Shutdown Corner - NFL

Danks mentioned on the podcast this morning that the best quarterback who currently calls Detroit home could well be Allen Iverson. At first, I chuckled. Then I thought about it and the chuckling stopped.

This could actually be true.

Now, maybe I'm wrong. It could be an absolutely absurd notion. But we're not talking about just any guy off the street here, we're talking about one of the world's finest athletes. And we're not talking about just any team with bad quarterbacks, we're talking about the 0-12 Lions, who the 2-10 Chiefs look at and say, "Thank goodness we don't have those quarterbacks."

Thirty-one NFL teams felt like Daunte Culpepper was not worth a phone call and the veteran's minimum salary. The Lions were the only team desperate enough to give him a ring. And not only that, they named him their starter just days after he signed the contract. No other team wanted him as a third quarterback. The Lions wanted him as their first.

Since then, Culpepper has a sickly 53.6 quarterback rating. Vince Young was better. Brooks Bollinger was better. Ryan Fitzpatrick is better. Tarvaris Jackson was better. Gus Frerotte is way better.

So realistically, what could we expect if Allen Iverson was placed under center for the Lions? Obviously, he'd have no knowledge of the offense, terminology, or how to read an NFL defense. These are hindrances. But those same problems don't stop JaMarcus Russell from going out there every week.

Iverson knows how to play quarterback, though. He played the position in high school and won a state title, and there are those who say he was better at football than basketball.

More importantly than that, though, there are things that great, highly-competitive athletes know and feel that translate to any sport. It's a desire to find an edge; it's the ability to learn on the fly the best way to get something done.

Great athletes have that. You don't get to Allen Iverson's level without being a smart player with amazing instincts.

Obviously, you wouldn't expect a 45-of-60, 380-yard passing performance from Iverson. He's not going to be Joe Montana. But you could put him in the shotgun, tell him to throw only when he sees an open guy, and just let him run around.

You could line up and do some crazy wildcat formation stuff, run some quarterback sweeps ... just let him make things happen.

And yeah, he'd see eight, possibly nine guys in the box. But again, Iverson can throw the football, and if he's going to see those kinds of fronts, he's got the speed and elusiveness to get away from the rush. From there, Calvin Johnson one-on-one against anyone isn't a bad option. Iverson can chuck a 50/50 ball up there as well as Daunte Culpepper, can't he?

I wouldn't argue for Iverson as a starter for any other team. This is a special case. And I wouldn't argue for Allen Iverson as a career NFL quarterback. There's a reason he went in the direction of basketball. He'd be the smallest quarterback in the modern era of the NFL.

But you look at the Lions right now, and at the quarterback position, and they're not getting anything from it. Not only is Culpepper not making big plays, but he's not even making the average plays. He gives you consistent, below-average play with no hope for a major benefit.

Put Iverson back there, though, and he's going to make things happen. He might have some major disasters. But he might also make some mind-blowing plays. At the very least, he'd make it difficult for opponents to prepare.

Certainly, it couldn't hurt the Lions, but that's not saying much. At 0-12, it wouldn't hurt the Lions to take the field in panties and paper party hats. That's not the question we're asking here.

We're asking if Iverson would honestly be the best option at quarterback for the Lions. We're asking if he'd give them a better chance to win than anyone else currently on the quarterback depth chart.

In a major upset, I say yes.

Two stars come to mind for being great at both football and basketball. Antonio Gates had an incredible career as a power forward in college, and probably could have made it to the NBA if he wanted. But even more impressive is LeBron James, he won awards in high school as a wide receiver, and I think he'd be just as good as Antonio Gates as a Tight End in the NFL (he's a bit too big to be a WR these days). It would be fun to see AI as a football player, but most high school quarterbacks do not go on to play QB in college - they move to WR or RB, or even DB sometimes. Even some college quarterbacks go on to the NFL at a different position - Matt Jones being the most recent example. AI would be best suited to running back - his agility would work great there.

Not only were they the only team that wanted him (although both the Chiefs and him admit to meeting) but they went just a tad over the veteran minimum....7 million for next year? And they wonder why they are 0-12? The upcoming draft will be the deepest possibly of all times but easily a top 5 ever for depth and why do we not have faith in their ability to turn 2 guys they pick into usable pieces? Matt Millen was a grade A disaster but he is hardly the only problem in Motown and as long as William Clay Ford is calling the shots they will continue to make incompetent hires. And is there an owner in any professional sport that deserves the stigma of being the worst ever other than Ford? I didnt think so, 7 winning seasons out of their last 35 and only one common denominator....W.C. Ford (Millen has only sucked for 7 years....what about the other 28 years?...Ford!). And the worst part in all of this is Ford has dumped on unbelievably great fans given the debacle he has offered up.....finally we are fed up enough to hit him right back in his wallet. And to think there are franchises out there that struggle with fan base but still dedicate themselves to presenting a good product with real goals of winning! Mr. Ford has been a disgrace to football and to Lions fans...now he is getting his, and personally I couldnt be happier!

Allen Iverson was a better quarterback than Ronald Curry. And yes, that is saying a great deal.

I agree, AI could be a pseudo Vick.
Even if he wasn't a great QB, he'd at least make the Lions exciting to watch
I agree with the podcast, make the Pistons into a football team. I'll watch them play over watching the Lions any day.

That really worked well for Jordan. I know you're trying to make an argument for Iverson vis-a-vis the other Detroit QBs, but in doing so you're really underestimating the ability of NFL defenses. Bad as the Lions are, at least their QBs are capable of surviving. Iverson would get destroyed. Very, very quickly.

Jordan was a mediocre minor league baseballer. And that's about the level the Lions are at, if there were minor league football. And if he was as good as a hypothetical mediocre minor league QB, he'd still be better than Culpepper.

Gray (post #11) hit the nail on the head -- the guy has an adversion to PRACTICE. Also, he would not be able to see over the line of scrimmage as he is about 5' 10" (forget what he is listed at). Lastly, he has enough trouble sharing the ball with 4 other guys on the floor right now, how would he be with 10 others (ok, 5 others not including the O-line).

Well they could always trade for Ronald Curry and put him behind center... LoL You get a fast guy that's been in the league as a WR so he can read defenses a little as well especially zone so he should be able to do something back there.

Gabriel you say only two come to mind well being a tarheels fan i must interject and say the most prominent dual college athlete was Mr. Julius Peppers... He was a best on the basketball court in his college days... As far as im concerned his absence from the b-ball team his last year is what lost them the champioship that year...

Iverson might work out okay for the occasional play.
You'd want to rotate him, Daunte (for the long ball), and some other guy to be named later. Just like the wildcat, putting Iverson out there, letting him go in motion while Daunte went from TE to QB... you could really get wild, and confuse the heck out of the defense for about 3 plays a game.

Vick had trouble seeing over the line, thats why he had 1,000+ rushing yards at the end of the season.
