Eli Manning's Super Bowl XLII co-MVP: Tiki Barber

That's how Tiki Barber sees things, anyway. I was wondering when Tiki would get around to taking credit for the Giants Super Bowl win.

From this William C. Rhoden article in the New York Times:

Retiring star players often set the foundation for future success. In Barber’s case, his criticism of Coach Tom Coughlin and of Manning might have paid dividends this season. You can argue that Barber’s tactics became too public. But often, the only way to bring about change is to confront — sometimes embarrass — authority. Barber laid the foundation for what happened this season, from taking on Coughlin, to challenging Manning to step up, to tutoring Brandon Jacobs.

“I feel great joy for them because I know in a lot of ways I helped a lot of guys on that team,” Barber said. “I know Brandon was someone who benefited from me being there; even criticizing someone is a way of getting them to think about themselves.”

I asked Barber if he thought his criticism of Manning helped prod him out of a shell. “I don’t know, cause Eli doesn’t pay attention, ” Barber said laughing. “In this case, it made him stand up and I guess become aware.”

How magnanimous! What a swell guy, that Tiki Barber. He had all these special and insightful ways to help the New York Giants, but he chose not to help them while he was there, but he waited until after he quit on them, and then went of his way to offer the expert critiques (and not bitter criticism) that would spur the team to greatness. It's the most selfless thing I've ever heard. Tiki Barber is a friend to the Giants!

Either that, or he was a whiny little skirt on the way out the door, and when he quit, a once-divided locker room was able to come together. I somehow doubt that Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning heard Tiki's critiques and said, "You know, Tiki's right, and we should be thankful for his guidance." More likely is that they heard his bitching and everyone came together in a spirit of "Screw that guy, we're better off without him."

But if that counts as helping, then yeah, Tiki Barber was a great help. The guy's a damn saint.

Truth is after tiki's comments we went 0-2. he is a modern nfl player...me me me, nothing to do with team + family. there has never been a retired great who lashed out at his team after retirement on national television like he did. he is a discrace to the whole giant family. it is no wonder why when tiki is shown on the jumbotron in giants stadium he is booed.

What do you expect from a guy usually up there competing for the rushing title? He performed well but wasn't able to accept a role.

you all should read the whole article by william c. rhoden and not mouth off from just 2 paragraphs. rhoden is a respected columnist. he cites an email from one of the giants veteran council members saying he missed tiki and that his criticisms did help. i think they spurred coughlin to becoming more accessible to the players, including establishing the veterans council. everyone agrees that coughlin's new approach was a big factor in the giants' success this year. i, too, was really pissed at tiki -- until i read rhoden's column -- in its entirety, not just a 'sound bite.'

Oh come on now, how in the heck can this man think that any credit should go to him? The guy quit on the Giants and decided that he had enough. How long did it take him to bad mouth his former coach and his former quarterback after retirement? The guy was a good running back but please, can we say cancer in the club house!
The beauty of the Giants winning the Superbowl is that it happended the year after Tiki Barker quit. How's that for timing! It says it all! And add to that was the fact that Jeremy Shockey, the other loud mouth, couldn't play because of a broken leg. The two, coincidentally, were missing from the Superbowl triumph and celebration!
There is nothing better than to see justice served!!!! Go G-MEN!

I guess none of you guys saw the interview givin by coughlin _ In which he stated, he was personally lightning up, and taking responsibilty..changing his ways.. not being so hard on his guys; he went on to add that, personally everyone should aspire to become a greater human being, change whats wrong within yourself, and reach a higher point... The subsequent articles that came out went on to add that his attitude change paid dividends..hmmm I wonder when and how he got the idea that he needed change... and how do we suppose it payed dividends?

Shawn Alexander is a great man off the field. It sounds like Tiki Barber was all about criticizing people. I cannot imagine Shawn Alexander ever doing that.

Its just amazing how people (especially the media) love to take things out of context and create a villian. NICE SPIN GUYS. People need to step back and look at the situation without bias. Although that is probably asking too much; since the whole reason the media is successful at what they do is because the sheep are so easy to manipulate.
Whatever stance you take on Tiki Barber, the fact of the matter is, many times he is asked specific questions. Interesting how only his partial answers are reported in pathetic bitter diary entries that somehow pass for legitimate reading. Yes, I am talking to you, MJD.

That big toothed twit should stick to hanging out with his right wing friends and fashion shows and leave the super bowl wins to real men/teams. He was and should be embarrassed that his legacy will now and always be that of a quiter. He used hs ex-teammates and embarrassed them in order to sell books and get his big teeth on tv and now he tries to take credit? Could you imagine "gums" giving the second effort eli and david did on the play of the year? My only solace is that once his 15minutes is uo he will be gone from tv as he has NO persona or chemistry aside from when he's talking football. Good riddance to bad rubbish tiki. The giants don't miss you, the fans don't want to hear from you. Go hang out with your "studdly" fox and friends buddies!
