Shutdown Corner - NFL

I realize that the organization's not thrilled with him, but I didn't know things were this bad between Steve Smith and the Panthers. The following slightly shocking revelation comes from Hashmarks:

There have been rumblings out of Panthers camp that club officials are fed up with Smith's actions (not just the latest incident) and are at least considering the idea of dealing him to another team.

The idea of trading one of the best receivers in football seems far-fetched, but Smith has become a divisive force on the team. One Panthers source said that several defensive backs were walking around after the recent incident saying that if management didn't discipline Smith, they would.

First, let's take it easy there, tough guy. If a Panthers defensive back was going to "discipline" Smith, he'd have to catch him first. Considering that the Panthers gave up a 62.8% completion rate last year, I don't know if they're in a position to claim that they're going to catch and discipline anybody.

Back to the topic at hand, though. I have no idea what other of Smith's "actions" the Panthers find objectionable. I know he's a guy who likes to talk, and obviously, he's got a bit of a temper, but I didn't know that this was an ongoing problem. As far as I knew, Smith was a good, albeit talkative, soldier.

And since I don't know these things, maybe I'm not the right guy to be giving advice to the Panthers, but my philosophy is this: Teams are better off with great players than they are without them, and Steve Smith is a great player. If he rates a 10 on the scale of importance to the Panthers offense, Jake Delhomme's a 7.5, and everyone else is about a 2.

So if the decision was mine to make, Smith would have to be one seriously messed up attitude before I'd consider parting ways with him. If he ran around training camp every day like Alex from A Clockwork Orange, I'd consider trading him. Anything short of that, though, and he'd probably be safe.

No time for the old in-out, love. I've just come to read the meter.
Smith is apparently ready for a bit of the ultraviolence

The Panthers would be making the biggest blunder of the decade to trade this guy.

hey, if the panthers trade him now, they will get little to nothing in return....his production will increase once a legit QB gets him the ball, I'm a giants fan and i would love him on my team, put him opposite Burress and they will do major damage.

The Giants went on their Super Bowl run once "me first" Jeremy Shockey went out and trouble maker Tiki Barber retired. People thought the G-Men couldn't win with out one or both of them.
Maybe trading SS is the thing to do!

John M, the Giants have a $hitload more talent around the ball than the Panthers do. Without Tiki and Shockey the still had Toomer, Burress, plus Jacobs, Bradshaw, and Boss did a lot higher than expectations. That and i'd definately take Manning over Delhomme. If i were the Panthers, i'd keep him. Though i would love to see him come to my Jets, and it would be pretty interesting to see him go to the Chargers and give them someone other than LT and Gates.

Didn't the Panthers also go on a Superbowel run with Steve Smith? Only difference is that they lost, but still made it there.

Smith, Favre and Peterson in Minnesota would be literally unfair. It'd be like the greatest show on Turf in St. Louis only with a great defense!

the panters are sorry anyway. steve smith is about winning. so yes trade steve smith and you will see his numbers go up. not only that the only team that has the money for steve smith is on the east coast. that team is. not going to say, but put him on the other side with randy moss and tom brady. the best move ever

Hey gibbz111 you got a great idea there with Lito and a draft pick to Philly for Smith, but I think a 1st rounder might be just a little too high, I think a 2nd rounder at most. McNabb couldn't possibly be much happier if that were to go down. However they had a playmaking WR with an attitude once before(T.O.) and that didn't work out so well. I don't know if they would be willing to take that risk again, sounds good though :)

I would like to see the 49ers trade for him and send Alex Smith to the panthers for maybe a future draft pick, and i think he would be a upgrade for the 49ers offense, and surely with Martz and the helm of the offense he would be a the top of his game, and that would be a big boost for that team! Go 49!!!!!!!!!

First off, football is a pure emotional contact sport. Fights WILL happen. They happened when I was in high school and in college. Can you imagine in the pros, where the pressure to excel is 10X greater?
Fights happen all the time in the NFL, as you can read from Jason Cole's story, and many times the press doesn't hear about it. The Panthers run a media friendly training camp, so that's how this has become so publicized. Add to that Smith's top tier status and it makes for a media fire.
Yes, it was wrong. It's honestly remeniscient of Carmello's sucker punch. BUT after the first two games of the season for the Panthers, everyone will see just how important Steve Smith is to this offense. For starters, every reciever they have can be single covered.
