Shutdown Corner - NFL

Priest Holmes(notes) is currently the all-time leading rusher for the Kansas City Chiefs, but Larry Johnson(notes) -- recently suspended for "conduct detrimental to the team", i.e. using a nasty gay slur twice in a 24-hour period -- is closing in on that record. If he gets 30 or so more carries, he should get it.

A lot of Chiefs fans don't want that to happen. They love their Chiefs, they respect the franchise's history, and they don't want Johnson's name associated with it. It's not just because of the recent suspension, either. If you're looking for them, you'll find no shortage of reasons to dislike Larry Johnson.

So fans are taking matters into their own hands and circulating a petition asking the Chiefs to deactivate Johnson before he can claim the record. The petition reads, in part:

We are asking you, as fans of this team, this organization, and of the pride that this city has in the Chiefs, please deactivate Larry Johnson. Please do not let his name sit atop the all-time rushing leaders in Kansas City Chiefs history. He needs a mere 80 yards to surpass Priest. He doesn’t deserve that opportunity. He has never represented anything close to the values that we have for our Chiefs and it would be another dagger to the fans that continue to support this proud franchise.

If you'd like to add your name to the almost 10,000 that have already signed it, you can do so here.

It's a nice notion, trying to protect the record book from someone who isn't believed to have the character of others in there before him. It's easy to see where petitioners are coming from, and their devotion to a proud Chiefs history is commendable.

If it were my team, though, and some disreputable character was about to put his name in my team's record book ... I don't think I'd sign a similar petition. At the end of the day, what's most important to me is that the team is doing its best to win football games.

I believe there's one thing that should always be true about an organization. As Herm Edwards (sorry, Chiefs fans) once said, You Play To Win The Game. The fans who play to watch their team deserve the best effort to win. The rest of the guys on the team deserve the best effort to win. If that happens to come in the form of a not-so-nice guy running the football, then so be it.

I like the Dalai Lama. I don't like Larry Johnson. I'd rather have Larry Johnson running the football for me.

The nice thing about this particular case, though, is that Johnson is neither a nice guy or a productive running back, so his benching would seem to suit everyone. He's currently picking up 2.7 yards per carry and has no touchdowns. Backup Jamaal Charles(notes), meanwhile, has averaged a 5.0-yard gain on his 23 carries this year. So whether you see it my way, or the way of the petition signers, benching Larry Johnson seems to be the right thing to do.

Quote: "It is believed that Johnson attempted to flee from police officers but was tackled after two yards..."
Sounds like his craptacular average yards per game extends further than just his games.

The Dalai Lama has the same amount of rushing TD's as LJ does this year. So i wouldnt be so quick to choose one over the other.

Larry Johnson was supposed to have a press conference addressing this issue, but when he found out the walls of the press room were 3 yards away from the microphone, instinct kicked in and he fell flat on his face.

LOL @ number 2. That was a good one. As a lifelong, die hard chief's fan, I don't really care if he never plays for us again. I don't care about the record or his average. I just want him gone. And then I'd like to see them win some games. Before I die preferably. I don't think I'm asking too much.

This is silly. Play Johnson because he's the best back. If/when he breaks the record, so be it. It would be an insult to the great Priest Holmes to preserve his record artificially. Give Johnson the football and let the chips fall.
By the way----does anyone really consider Barry Bonds the Home Run King of baseball? I don't. Having the record is all well and good, but a jerk is a jerk. For me, Hammerin' Hank Aaron was a great man who honored Babe Ruth by shattering the Babe's record. I wish Hank still had the HR title at 755, but he doesn't. But to me, all Bonds has is a number. With Larry Johnson, if you're a Chiefs fan who thinks he's a jackass, all he'll have is a number, but "The Priest" will still have our hearts.

This explains why you,MJD, still have a job. It is obvious to everyone that you haven't a clue about being a journalist but you retain your job because people read and respond to your asinine dribble (like now, for instance) because you have a platform from which you can spew your stupidity.

If the journalist had actually read the petition, the document spends much more time explaining the FOOTBALL reasons not to start LJ, rather than the personal/character issues.
So I'm confused how this article adds anything to the argument. It should have simply reported on the petition rather than trying to make a point.

@AngeloM - but he isn't the best back! He has been absolutely awful the last couple of years. He had two really good years behind one of the best lines in football and hasn't done squat outside of that. 2.7 yards per carry!! Seriously! This is after he was suspended 4 games last year and was out to "prove himself" this year.

MJD. Your thinking is what gets teams in trouble. Remember the "love boat" of the VIkings a few years back.. Remember the Portland "JailBlazers". (there are many more examples available). When the GM/Owner/Braintrust, whatever you wanna call it, dont put PERSONAL CONDUCT and CHARACTER above talent, or at least on par with it, you get situations like this. You get situations where the fans are up in arms. That sours fans on the team, the braintrust, and all. If it persists, they will find reasons not to go.

I don't mean to point fingers at the long-departed Carl Peterson, BUT, he's the one who handed this this young man a bunch of money. When you write that check, you had better be sure that the character of that person will lead them to not only perform on the field, but just as importantly to represent your organization off of the field. There were serious character concerns with LJ prior to his receiving his last contract, and keep in mind that Jared Allen was not re-signed because of his questionable character. Go figure...

this is super stupid. Neither guy was that good. Priest Holmes couldn't get off the bench. Let me try this again; Willie roaf is probably the greatest left tackle of all time. Will Sheilds was on the other and was really good, too. Neither Holmes or Johnson has done anything without Willie Roaf. Chief fans celebrate Willie Roaf and don't hate LJ.

I'd start Adolph Hitler and Tom Metzger on my team if the they could rush for over 4 yard per carry. Why? Because it's about winning games!
The fact that Kansas City will NEVER HAVE a winning season during LJ's carrier is irrelevant! IT'S ABOUT WINNING AS MANNY MEANINGLESS GAMES AS POSSIBLE! Stop hatin' on LJ!!!!! Stop hatin' on LJ Wigga!
    Stop hatin, F*G!!!!!
