Shutdown Corner - NFL

Ben Roethlisberger(notes) went out to Bethpage Black, site of this year's U.S. Open, and shot a freakin' 81. I don't know if the course was set up to U.S. Open difficulty, but regardless, that's pretty damn good. If the course plays anything like it did the last time the Open was at Bethpage, there will be pros who have rounds worse than 81.

Matt Millen got the NFL Network's Thursday night gig, alongside play-by-play guy Bob Papa. Millen's in a really tough spot. He's going to have to be really, really good for a really, really long time before anyone's willing to take him seriously again.

• If you missed it, Vince Young(notes) opened up over the weekend about his rough times with the Titans. Yes, he did think seriously about quitting football. No, he says, he was never going to kill himself.

• Michael Irvin chimed in on the Brett Favre situation over the weekend. I really, really like Michael Irvin.

• The 2010 NFL Draft will be not in April, but early May next year. That's just more time for you to shine, Mel Kiper.

• Dolphins quarterback Pat White(notes), after being the most accurate passer at the NFL Combine, continues to struggle in practices with the Dolphins. Most recently, he pegged Bill Parcells's golf cart. He didn't mean to.

• The Ravens believe they have another undrafted free agent gem: Kevin Joseph Gerard, a defensive back out of Northern Arizona.

• Here's a list of the ten best quarterbacks who are not currently in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

• The Dolphins are another team -- the Bills were mentioned earlier -- using martial arts training to improve themselves.

Donald Driver(notes) is a choker. At softball.

I just talked to Michael Irvin and he had this to say about the Brett Favre situation. "It's unfair to criticize Brett because he is contemplating retirement once again. His decision is based on what the entire family agrees upon, not just Brett's opinion. Leave him alone people. He's my quarterback, man! He's my quarterback!" And now you know the rest of the story......good day! Discuss!

I've never played Bethpage Black, but from what I've heard the USGA doesn't have to do much to make it any tougher for the U.S. Open than what it plays every day. I'm a 7 Handicap and 81 at The Black sounds damn good to me.

I was at the bethpage black course with my 15 yr old daughter Ashley and watched Big Ben shhot the 81. It was awesome watching Big Ben play the course. The best part of the day was when Big Ben signed my daughter Ashley's jersey, superbowl ticket and took a picyure with her after the round was over. Priceless.
