Shutdown Corner - NFL

According to NFL supervisor of officials Mike Pereira, Ed Hochuli is "devastated" at what went down in Denver on Sunday. If you missed it, Hochuli made an inexplicable mental gaffe--I won't call it a "blown call" or "missed call" because I think it goes a little beyond that--that almost directly cost the Chargers a loss against the Broncos.

From Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union Tribune:

No one, it appears, is taking the mistake and its ramifications harder than Hochuli.

"He's devastated," said Mike Pereira, the NFL's supervisor of officials. "... I was talking to Ed within 10 minutes after the game was over, and he was sick. He's still sick (yesterday).

"Everybody works so hard and wants to be perfect in a game you're not likely to ever be perfect. I've talked to him three times. He's really struggling with the fact he made such a bad call."

Hochuli's also manning up and taking his e-mail lumps. His e-mail address isn't hard to find with a simple Yahoo! search, and he's been bombarded with hate mail. And still, he's replying to everyone. Someone relayed the following reply from Hochuli to a message board at the San Diego Union Tribute.

I'm getting hundreds of emails – hate mail – but I'm responding to it all. People deserve a response.

You can rest assured that nothing anyone can say can make me feel worse than I already feel about my mistake on the fumble play. You have no idea ...

Affecting the outcome of a game is a devastating feeling. Officials strive for perfection – I failed miserably. Although it does no good to say it, I am very, very sorry.

Ed Hochuli

No one was more upset about the call than me, I promise you. I was driving to a friend's house after the game, and had to stop at a local convenience store so I could throw a child-like fit and kick inanimate objects. I said things about Ed Hochuli in the hours after the loss that could've gotten me arrested. Eventually, my grief took the form of a letter from Ed's dog.

But knowing now that Hochuli feels so bad about it, it sort of takes some of the venom out of me. It's hard to hate a guy who knows he screwed up and feels bad about it.

It's just so hard to understand why he blew that whistle. A ball went flying backwards out of the quarterback's hand. In what way would that lead anyone to believe that a play should be blown dead? Why would it even occur to him to blow the whistle?

It's not like Hochuli missed a hold, or botched a pass interference call. I rarely complain about mistakes like that. There are so many shades of gray on every play, and there's so much to see. Judgment calls will be blown, and that, I've learned to live with.

This was different, though. Hochuli wasn't making a judgment. There's no way he could look at what Jay Cutler did from any angle and conclude that he threw a forward pass, any more than you could watch Ryan Seacrest wax his chest and then conclude that mashed potatoes are delicious. It just couldn't happen.

Anyway, the man feels bad about it, he's been punished, and I think I can start to let it go now. Hopefully someday, I'll once again be able to look at Ed Hochuli and see a fine official with great pecs, instead of the guy who handed Denver a win.

digg delicious

I don't think Ed should be punished for making a bad call, in fact he is one of the better Refs in the league. I think the rules need to be changed. When you have explicit video replay evidence that the call was bad, it should be able to be overturned no matter what was called on the field. I think it is to easy to miss a call and if you have instant replay then use it to its full potential. The San Diego Chargers won that game in the eyes of everyone, but the coach of Denver and the Denver faithful. Denver lost that game and the people who created the rule that "you can't use instant replay to overturn a missed call if such and such happened...."should be punished, removed or confronted to re-visit that ridiculous rule.

I agree I thinkg its time to ease up on the guy. I mean he blew it and he knows. Some refs wouldn't even care that they blew the game. And its not like this is it for the Charges, theres still 14 games left to go. I think it would be even worse if it was a playoff game. I mean its just game 2 of the regualr season.

Yes, exactly...he is HUMAN!!!! I bet Norv Turner has blown a couple of games in his life, that cost his teams games!!! Well that is unacceptable!!!! Anyways Ed was following the rules that the NFL had set, so I don't see why the have to downgrade him. I think Goodell is just looking for a scapegoat because of a stupid NFL rule.

Just game two...let it go...blah...blah...blahhh...there are no excuses for his gaffs. He needs to be held accountable. Peoples careers hang in the balance of his decisions. If he can't make proper ones, he doesn't belong out there with them.

Give me a break. The guy is human not a machine, thus humans make mistakes. I am sure from his vantage point it looked like the quarterbacks arm was going forward. Regardless, I have seen other refs make bigger errors than that and nothing, I mean nothing was said. Ed, you have my support. Keep working hard. You are still one of the best in the league. You can call my games anytime.
Also, to all you Charges fans and players, what happen on the two-point conversion? Ed did not have anything to do with that. That was all on your players. They could have ended the game then, but they got punked. Who lets someone convert on two-point conversion in their house? Stop your whinning and get ready for the next game.

Why would they down grade him for this one play? That is so stupid. This guy has called the super bowl and now you are going to tell me because of one bad call you are going to down grade him. This is just senseless!

The way I saw it, Ed was the closest guy to Cutler but he had the exact wrong angle on the play, he was standing directly BEHIND Cutler so he could not see exactly when the ball came out of his hand. But why would he blow the whistle immediately? Because NFL refs are conditioned to "Protect the QB". That was 100% a protect-the-QB call.

Mike made a good call going for two, challenging the chargers after that call. The chargers still had an oppurtunity to win the game and they blew it. The broncos deserved the win no matter what with that challenge.

Yeah, Denver did outplay us for almost tthree quarters, but it was huge for the Chargers to come back like that. The momentum certainly shifted to the Chargers. They had the lead when the Ref. made that bad call. Chargers win if he makes the right call. It doesn't matter that Denver made the 2 point conversion. S.D. wins if Mr. Ref. makes the correct call.

Of course he is human but this isn't his his first "mistake" or questionable call that hasn't changed the face of the AFC west ...Raiders Vs. Pats. Unfourtunately refs/umps are held to a higher standard and with all the questionable conduct of refs in other leauges whos to know if things are truly mistakes anymore? If a player made an error in judgement more than once he would be fined, and possibly suspended why shouldn't the people who officate the game be held accountable?

The 2 point conversion doesn't seem like much of a risky call. Given the way the game was called it looks like Denver would have got a penalty flag against San Diego if the play failed.

Poor Ed, thinks everyone deserves a response. Most of the hatemail he's receiving is from childish idiots who would probably boo the refs in a pee wee football game filled with 5 year olds that really suck at football. They don't deserve a response, and they probably suck worse at their own jobs.

Ed is awesome. Too bad the Charger fans cannot accept the the guy is a human and is capable of making mistakes. I am a Charger fan and even though I was bummed about the call I realize that is part of the game, now if those that never have made a mistake can just stop whinning!

its nothing new, look at all the [profane]ty calls last night in the dallas-philly game. why cant you review a penalty? and why cant these refees get calls right after reviewing them? i thought that was the idea of a review. all the reviews do now is make the refees look even worse then before we had reviews.
