Shutdown Corner - NFL

"Cry, Whine and Moan" is a weekly Sunday evening feature where fans of victory-challenged teams can gather to commiserate. Feel free to vent your frustration with your team's players, coaches or management in the comments below. And please, fans of teams who aren't on the list: Leave those less fortunate alone. This post is a taunting-free zone. The losers deserve that much.

Washington Redskins. It wouldn't feel right to make fun of the Redskins this week, because the guys on the defensive side of the ball all did their jobs, and then some. As for the offense and the coaching staff ...

The following quotes are passed along from Dan Steinberg's DC Sports Bog, your online home for postgame quotes that somehow find a way to further humiliate the Redskins. The Redskins needlessly burned two timeouts in the second half. Here's Jim Zorn explaining the first one:

"Well, shoot," he said. "Yeah. We got caught on a clock, and I really don't know how it happened, because I felt like we got the play in, I felt like we were out of the huddle, and we were down to :01 [on the clock] before we knew it. Absolutely have no idea how that happened. Because we were moving in and out of the huddle pretty well then.

And here's Jim Zorn explaining the second one.

"And then on the second timeout, that use of timeout, that was just so frustrating to me. We hurt Jason on that play. I hurt him, because I didn't have the needed call, and we got caught on time again, where we had a shift and a motion and I had to call timeout because it wasn't gonna be [snapped in time]. It was just totally mine, totally on me. I screwed us out of that timeout. I did everything I could just to maintain my composure, and then it absolutely had an issue at the end of this football game, so it's just on me."

I think we're about two Redskins losses away from Jim Zorn sitting in front of the mic at postgame press conferences, pulling out an acoustic guitar and singing a song he wrote called, "If You Had Any Shred of Mercy in Your Soul, You'd Fire Me Right Now."

Cleveland Browns. You've got absolutely nothing to be ashamed about this week, Browns. Any bad team can be boring. But you and the Lions went out there and made a hell of a football game out of something that should've only drained our collective will to live. That is a contribution. I'm absolutely serious about that. Thank you, Cleveland Browns, for what you did today.

Buffalo Bills. I have no Bills or Jaguars on my fantasy team, I had nothing else riding on the game, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't even have noticed if CBS decided not to send a camera crew down to Jacksonville for this one. I realize that that's unfair since the Jags are 6-4 and a playoff contender, but I think on a subconscious level I see that no one in Jacksonville even cares, so that makes me not care myself.

Seattle Seahawks. Brett Favre(notes) completed 22-of-25 passes for an 89% completion rate to go with his four touchdowns. Is that it, Seattle? You're going to let him leave town with just that? What about his hot oil rubdown, or the personal one-on-one concert from Sir Mix-a-Lot?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Josh Freeman(notes) is playing, learning, making mistakes and hopefully learning from these mistakes. That's the good news, slight as it may be.

St. Louis Rams. Way to hang around in the second half and threaten to make a comeback, Rams. Late in that game, you didn't like look like a 1-9 team to me. Somewhere around 3-7, maybe.

Denver Broncos. That makes four losses in a row, and if Kyle Orton's(notes) ankle doesn't get healthy soon, I feel pretty confident that it'll become five on Thanksgiving night. Chris Simms(notes) is a loooooong way away from his 2005 "prime," which wasn't that great to begin with. Orton wasn't himself, either, with the bum ankle. If that doesn't get fixed, a 6-0 start is going to be wasted.

Pittsburgh Steelers. I think Mike Tomlin called Marvin Lewis after last week's game and said, "Listen, that game was tough on both of us. We can keep fighting it out for the division after Thanksgiving, but what do you say we both just take this weekend off?" An agreement was made, and there was joy in Kansas City and Oakland.

Cincinnati Bengals. Honest question: When Bruce Gradkowski(notes) stepped in and won his first game as a starter, do you think JaMarcus Russell(notes) said to himself, "Wow, I've really got a lot to learn" or, "If it had been me in there, we'd have won by 30"?

22 divided by 25 equals an even 88%. Trust me, I have a degree in mathematics.

There's really no reason for the Steelers to "Cry, Whine and Moan" about today. Yes, they lost to a 2-7 Kansas City Chiefs game that should NOT have won this game...BUT..it came in overtime, and it came after Big Ben was (probably--rough guess on my part) concussed. In over time no less.
Yes, they lost. But they also, unless I confuse my football math with real math, are still 1 game behind the Bengals, as well as ahead of the Ravens whom they play this weekend.
The game stunk, yes. But it's nothing to "Cry, Whine and Moan" about.

