of the 2.

I'd like to vote myself in I felt that my constant yelling at the TV and throwing small objects across my living room had an overall factor on how the panthers played and that if there were an MOP it would go to Deangelo Williams for being the man beast that he is on the ground......it could go to anybody, so many players were influential to the overall outcome of their teams. Thats why they are called superstars......

I like your work MJD but the best receiver in the game is named Hines Ward and is not even close.

Calvin Johnson is the best receiver in the game. There could be a chinchilla out there on Sundays chucking passes in a Detroit uniform and he'd still rack up 100 and a score somehow.
That being said, I personally would give MOP to Polamalu, with PManning a close 2nd.

    Adrian Peterson. Without a doubt.
He gets a couple of blocks up front, but it's AP vs 6+ defenders every freaking play.. and everyone knows it... and he STILL wins the rushing title. No backup, no 'rotation', no passing offense.
    All Day, MOP.
P.S. Fumbles happen. Particularly in 1 on 6 football games.

OK, Most Outstanding player. Too many to mention.
If i have to pick one, I would have to pick two...
Ed Reed, & Troy Palamalu. These guy's play to win every minute, of every game !
In this league at this time, there are few that play with that energy, every play.
Other than that, I pick Terrell Owens for tearing apart the Cowgirls,
That was OUTSTANDING for me !

I'm a huge Panthers fan and have seen every game this year. Deangelo WIlliams is great, but watching this entire season it never seemed to me like I was watching the best player in the NFL. .Most OUTSTANDING Player of the year? Drew Brees, hands down.

Louren, you and the rest of the fanboys need to keep out of the discussion. If you can't look at it objectively, stay home. Ward is good, but isn't in the top 5 receivers, much less top 5 outstanding players.
My MOP vote goes Palamalu or Williams. They've been outstanding all year.

I agree with # 4 and I think A. Johnson 80 was [profane]in outstanding this season, although Calvin Johnson is pretty outstanding as well for being able to catch a ball in detriot!

Philip Rivers gets my vote. He broke Dan Fouts season TD record last week while the San Diego ground game broke the franchise rushing yards during the same game. The Chargers scored 149 points in the last 4 games. Rivers knows how to call the plays. Even Darrin Sproles had a 5.4 yard average per carry going into the last game before being named that weeks MVP. The Rivers doubters will be eating crow soon enough.

for mvp its got to be james harrison or peyton manning they meant the most to there teams. The running backs mentioned above did good but i believe someone else could replace them in there system and do just as well, peterson best o-line in football and still only like 4.8 a carry tuner 4.4 a carry williams did have 5.5 a carry but i cant say he was the reason they had 12 wins they could have won as many without him. those first two guys made a difference.

I would vote for the Giants offensive line...without them they would not be a number 1 seed and probably wouldnt be in the playoff picture....they have been outstanding and dominate all year long. They laided the way for only the 4th set of 1000 yard rushers in a single season.

    How bout Chad Pennington?
    * lowest turnovers by a QB ever.
    * 2nd Highest passing yards on Dolphin franchise (Dan Marino played there ya know)
    * got to hand back his pink slip personally to the team and coach that fired him.

OPB, #24 - I'd agree, but being 2nd to Dan Marino... until you give me the guy in third, all I can assume is that the Fins haven't had a decent QB other than Dan the Man.
