In case you didn't notice on Sunday, or in any of the prior four or five
weeks, Eli Manning and the Giants do not have a passing game that's going to
make anyone forget the Air Coryell Chargers or the Greatest Show on Turf Rams.
It's not even going to make anyone forget the Danny Kannell Giants.
Their passing game has been miserable without Plaxico Burress. Burress, of course, hasn't played since shooting himself in the leg. Literally, I mean. Not in the Titans-in-the-red-zone sense.
But Eli and just about everyone else on the Giants roster told the New York Post that they don't care how many times Plax shot himself, they'd still welcome him back. Some snippets:
Asked point blank yesterday whether he would want Burress back, Manning said: "Sure. Sure. He's a tremendous player and ... we just gotta see what happens there."
"I think he will be back," [running back Brandon] Jacobs said. "I think he should be back. I don't think he has a bad bone in his body, and I think everyone deserves a second chance."
"I think if Plaxico wants to be back here, I think he will be back," Justin Tuck said, "because I know this team, I know how we rally around people, especially our teammates. I would love to have him back. I think I speak for the majority of this football team when I say that."
"It's a fine line, the balance between mercy and justice," David Tyree said.
I gave the following numbers about the Giants with and without Plaxico on the last podcast. These are regular season numbers, and do not include the statistical mess for which Eli was responsible on Sunday:
| Eli's QB rating pre-Plaxico plugging himself: | 91.9 |
| Eli's QB rating post-Plaxico plugging himself: | 74.2 |
| Giants passing yards per game pre-Plaxico plugging himself: | 211 |
| Giants passing yards per game post-Plaxico plugging himself: | 183 |
| Giants passing TDs per game pre-Plaxico plugging himself: | 1.6 |
| Giants passing TDs per game post-Plaxico plugging himself: | 0.6 |
So yeah, it's not a huge surprise that they'd "take" him back. They absolutely need him, and shouldn't be above begging. If Plax can keep himself out of jail, I'd feel pretty confident that he'll have a job with the New York Giants.

I like Eli. He's better than any QB my beloved Ravens ever had, but he gets praise mainly because of his DNA rather than his play making ability.
Don't get me wrong, I do believe the boy can play the position...just not to the level of a ummmm....SuperBowl MVP! How the hell did that happen anyway? Whatever...
Anyway. After a game like he had on Sunday I'm pretty sure he'd take Burress back RIGHT NOW...even with the season being over. I'll bet he'd sleep better at night.

What makes people think Plax is going to change? He's been a diciplinary knightmare since day 1. Pittsburg didn't want him back, Giants got him (cheap at first) then he messed around with the ankle injury until they gave him a large contract. How many times do you need to see the sun rise in the East to look that way in the morning? Get a receiver with less "baggage" since the way Bloomberg was acting he's doing Jail time. Don't forget the 4 game suspension from the NFL Plax also has to do.

Phillip Rivers was our next Phil Simms and we gave him up for Eli. Except for 5 great games in a row last year, in the SB run, the balance of Eli's career is way too much Jekyl and Hyde for a pro team to have to make excuses for. THAT is a coaching problem. Can anybody tell my why Gilbride can't "teach" Eli to throw a spiral?