I've been a diehard 'Skins fan since '79. Today we showed that we still only have half a team. The defense was there today inspite of a few critical errors (oh, those pick off should've beens!) But until we get someone on the offense (not Campbell - he still needs much seasoning) to stand up and lead - in the huddle, and on the line, we will continue to lose. Defense alone doesn't win games. It can't. The offense needs to wake up and start driving deep for the end zone. They need to start going for 20 yards instead of those nice safe 2 yard dump offs.

NO CHANGE IN THE AFC NORTH!! Thank you, almighty Football Gods, for allowing the Bengals to lose to a crappy team, too. Let's just not let this happen again. Get well, Troy! We all miss you very much and the D shows it! And, Ben, every woman in the bar today commented on how fat you look nowadays. Stop eating the lifetime supply cans of Campbell's Chunky Soup and start lifting them instead. Go Steelers!!! (or I'll just devote my tv time to watching the Penguins)

Without even getting into the specifics of the games- at least the Ravens lost to a 10-0 team that has Peyton Manning as a QB. It hurt to loose but it was fun to watch the Pitt and Cincy go down! And yeah the Browns?!!! Watch out for those that have nothing to loose...

I'm not a Redskins fan, but I'd cry too if $41 million dollars of my team's money watched from the sidelines as Tony Romo led an untouched 60-yard drive for the game-winning touchdown.
The only thing Al Davis has on Daniel Snyder is about 35 years in age.

As for Russell's view of the game: "We're talking about practice".
He didn't know it was a real game today.

No one is a game killer like that [profane] Redskin's place kicker. I hate that loser. He killed our team in the playoffs a few years ago by missing a chip shot when we had all the momentum. What a freaking d-bag. Worst kicker in the league! I don't want to hear about how those are the only two he missed all year or any of that crap. Any true Redskin fan should feel the same way I do.

Darth Snyder is laughing all the way to the bank. He and Vinny 'bug eyes' Cerratto have destroyed a once proud franchise. I stopped watching these bums two weeks ago...they are literally unwatchable. Shame.

Honestly I feel bad for Jim Zorn, he was thrust into way too much power and it's taking him too long to realize it if he hasn't already. Daniel Snyder needs to fire Cerrato, and hire a new coach and let him make some decisions. Until at least Cerrato, if not Snyder is, we will not have a good team. They have made terrible choices in where to help the team. 100 million dollars to Haynesworth? Really? How about our offensive line? The one that is so pummeled, so old, why don't we help that out? Our RB can't run and our QB can't throw because they neither have the holes or the protection as they should. Give that a boost, it would have saved us a lot of games.

And then that hair, in the Jim Zorn picture, it's like there's a big L, for LOSER, sticking up out of the front of his head...I mean who cut the poor guy's hair, so he looks like a West Virginie Hillbilly...I feel for the guy, I really do. But it's like: What are you doing coaching an NFL team, when you should be on episodes of "Hootenanny," sorry for showing my age, but, Jim is old enough to understand that remark...
And meanwhile, out here in Seattle, we get stuck with the other half of this hillbilly duo, with our Jimbo Mora, inbred cousin, it would seem, of little Jim "the Bob" Zorn.
Someone tell me please: Why are these men coaching.
And, when, for God'sakes, are you going to start humiliating our coach, like he so richly deserves, as our once, and far more recently, proud 'Hawks plummet to three and seven.

The Redskins hired Vinny Ceratto 7 years ago, to rebuild the team again. He drafted this bunch of guys and hired Jim Zorn. Is that enough said? Regarding Jason Campbell - it all depends on which numbers you look at: His, which would seem fine, or the bottom line. 3-7. He is not an NFL Championship qb. Ceratto bemoaned that we were 2-5, because he said they thought we would be 3-3 at that point. When your leader thinks you should be mediocre and you fall short it is time to get new leadership.

Ok 'Skins fans I knw its bad. Probably the worst in franchise history. And I knw u all probably want Jim Zorn's head on a platter but hold that anger in and look at the facts. Teams such as the Steelers and Patriots have built up due 2 patience and continuity. The 'Skins havent had either 4 a long time. Changing coaches like dirty undies is not helping ur team! It takes time 2 build a winning team especially one in such disaray. Look how long it took Cowher in Pittsburgh and its gonna take any coach that long or longer 2 fix what's wrong in Washington.

Can we put Zorn and Lewis on the permanent disabled list? He is truly the worst coach I have ever seem and bingo boy brings nothing to the table. There are a lot of talented coaches available now. Rid yourself of the mindless Ceratto and hire someone that knows football.
