Shutdown Corner - NFL

They brought to mind greats like Lee Roy Selmon (who was given a place in the team's Ring of Honor today), Doug Williams, Ricky Bell and John McKay. They also brought back memories of 26 straight losses to begin the franchise's history and Steve Spurrier, starting quarterback. But the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, looking for their first win since Nov. 30 of last year, put on their old "creamsicle" jerseys and took on the Green Bay Packers at Raymond James Stadium. The Bucs had to play catch-up multiple times, erasing Packers leads, but they did that. They also picked off three Aaron Rodgers(notes) passes and sacked Rodgers six times. Rodgers' final pick was returned by safety Tanard Jackson(notes) for a 35-yard touchdown that put the game out of reach at a 38-28 final.

On offense, rookie quarterback Josh Freeman(notes) looked solid in his first NFL start, showing the advantage of his size and mobility when protections broke down and a nice feel for the pocket when he was able. The Packers were up, 28-17, at one point in the fourth quarter before Freeman threw touchdown passes to Kellen Winslow(notes) and Sammie Stroughter(notes). Freeman completed 14 passes in 31 attempts for 205 yards, three touchdowns and an interception -- not earth-shattering numbers, but great news for a team that's been struggling to get anything going on either side of the ball all season. There are still major problems on defense; Tampa Bay's frequent man coverage and single-safety looks leave it open to more big plays than just about any defense in the game, even though Ronde Barber(notes) played as if he'd found a time machine. But this was a big deal overall, especially for first-year head coach Raheem Morris, who picked up his first win.

Our only fear is that the Bucs will tie this win, and the totemic value of those jerseys together, and we'll see them again. Back to the pewter, guys!

Packer backers got nothing now. I heard them make excuse after excuse for their team and attempted time after time to argue that they're good and playoff worthy. Well, there's no excuse for this loss Packer fans, only reasons. Number 1 reason being the Packers are just not that good. Their okay at best, but definitely not worthy of a playoff spot. Should be fun to see Packer fans try and defend their team now.

I like how this article completely ignores the epic meltdown by the Packers and the fact that this all but solidifies Ted Thompson's status as an assclown for the ages.

I love those creamsicle jerseys. They sure beat some of the AFL Legacy jerseys that have been worn this year.

As pass happy mike handed the game over to Tampa Bay, we all said that the words "clean up" would be in his losing press conference...and sure enough, they were in there.
Mike Tampa bay gives up 170 yds a game on the ground and you refused to use this information to win the ball game. What did you do all weak? Run the fricking ball you idiot. One drive you used the run consistantly to set up a big pass and the rest of the game...it's like you forgot all about that drive. Your an idiot, out you go, we don't need a talented team to look this bad because of you

    week.
Tampa's secondary was in nickle all day and grant and ahman green not to mention the offensive line were all itching to put a 350 rushing hurt on these guys and you wouldn't let them. Mike you need to go bye bye because you just don't get it. Your idiot play calling also gets Tauscher hurt again, nice. Your simply the biggest detriment to this team. You don't put the players in the best position to succeed. Cowher anyone....please!!!

I have nothing against the Packers, but they are a bunch of cry babies. They think they are the best team in the NFL. I think it's funny that they don't have Brett Favre. But if they had GM that cared about the team and not just his paycheck. Then Brett would still be with them winning games. I hope they get a new GM that wants to win and not just throw the money away. I live in Wisconsin and work with alot of Packer fans and they come to work every monday after a game and walk around and cry when they can get by with it. CRY BABIES CRY!!!!!!!

The GB Packers' problems begin and end with the offensive line. If they can get that fixed, they'll be ok.

As a proud owner of one share, I can't defend the team. The change to 3-4 defense has taken our best defensive player and turned him into "lost in space". Clearly our coaching staff is not preparing our team to win and our gm is not providing the needed talent to get the job done. We have gifted playmakers not being able to use their talents and it is time for a change. With the frolick defense it is clear Capers is not the one. Murphy need to take action.

I love the jersey and Bucco Bruce. I still have a 1981 Rawlings Doug Williams jersey (originally from 1981, not these new throwbacks that are out). I would like to see them break these out once a year, they bring back both the good and bad memories, all in the name of nostalgia. Freeman looked good for his first game, he kept his cool, and made some mistakes, but none that cost them the game.
P.S. Packers are 1-7 in Raymond James Stadium, and that includes Brett Favres record of 1-5 (Rodgers now 0-2). GO BUCS!

I've been a Bucs fan since 76. I loved them thru the losing streak. I loved them thru ALL the losing seasons. I loved them when they ,almost but not quite ,made it thru to the Super Bowl. I openly wept when they made it to the Super Bowl and won it all. But I tell ya... When I saw them wearing the old creamsicle uniforms... I was craving for an ice cream truck to come down the street with the music just a blearing. I got hungry for an orange creamsicle. Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!

the creamsicles are infinitely better than the boring uniforms the Bucs currently wear... horrible 90s fashion rivaled only by the Panthers, Jaguars and Broncos.... ewww... hopefully the Bucs bring these back full-time

I think that Green Bay & Chicago will not be playoff bound. The NFC East & South are likely to get the wildcards because their #2 & #3 teams play better football than the NFC North or West.
The Green Bay Packers need to draft offensive lineman in 2010. I think they also need to switch back to the 4-3 at some point. The 3-4 isn't working as well on defense.
If the Packers don't have another winning season by 2010, I think both Ted Thompson & Mike McCarthy will be out of Green Bay. Then, it's only a matter of time before the Packers become the current Buccaneers and have to rebuild again.
I understand the losses to Minnesota & Cincinnati, but they really dug themselves a hole by losing to Tampa Bay. My only hope is that Green Bay wins more than 6 games. However, now I'm not so sure...
