Shutdown Corner - NFL

-- The story practically was writing itself: Emotionally drained following a tumultuous week, the New York Giants came out flat against a division rival, thus leading to questions about whether the Plaxico Burress situation would begin a New York free-fall. When the Eagles lined up for a chip-shot 32-yard field goal on the final play of the first half, it looked like they'd go to the locker room with a commanding 13-point lead. Instead, the Giants got a jailbreak on the snap, the David Akers kick was blocked and, after some poor tackling and ever poorer effort (L.J. SMITH), Kevin Dockery scampered into the endzone with a 71-yard touchdown. Suddenly, it was 10-7 and the Giants stole all the momentum away from the shell-shocked Eagles. Plaxico who?

-- Kidding. The whole "the Giants won't miss Plaxico" thing is preposterous. It doesn't mean they can't win the Super Bowl without him, but it's a whole lot harder with Domenik Hixon as the number one target. (Hixon already has dropped a sure touchdown today.)

-- A mini-fracas erupted in the Lions-Vikings game (which Detroit leads 6-3) after Jared Allen was hurt on an illegal cut block by Gosder Cherilus. A brief kerfuffle ensued, Allen went out of the game (but soon returned) and order was restored... until the next play when Vikings linebacker Napoleon Harris and Lions fullback Moran Norris got into it. Norris threw a punch and was promptly ejected. It's tough to blame Allen for charging Cherilus after the block. It did appear dirty, plus, it's not like Jared Allen would ever irresponsibly put somebody else's life at risk.

-- The most entertaining game of the day is taking place in New Orleans, as the Saints hold a 16-14 halftime lead over Atlanta. But these two teams aren't in the NFC East, so we are allowed to ignore them until we're forced to pay attention in January.

First off anyone who actually knows football would not call that a cheap shot. I am getting sick and tired of hearing that hit on Allen was a cheap shot. It was a player doing his job. After making a play and seeing Allen running full speed in your direction knowing your QB's behind you making a play. WHY THE HELL would you just let him run by? No flag it's football and Allen is nothing but an ACTOR. He acted as if his career was over with that hit. You can see he was faking it to make a point. He should have been the one thrown out of the game. Get a grip please.

Meh ... the Giants are still 11-2 and if the Cowboys lose, they'll be set.

that was the worst cheap shot I have seen for years, injured or not, at least the linemen are going 100 mph to the qb and trying to stop on a dime when they get nailed for a cheap shot, that big oaf was just lying on the ground, beaten by an oponent, that was cheap, cheap, cheap

That was a cheap shot. Honestly, that guy was on the ground and unable to make a proper block and basically hit a "defenseless" player at the knees. I don't think he was trying to hurt allen but made a very poor decision. Nonetheless, it was cheap, whether intended to or not. I think the guy has to atleast get fined by the league. Going low on an unsuspecting player intentionally is as bad as helmet to helmet. Both are dangerous. As to the person saying Allen was acting. I really want to know what game you were watching. We have all seen qbs and running backs hit that in the same place, with their knee bending the same way resulting in ligament tears.

That was a clean block. And even if it were a cheap shot, there's no more deserving recipient than Allen.
