But have you seen the NFL draft ... on WEED?

Pro Football Weekly had some news yesterday as it relates to potential NFL first-round draft picks Aqib Talib, Mario Manningham, and sweet, sweet cheeba.

Manningham went through the combine and denied to everyone that he ever used marijuana, and then later sent a letter out to teams apologizing for "not being straightforward" with them (that's code for fibbing).

Talib, on the other hand, was honest about his failed marijuana tests in college, all three of them, and even, according to PFW, "dismissed the first positive test because he said he had told Kansas head coach Mark Mangino that he was going to test positive."

I love the idea that you can get away with something, as long as you tell the authorities that you're going to do it first. "Yeah, I was arrested for murdering a police horse, but it's no big deal because I told the cop I was going to do it first."

The effect of the buddha on their draft status? It varies. From the PFW article:

The way we hear it, Manningham, despite handling the situation poorly at the Combine with little guidance, is viewed as less of a character risk than Talib, who has been removed from more draft boards than Manningham, based on conversations PFW has had with nine NFL teams.

“There is no way I’d touch (Talib),” one team told PFW. “He’s gotten into a lot of trouble, and he still does not get it.”

“He’s got a laundry list of issues,” another team executive said of Talib's off-the-field behavior. “He’s not a one-time offender. Give a guy like him money, and it never gets better. It only gets worse.”

I don't know. If we're just talking about marijuana here, let's calm down, fella. I don't want to share too much personal information, but there's a guy walking around town who bears a striking resemblance to me who would've tested positive for marijuana once or twice in college.

The Patriots were thought to be a candidate to draft Talib at #7 overall. If it doesn't happen there, it looks like he could be in for a bit of a Quinn-slide.

do i sense another ricky williams scenario? Although Manningham is nowhere near being the talent that Ricky was. Talib on the other hand is a pretty good DB, but he better get his act together.

I quit smoking over a year ago, but let me just say that the quality of doja and hash brick pictured there would have given me a semi back in the day.

Damn! I too quit smoking a few years back...but that icky, sticky, green above in that picture makes my mouth water!! Fire in the hole!! The NFL is so hipocritical on weed because the NFL are the biggest drug dealers in sports!! The NFL lets franchises give their players hardcore prescription drugs, like vicodin, percoset, oxycontin, oxycodone, etc... I had a good friend of mine play major D-1 college ball and suffered a career ending shoulder injury his soph year. Now this was college mind you and he said that he could get what ever he wanted for pain from the University docs. But the minute his scholarship was up, he was cut off! So he started smoking weed for the pain he was still dealing with a year after his scholarship was done. And now he's so pissed because he said that smoking pot was just as good for the pain. And when he thinks of all the horrible s h i t he put into his body, he cringes and doesn't even want to think of how many years of taking hardcore prescription drugs took off his life. So imagine what NFL players take?? The NFL is full of s hi t because pot will always be the incorrect way with dealing with pain. But lets ruin the lifes(Walter Payton's Family) of NFL players and their families for the sake of the game and TV ratings!!

Talib failed three tests and Mangino didn't kick him off the team, and Mangino gets Coach Of The Year?? Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer suspended his best tailback Brandon Ore for the first quarter of the Orange Bowl for missing a team meeting and later kicks him off the team for unspecified reasons. Mangino should call Beamer and tell him how it got away with it!

Hey, it's just a practical thing. It isn't about weed being right or wrong or good or bad. It's about it being *illegal*, dudes. It's about Commish Gooden busting people off the field for breaking the law, just about any law.
The NFL doesn't make the laws, they just want the players to obey them. I'm not about to argue that this is a bad thing. Like it or not, the players *are* role models.
So, someone who either is too dumb to figure this out, or too arrogant and goes on smoking pot *anyway* is not a very good investment for a 1st round pick. The guy with the most phenomenal talent is useless if he's suspended.
