Shutdown Corner - NFL

In discussing Brett Favre's retirement speech, I did note that it was a blubberfest, but it never crossed my mind to criticize the guy for it. I only thought of the words of The Big Lebowski. "Are you surprised at my tears, sir? Strong men also cry ... strong men ... also cry."

Especially in sports. It's not like Warren Schmidt retiring from the Woodmen of the World insurance company in Omaha (though that has its own challenges).

Here's the difference, here's what Laura Ingraham didn't get, and here's why it's going to lead to tears: You do not become a great athlete without a strong passion for what you're doing. If you don't love to play, and if you don't love and trust your teammates, and you're not willing to sacrifice your body to make a play for your team ... you're not going to be great, and you're never going to be a part of a great team. Favre was great, in part because he did all those things.

Having teammates is not like having coworkers. You develop a bond with teammates that goes beyond what you develop with Yvette, the middle-aged woman in human resources with the Garfield calendar.

In football, you have to trust the people you work with. And it's not the kind of trust where you're hoping they'll get the Power Point presentation done on time. You have to trust that a guy will break his back in order to protect you. It's 11 men vs. 11 men, all trying to do great bodily harm to one another. That tends to bring a group of 11 people together.

Brett Favre routinely picked Donald Driver up over his shoulders after touchdowns. Favre's passionate nature and the bond they had to develop led to that sort of thing. When's the last time you threw Yvette from Human Resources over your shoulders?

And he's letting go of all that. All the effort and passion and sacrifice he put into his job, all the bonds he had with his teammates, all the camaraderie he established with his boys ... that's worth shedding a few tears for, yes?

Anyway, I don't think any of this factored into her thinking when Laura Ingraham went off on Brett Favre. She just saw a man crying, which contradicted her vision of the ideal man, which goes something like, "Man strong, man don't cry, man go kill bear, bring home for dinner for family, wife cook, family eat, man ravage wife with brute force, so wife make more babies with her wide childbearing hips."

Here's what she said:

"All these years, and I didn't know there was a woman quarterback in the NFL.

"Brett Favre ... we're watching this in the studio, obviously retiring from the NFL, great quarterback, handsome 38-year-old man, he gets up there and he does this press conference that was frankly one of the most embarrassing things I have ever seen."

"That's a great message for young boys. 'Get up there and act like a girl and start blubbering like a baby."

Then, in her best impersonation of a crying toddler with its favorite toy taken away, she wah-wah-wah's while uttering in a mocking tone, "It's about me, it was never about me, but it is about me, bla, bla, bla" before returning to her regular voice and stating, "I could not believe what I was seeing."
My initial reaction is to become angry with women, and say, "One minute, you want us to be sensitive and in touch with our feelings, and the next, you're calling us women if we cry. Not fair, ladies. Please make up your mind ... because the next time an ex-boyfriend of yours calls you a naughty word, I won't know if you'll want me to defend your honor and beat him to death with a tire iron, or if you'll want me to go home and have a good cry with you."

Upon further review, however, I think the fact that Miss Ingraham works at FOX News disqualifies her from being a normal woman. I assume, like everyone else at FOX News, Miss Ingraham believes that the ideal man is a cross between John Wayne and Ronald Reagan, except not an actor, because too many actors are gay, so I'm not going to hold that against an entire gender.

I'm still going to cry when I feel like it, and if you don't like that, I'll just shut down emotionally until your self-esteem plummets into the gutter because I don't every tell you that you're pretty anymore.

I have never heard such a display of disrespect. She has obviously never put her heart into anything in her life like Brett Farve did. That's obvious becuase she couldn't possibly have one.

"She obviously never put her heart into anything in her life like Brett Farve did" LOSER How many Brett Farve posters do you have? We all have aright to criticize Brett Farve, he is a public figure and honestly should be able to have better control of himself than he displayed. Isn't he always perfectly poised under pressure? B.S. he's a sissy and he provd it to the world, now he can enjoy his prescription drugs in peace.

