Former Redskins quarterback and current North Carolina congressman Heath Shuler is no stranger to being ridiculed in Washington by people he thought were on his side. During his NFL stint in D.C., Shuler was routinely booed by 'Skins fans at RFK Stadium after not living up to the $17 million contract he signed after being selected with the fourth pick in the 1994 draft. Fifteen years have passed but not much has changed: Shuler is still getting ripped in the nation's capital.
The second-term Democrat recently criticized his party's leadership by saying "they failed at bipartisanship." This earned a sharp rebuke from Jim Manley, spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid:
Let me get this straight - this is coming from a guy who threw more than twice as many interceptions than touchdowns?
Ouch. That comeback seems to be a lot harsher than the original insult.
If the Democractic leadership stays angry with Shuler, it may only be a matter of time before there's a "We want Gus!" chant on the floor of Congress.
