Shutdown Corner - NFL

Greg White doesn't have the high profile of Bengals receiver Chad Ocho Cinco, formerly known as Chad Johnson. But I do think he's pulled off the best name change of this NFL season.

Buccaneers opponents will no longer be blocking Greg White. They will be blocking Stylez G. White. He made it official in court today.

And for what reason? Because he liked the character Stiles from "Teen Wolf". From The Bucs Report:

White said he picked his new name from a character in the 1985 movie “Teen Wolf,’’ starring Michael J. Fox.

“That was his best friend’s name,’’ White said. “I always liked that name. It’s not that I don’t like Greg White.’’

In the movie, Fox’s friend is named Rupert “Stiles’’ Stilinski. White changed the spelling and adopted the name as his own.

That's fantastic. Normally I'd question the self-esteem of a guy who changes his name to that of a sidekick in a movie, but I'll make an exception if it's Stiles. He's an '80s icon. Not as much as the Teen Wolf himself, but you can't really name yourself Teen Wolf, can you?

If he could find a way to be introduced at home games, and ride into the stadium on top of a van, he would be my hero.

Gracias, Deadspin.

    @ Matthew:
I'm black, most of my friends are black, and I've gone to mostly black schools during my life. No one---and I repeat NO ONE---that I've come into contact with has a name as asinine as "Stylez," and I'm from Baltimore (home of ignorance, drugs, and all that crap). So, to stereotype and assume that even "many" Blacks enjoy making jacka$$es out of themselves is just as ignorant, my friend. But, yeah, dude's friggin' stupid to do this; at least when Chode Johnson did it, he was still somewhat performing as he should've been (afterwards, is a different story LOL).

He must have been too busy filling out the paperwork to be bothered with, I don't know, DOING HIS JOB the last two weeks. How many yards rushing was that they allowed to the Panthers and Falcons, something like 450?

Hey Matthew R. I got news for you: Everybody who's ever had a name in the world is made up. Your parents made up your first name. Your ancestors created or were given their surnames. A lot of Hollywood Stars made up their names. The most famous drummer in the world, Richard Starkey, renamed himself Ringo Starr. So you should shut up...

what the hell is wrong with these guys? were they dropped on their heads as infants. this and the whole ocho cinco thing are the most rediculous things i've ever heard. there are a lot of movies that i really like, and characters too, but i'm not going to go change my name to optimus prime, shrek, or austin powers. come on now, if this isn't a cry for attention, i don't know what is

Who cares what people change their name too. People do it all the time the only reason this gets so much press is because he is in the NFL. It doesn't matter whether your black or white, if you want to change your name that is your own issue.
