Shutdown Corner - NFL

That's the promise he's making, anyway. Chad talked to Mark Curnutte at Cincinnati.com yesterday, and babbled somewhat interestingly about this off-season and the upcoming season. Among the quotes:

"I said everything I needed to say. I meant all of it. I know it didn't sit well with some of the fans. They saw me (upset). They saw the media play it in their own light."

"I hope the fans understand it's a business. I love them to death. Some of the things I've done for them throughout the years, everything I do is for them. I do apologize. I'm back. I'm going to give a double-dose of Chad."

"I am sorry. I apologize to those I upset."

"You're going to see the same player - the laughter, the celebrations; I'm still going to get fined and still going to have Cincinnati on the edge of its seat wondering what I'm going to do next - but I am going to mature in some way, I just don't know how it will be."

As always, it's a mixed bag from Chad, but it sounds like he at least wants to stop being a douchenozzle. That's a step in the right direction.

But I still maintain, as I have along, that Chad just talks and doesn't give any thought to what he's actually saying. First, he says he meant everything he said this off-season and and made it clear that he's not taking any of it back. But then he apologized for it. Whatever.

And then -- and this is my favorite part -- he announced his plans to mature. Can you do that? Can you make plans to mature? Is there some kind of clinic you can visit, or a maturation pill you can take?

I think that one just has to happen on its own. And if Chad isn't catching a number of balls that he deems appropriate and the Bengals lose a few in a row, we'll see how closely he sticks to that plan.

If you want to make things right, Chad, just take the field and perform. If you're not screaming at your quarterback, or (allegedly) trying to fight your head coach at halftime, and you go out and put up the numbers you're capable of, then you can be taken off the d-bag list. I hope that happens. Until it does, however, talk -- especially yours -- is cheap.

Gracias, Pro Football Talk.

How do you mean everything you said and apologize? The fans don't understand it is a business. Fans are fans regardless and love their team. I am tired of players going on like this (ie Larry Johnson and the Chiefs) and expecting the fans to just accept it. It is killing the NFL and is leading to a strike.
Football is a game, not a business. That is why the NFL will never have the following college football has.

Chad is one of the few players left in the NFL that looks like he's having fun and not reporting to work. Wouldn't you be bored out of your mind if your quarterback avoided your colossal frame and continually targetted your teammate who holds half of the skills you possess? And why do a receiver's comments have to be taken so seriously. I find ocho cinco to be one of the most entertaining players in football. Why rip on him because he shows signs of having an actual personality. "Are you not entertained?"

I'm going out to buy his jersey right now! Chad Johnson is the man! You can't say that the man doesn't play hard. His celebrations are good for the game. I don't care what anyone says.

Chad Johnson is a great receiver!!! He has always produced on the field. Why the sportsmedia and even some fans take him seriously is beyond me. Have a great season Chad and if the Bengals have any sign of a defense, they may even make the playoffs?

just the quote that he made saying that the fans are going to see a more mature chad johnson, followed up with saying that he's really not going to change and still get fined etc. etc., shows that he's still a complete [profane]ehead. he's as talented as they come but why try to sell the fans on something that he knows he can't be, mature. if he can stay on the field and make plays, great! who cares how socially retarded he is. but if he puts his team in a crap position by getting suspended or arrested, then he sucks.

this guy is indeed the real deal. say what you want about the man's immaturity or antics but he catches the balls that T.O. drops, he's not afraid of contact like T.O., and he hangs himself out to dry for his team. This a Cleveland Browns fan speaking, so you know I am not partial. Call him what you want, just don't call him the NFL's puppet like some of these stars today. Ocho Cinco wants more $, who can blame him when he plays for a hopeless team like the Bengals, who have at best shown signs of improvement and then right back to the bottom in the last 5 years. Their peak was like 3-4 years ago.

number 2, your right.... except for Browns fans, Greenbay fans and I guess KC fans.
Chad Johnson is a douche, and will never not be a douche. CJ, forever, and ever, a douche he shall remain.
Not that he is as bad, but certainly comparable to Vick in the aspect of having a whole lot of talent and having the wrong attitude/taking it for granted. He could be not only one of the best, but certainly a Hall of Famer.... if he just wasnt such a douche.

what a joke, where would he be without football? He would be in prison. Respect the game like the true greats( Rice, Barry Sanders, Montana, Young, Marino,) They didn't have to draw attention to themselves. They did it by their play on the field. Have fun goin to Cleveland again and getting knocked out! Bengals will always be the BANGALS.

no reason to celebrate a TD when your team has had one winning season in 15 years! Get a clue and learn the game, respect the game. When Chad is long gone and laying six feet under this game will still be playing. No one man is bigger than the gamd just ask Maurice Clarett about that one

Chad Johnson is a d-bag. He is a good reciever. If he ever realizes his success comes not just from his own effort, but the other ten guys he's on the field with, he may be a great reciever. Until then, he belongs on the Worlds Biggest D-Bag List, somewhere between Barry Bonds and Latree Spreewell. D-Bags 4 Life.

blaw...post #12.....how many Super Bowls have the Browns BEEN too? Which team has been to the playoffs most recently Bengals or Browns ? And how dare you say that without football Chad would be in jail....are you a racist and saying that because He's black....or simply because He's a Bengal and you're using guilt by association? Don't cry too hard when the Bengals revamped defense, opens up a big ole can O' Whup *ss on your Browns.

Except you probably got or are gonna get fired because of it. He plays for a team that cant compete these days and hates it, thats what makes him good at what he does. He just wants his team to be better, im not saying he knows how to go about but hey.

Maybe Chad Johnson should take lessons from Marvin Harrison about how to mature. Just look what it's done for Reggie Wayne. Harrison = future Hall of Famer, Wayne = future Hall of Famer, Johnson = talented receiver whose ego prevented greatness. Just play football and forget the dramatics and things just might look up in Cincy.

OK. I cannot believe the low level of professional writing in these sports columns. First, I corrected a reporter who claimed that the University of Louisville had a non-conference game vs. Syracuse University last year (which it lost, go 'Cuse) when we all know that UL has been in the Big East alongside SU for 3 years now. Now, I have to read a "professional" article that uses words such as "douchnozzle" and "d-bag." I'm a recent college grad (22), so it isn't like these words are heinous to hear or anything. However, when I'm reading a professionally written article, the least I should be able to expect is one of higher quality and integrity than a C average high-schooler could produce in the school paper.
