Favre finally spits out an unequivocal 'no'

The question, of course, was, "Will you play football in 2009?" It was asked of Favre by former quarterback and current ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer via text message. For the exact wording, let's go to ESPN's Kevin Seifert:

On Monday, ESPN's Trent Dilfer put out a question to retired quarterback Brett Favre: Any chance you would consider playing in 2009?

Favre's response, via text: "NO." (Capitalization his.)

And that capitalization is no accident, my friend. Unless you're using a cell phone manufactured in 1992, you just can't text two capital letters next to each other without pressing an extra button or two on the keypad. Text messaging makes you work for that consecutive capitalization.

Therefore, I can only assume that Favre meant his "NO" emphatically.

Of course, the cynic might point out that Favre was also pretty emphatic around this time last year when he sat behind a microphone and cried like a child with a skinned kneecap at his "retirement" press conference.

But I don't feel like being cynical today, and, as I've said numerous times before on this website, I believe in second chances. So I'm going to take Brett Favre's word for it, and wholeheartedly believe him when he says that he's not playing football in 2009.

By doing this, I free myself from the obligation of having to care about it anytime someone posts another "Hey, Favre might come back!" article. I can just ignore it, stick to my steadfast belief that Favre is a man of his word, and go on with my day. It feels good to be free.

And if he does end up playing somewhere in 2009, I reserve my right to react with shock and indignation while calling him a dirty, dirty liar. Win win.

It's also too bad that TT is all about long term sustainability when there should be a mix between trying to win today & trying to win over the long haul. I say TT stocks the pack with more depth but few impact starters & the pack doesn't do much during the post season until a new more agressive GM comes in and actually scores a few impact FA's who are able to help our team of 2nd stringers into the promised land.

He still is the most exciting player in the league, as evidenced by the attention he gets.

thankyou for realizing the meaningless behind all the favre's coming back. he's retiring, he hates packers nonsense. The guy played too hard his whole career to have the media burn him all the time. Leave him alone already

Correction WAS the most exciting! TT is going in the right direction with the team. He like many others see the value in building for the future. That does not mean he does not want to win right now.Spending big money for has beens is not what he is about. Fans that complain about they want to win right now have no concept of running a team and should keep their opinions to themselves. Oh I'm sure your going to say that Ron Wolf did this and that and TT should have done this or that, the fact still remains, he knows what he is doing and you don't. Teams that build for right now fail fast(Oakland) teams that build for the future(New England)suceed! Scoreboard fools!

Who the hell is MJD? Favre cried like a child with a skinned kneecap? How about like a legend who was facing the end of life as he knew it? How about like a man who never gave up facing the fact that he didn't think he could be a hero on the field anymore? What does MJD know about any of that? You are an anonomous hack writing an online sports blurb, for all we know you are ten years old. If Favre wants to come back, even after saying "NO" a dozen times, he has earned the right. He doesn't have to answer to some two-bit punk blogger.

Wrenched1bad is a bonehead. How many Superbowls has TT won? Zero. Do you know how New England builds for the future? By picking up free agents when it makes sense, like Randy Moss last year. TT was asleep at the wheel while New England swooped in and bagged Moss for peanuts. TT will usually have a good team and will never have a great team because he is afraid to take that last step. TT cares about his legacy too much to ever really be successful in the NFL. Do your homework and you will see, if you want to win Superbowls these days, you have to know how to work free agency and the draft together.

I'm not convinced that Brett has or will recover from the arm/shoulder problem he had last year to the point he could play again making the whole issue moot.

The one thing that bothers me about Favre bashers is that they claim he is selfish and likes the attention he gets...If I remember right he was willing to take a pay cut so that GB could get Randy Moss if he needed to...he was making a sacrifice to help the team become contenders. Yeah he retired and then came back, who cares, how many qbs have as many consecutive starts as him? Let the guy enjoy his time off and dont bash him because the media brings up possible theories of what could happen. MJD let it go

the million $ question is? (will 10 million change his mind?)
i know it would make me get off the couch and start doing sit ups
all the vikings need is a QB , is their anyone better on the team or a free agent?
i don't think so, if its true that he hired a trainer? why?
if the vikings call will he just tell everyone "they made me an offer i couldn't refuse"
will you hate him for that? i wouldn't

    I have two comments ,
    1. tkabs go away
    2. niketour u r the bonehead , did the patriots go to the superbowl with moss ????????? and another thing while we are at it . TT got rid of Brett Fart to a team that also didnt make it to the superbowl . And Green Bay has one of the youngest teams in the NFL. Which means they will only get better.