#2 is an idiot. What that woman said is one of the most disrespectful things I have ever heard said of anyone, let alone one of the greatest players to ever grace the sport of football. Brett Favre played this game for nearly 2 decades, its what he does, it has been his life for so long and he is giving all this up. Everything MJD said was completely right, anyone who has done that for so long and had such a passion for the game and a love for his team would realize how hard that would be to give all that up and they would probably cry too.

Just imagine how much we could all save on our heating bills if we had Coulter, Hannity, Ingraham, Limbaugh, & O'Reilly as an energy resource. That's a lot of hot air.

Hey, #6, what planet are you from? Brett and the Pack won the 1997 Super Bowl. Laura Ingraham is like a rabid dog, always foaming at the mouth. Perhaps she should be put down.

I agree with the other comments. Does this woman feel that by making a mockery of Brett, she can feel better about herself?

Agreed. # 2 is a complete idiot. My thoughts exactly!!! I am a woman, a wife, a mother, a teacher and a Green Bay Packer fan. I don't think there is anything more encouraging than a role model that can positively express their emotions...especially a big strong athlete. It's not about self control. It's about being human and the ability to show weaknesses. There is no shame in that. Unfortunately there is shame in making an a** out of yourself for having no compassion. Same goes for you #6.

Well said #15. I would hold Brett Favre up as a great example to anyone. He had personal problems. He faced them and he held himself accountable. His family, like all families, faced illness and tragedy. He handled it to the best of his ability and he had to do that with the media watching every move he made. He put everything he had into his job. He has grown as an individual, as a husband and as a father. He was passionate about the game of football and he let people know that. He wasn't afraid to let his feelings show. And Laura Ingraham mocks him? It would probably be in her best interest to never show her face in Green Bay. I don't think she'd be too popular there now. Also, thanks for the comment MJD. For once I agree with you.

It's public commentaries like these where you really see the idiots in society!!!!!!!! Shame on all of you for putting down this human being who for 17 years did a job and did it well !!! I admire him and his wife and family for all they have gone through and in the publics srutinizing eyes as well. As for the person who took a shot at his wife, you will have to answer for that someday!! maybe you should keep your sharpened claws for tearing apart the scum of america who live off welfare and never contribute to society!!!
God Bless you Brett Farve and thanks for 17 years of great memories!!!!!!!!

Brett Favre left the game the way he played it--with great passion and he should not be criticized for doing his job with such passion. That is what made him great, and great fun to watch. Football will never be quite as fun to watch again with him!

Hey #6, what did Deanna Favre ever do to you? She's a classy lady and her husband is a classy guy. He did a lot for the Packers. His love for the game made him fun to watch. Packer fans will always love him for the joy he brought to the game. So what if he didn't win 4 Superbowls. He's still a great player. He and Deanna have done a lot to help those in need through their foundations.

I am conservative man and I will admit when I watched Brett cry in his conference, I cried a little too. A hero of mine since I was old enough to understand football just retired, it felt like my best friend just moved away. I will miss Brett because he was not only one of the greatest QBs ever to touch a football but he was also one of the most classy men even to play any sport ever. Brett is a fantastic man and, if given the option, I would vote him Pres instead of anyone running now.

You people trashing Brett for his "blubbering" are all morons. If you go back and watch videos of basically all of the greats for this era (Marino, Elway, Young, and Aikman) you will see some pretty tough guys crying. The fact that all of these men were so passionate about what they were doing deserves nothing less than our utmost respect.
And as for this Laura Ingraham, I can probably speak for 80% of the nation when I say "who the hell are you?" Prior to reading this article I had never even heard of her. That goes to show how valuable her "professional opinion" is to me. I'm guessing she's got some crappy writers trying to pull off a publicity stunt to bump up her ratings... unfortunately for her, she picked the wrong topic to do so. Expect some major backlash.
If it seems a little unclear what I am trying to say here, go back and read #8. He sums it up pretty well.
