On Wednesday, there were reports that the 0-6 Miami Dolphins had been in touch with Bill Cowher regarding their upcoming coaching vacancy after the inevitable firing of Tony Sparano sometime over the next few months.
Cowher had remained quiet on the subject until Sunday morning, when he addressed the talk on the CBS pregame show. From Sun-Sentinel.com:
"I have not been contacted directly or indirectly by any football team, or any organization. It's all speculation and it's unfortunate because it effects the lives of many people who are in the profession." [...]
"I'm here to say to you today, I do not plan on coaching next year. I love where I work, and more importantly I enjoy the people I work with [at CBS]," Cowher said of his CBS crew. "So I can put all this speculation to rest, and if I have to repeat this in December I will."
That's expertly worded by Cowher. It sounds strong and unequivocating, but if you look closely, there's some wiggle room for The Chin. He doesn't plan to coach, just like I don't plan to buy a bunch of Halloween candy for the adorable children in their costumes, and then eat most of it myself. There's room for him to change his mind later and rethink his plan when someone offers him about $9 million a year.
About having no contact with the Dolphins, officially or otherwise, I'm not saying that I don't believe Bill Cowher, but I am saying that words came out of his mouth that I don't believe are true. Like he said, these rumors do impact peoples' lives, so if an innocent little fib keeps him from being seen as the guy messing with Tony Sparano's job, who does it hurt?
