The Miami Dolphins went into their Sunday game against the Tennessee Titans with a mild quarterback controversy, as veteran Chad Pennington(notes) replaced Chad Henne(notes) after a few rough starts. The Dolphins came out of that game with a 29-17 win, but they were suddenly down two quarterbacks with possible season-ending injuries. Pennington's injury came very early in the first quarter - he's recovered from several shoulder injuries before, but this, a dislocated shoulder, could end his career.
Henne's happened in the third quarter; he suffered a knee injury while attempting a pass. He will undergo an MRI to determine the extent of his injury, but he was on crutches after the game, and it didn't look too good on the field.
The Dolphins ran a few Wildcat plays with running back Ronnie Brown(notes) taking snaps before third-string quarterback Tyler Thigpen(notes) came in and looked good, completing four of six passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. Thigpen was pressed into service for the 2008 Kansas City Chiefs when starters Damon Huard(notes) and Brodie Croyle(notes) were hurt, and he completed 230 passes in 420 attempts for 2,608 yards, 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. With the Dolphins going to a short week, and playing the Chicago Bears this upcoming Thursday, Thigpen would be the obvious starter.
However, if both Pennington and Henne are gone for the year, that would leave Brown as the second quarterback. According to Mike Berardino and Omar Kelly of SunSentinel.com, the Dolphins have contacted former Oakland Raiders bust JaMarcus Russell(notes) for a workout. Current UFL quarterbacks Daunte Culpepper(notes) and Jeff Garcia(notes) could be candidates, as could ex-Dolphins quarterback Pat White(notes), who was selected in the second round of Miami's 2009 draft. White disappointed and was released in September, but with such a short time to deal with the most important position on the field, the Dolphins may want to sign anyone even remotely familiar with the current playbook.
