Shutdown Corner - NFL

There was some thought that Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox might finally yank Jake Delhomme from his starting lineup this week, but Fox has opted against it. Delhomme, who has been turning the ball over like it's his job, is still QB1 for the Panthers.

Some quick facts about Jake Delhomme's(notes) interception output this season:

• Delhomme's thrown 13 interceptions so far this season

• Delhomme has thrown five more interceptions than JaMarcus Russell(notes)

• Delhomme has thrown as many interceptions as Derek Anderson(notes) and Trent Edwards(notes) combined

• Delhomme is on pace to throw 42 this year, which would tie George Blanda's record for the most picks in a season

• Forty-two interceptions would shatter the record since the league went to a 16-game regular season in 1978, which is currently held by Vinny Testaverde(notes) (35 in '88)

He's the lowest-rated quarterback in the league who has not been benched. This makes me curious about what Matt Moore(notes) and A.J. Feeley(notes) look like in practice.

When John Fox comes out for practice and says, "Alright, gentlemen, we're going to work on some footwork drills today," does Matt Moore say, "Nah, I think I'm going to go over here and do the worm"? Does A.J. Feeley bring Play-Doh out to the practice field with him, and build Smurf villages all day?

I wonder if John Fox isn't being a little too loyal here. Obviously, the man can coach football, but he and Delhomme have been together for a long time. Loyalty is great, and we probably see too little of it in the NFL, but at the same time, the priority always has to be doing the best thing to help your football team win. That's what the paycheck is for.

DeAngelo Williams(notes) deserves that. Steve Smith deserves that. Jon Beason(notes) deserves that. Every Panther who lines up and breaks their back to try to get a win every week deserves the best quarterback the team has.

And hey, maybe that is still Delhomme. Maybe John Fox believes his quarterback can work through the issues he has right now, and that the real Jake Delhomme -- the one who had never before thrown more than 16 interceptions in an entire season -- is still inside somewhere, struggling to get out. That could be true.

For Carolina's sake, though, I hope the decision's being made for the right reasons. Loyalty would not be one of those. Winning football games would be.

i love the panthers, i have for 10 years. if jake f'ing delhomie has another monumental disaster of a game and keeps his starting job the next week, im done... he threw 20 picks in the nfc championship game last year and the panthers organization gave him a new contract or contract extension? are you f'ing kidding me? take a page from the a team in the same division, the new orleans saints. they do it right....and not to mention, you should have just traded julius. he doesn't wanna be there. he told you he didn't wanna be there and guess what. he is playing like he doesn't wanna be there...start changing things or im going to.

Not sure MJD has ever claimed to be a mathematician....but yeah, it is 35 ints, not 42.
I think Jake wants to get pulled, so he can stop the bleeding. Let someone else try and play behind that awful line.
So I am not sure loyalty is involved, it may be a punishment thing for Fox to keep Jake in. lol

You may have a point that Jake wants to be pulled. He can't come out and say that though as the looks like Kerry Collins. I thnk Fox and Hurney are stuck with Jake. They're the one's that ponied up the big money to extend him and it's probably their jobs that are on the line. If they bench Jake, how does that make them look after that bizarre extension?
I'd like to see Matt Moore. We know he can do ok on short notice as evidenced two years ago. If it's 3 years later and you can't put him in, then there is a problem and that starts with the coaching staff.

I think it's something like this. the owners give Jake a hefty extension and a raise. He has to play him after all the new money he was given. Does he have a choice? He must try and make that decision work. I feel sorry for him. Jake is through; I think he knows it.

Fox doesn't know which players "Give us the best chance to win" The same thing happened when it was Peete/Delhomme.. Loyalty or hidden print in contracts, I don't know.. Either way, he's notorious for starting players way after they should have benched for the man behind em.. ie: Foster for Williams.. I'm ready for a new Staff, Fox and Co have killed my joy of Panthers Football. I enjoy watching just about any other team play over the Panthers. Sad considering I haven't missed a game since the start of the Seifert era and stuck by them 100% through that debacle..

#6 "awful line" umm.....panthers o-line is 16th in sacks allowed and 13th in total rushing yards ahead of Steelers, Vikings, and Packers in sacks allowed and in total rushing yards (except for Vikings ). So I really don't think the Panthers O-line is to blame for Delhomme's mistakes.

Is that even a question? Of course he is being too loyal. And his loyalty is going to lead him right to a pink slip...and it's too bad, because with a good QB this team has a lot of potential.

If the line can't protect the QB then no QB can play well. Smitty is not playing up to par and running wrong routs and Moose is just not young anymore. The other two options we have are not really an option. AJ can't run this system and Matt doesn't read defenses well enough yet. They stuck with Jake because he is the best option at this time. Jake has had some bad games let's see how he bounces back

I betcha the Saints defense can't wait for the 11/8 game against Carolina. Darren Sharper is probably anticipating getting at least two or three more INTs in that game.

Jake has got to sit, but it isn't all on him. The line can create huge holes for the running game but can't pass block this year. And the receivers aren't exactly getting open or holding on to the ball. I'm a Bears guy and when Mush was with our team he constantly whined about who the QB was and then dropped passes from all of them. Bench Jake but the problems will still be there.
