Shutdown Corner - NFL

When Rex Ryan was hired by the New York Jets and finally had a spotlight all to himself, I didn't even consider the possibility that he might be as crazy as his father, Buddy. Perhaps I was hasty in that. Rex Ryan is showing the potential for some real craziness here, and his players are responding.

He's had this ongoing back-and-forth with Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder(notes) (pictured to the right, in happier times with his friend Snowflake). It started innocently enough, with Ryan declaring that he wasn't intimidated by any of the competition in the AFC East. Here's the quote:

"I never came here to kiss Bill Belichick's rings," Ryan said in an interview on WFAN. "I came here to win, let's put it that way.... I'm certainly not intimidated by New England or anybody else."

Nothing to do with Crowder, right? Ah, but you forget that Crowder's been hanging out with Joey Porter(notes), and thus, his ability to take offense at anything is extremely heightened. Here was Crowder's response (to something that had very little to do with him):

"Oh he's going crazy. He's going absolutely nuts," Crowder said. "I know it's his first chance to be a head coach, and I know he's excited about life. But I've never played a football game in June in my life. So congratulations to him. He's the OTA Super Bowl winner."

Very nice. Poke fun of him as a rookie head coach, and congratulate him as the "OTA Super Bowl winner." Tremendous technique. He really has been learning from Joey Porter. Ryan shot back, though.

"I don’t know this Channing Crowder. All I know is that he’s all tatted up, so I  guess I ought to be nervous about him. If I was younger, I’d probably handle him myself."

Ooooh. The old "I don't even know who you are" bit. It can be effective when used properly, but when you're the head coach, and he's a starting linebacker for a division rival, you sort of insult yourself when you say you haven't heard of him. The advantage shifts back to Crowder. And today, Crowder went to hammer home the victory (via the Miami Herald).

"Oh, Lord have mercy," Crowder said Tuesday. "What's wrong with him? Now he's talking about preparation? We play them twice this year. If he wants to be prepared, shouldn't he know the starting middle linebackers of his division rival?"

And the jab scores.

"He says he'd take care of me if he was younger?" Crowder said. "I'd have beat the hell out of that big old joker. Or if he really wants to get retro, my daddy or my uncle could have handled him. Don't get big. Win with preparation? Start watching some tape and learn who your rival is. Come on now."

Body blow! Body blow! Knock him out!

The Jets "didn't even win the division and now they're all talking about how [the AFC East] goes through New England,'' Crowder said Tuesday. "That's what gets me bothered. I don't care about the other stuff, but don't say the division goes through New England.

"It goes through Miami."

Hopefully, that won't be the end of it, and these two will keep the back-and-forth going until someone actually gets punched in the face.

But I doubt that will happen. Eventually, both of them will wake up and realize that while their public urination match escalates, the Patriots are quietly going about the business of actually getting ready, and will probably steamroll both of them.

Love the attitude of Coach Ryan. They haven't had this type of Bravado since Parcells and I believe that the players themselves will go through walls for him.

Nice. Well done, MJD. The point about the Pats quietly going about preparing to win the division cannot be overlooked or understated.

Crowder might want to hold his tongue a little. Since 1998 the jets have won 17 out of 22 meeting with Miami.

Who cares where it goes through, Miami or New England, because in actuality it doesn't go through New York and it wont until they can get a real coach and a quaterback. Their talking all this garbage on hope and dreams here... when you can't win your division with one of the greatest quaterbacks in the history of the game and your without a good set of recievers. Everyone needs to chill out realize the Jets are second class in New York and in the Division and just show up and play it out on the field.

Fins made the playoffs, Jets and Pats didn't. We're the defending AFC East Champs. Period. We'll see what happens this year...

dolphins got lucky last year on a soft schedule. defending east champ? they now face one of the hardest schedules in the nfl this year. whats gonna happen if CP struggles like he did against Baltimore in the playoffs and gets replaced by "rookie" chad henne. i see the fins 3 or 4 in the east.

Oh, its because of the fins' last place schedule? I guess it didnt matter that they beat the stinkin Jets, at NY, the last game of the season with the division on the line. I guess that the Fins kicking the Patsys arses in New England didn't matter either.

Chad Henne will be the next GREAT QB. Save this post. It will become apparent late in the season when he gets his shot. The next "Dan the Man".

Don't forget about Buffalo, the pain in the asterisk of the AFC East for years now.
Seriously though, do either of these two listen to themselves? New England is the way to the Super Bowl in the AFC not NY or Miami.

I love it. No one wants to give Miami props for winning. The "weak schedule" argument makes me laugh because it is being said by the people who made up half of that schedule. We went into NE and slapped them all over the field and then went into NY and crushed them for the division win. Is that the easy schedule you mean? Or was it beating playoff team San Diego? PLEASE! it is the NFL there is no "easy" schedule. I love how you teams are "so great" and there is all this justification for not making the playoffs despite how "awesome you are" but there is no repsect for a team that just flat out beat you for the division. Like I said your best argument about a weak schedule as a Patsie fan or Jest fan is to admit that weak schedule is you.

AFC East still has to go through Miami. By the way the greatest show on earth has moved from St. Louis to Miami, on the ground. I don't see many teams being able to stop the wilcat this year with the addition of PW.

You go Rex! Being a ravens fan for years, we watch rex back up what he says. The dolphins have one good season and already they are talking smack. I think Channing should watch what he says, trade Joey, the nfl joke, Porter for a new friend, and watch some film himself, of rex destroying offenses.

I'v been a fins fan for 23 years and i must admit that schedule they had last year was REAL easy. FINS win anywhere from 6, 7 or 8 games this year. Too many question marks...1st Pats. Fins/Buffalo tie with sim Win record. jets last.
