Shutdown Corner - NFL

I mentioned it in passing yesterday, but I'm feeling more and more like it warrants its own post. I guess that's because it looks today like the Lions are actually serious about this "let's just take whoever's cheaper" business.

The Lions have been negotiating with both Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry and Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford. Tom Kowalski of mlive.com reports that they've already got a deal with Curry in the bag, but have yet to reach an agreement with Stafford.

He says it's not just a negotiatic tactic, either. The Lions have identified a player they want, but might not take him, because the other guy is giving them a discount. Writes Kowalski:

The Lions already have come to terms on a deal with Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry, but the Lions are waiting to see if their No. 1 target -- Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford -- will agree to a contract prior the start of the draft at 4 p.m. Saturday.

According to a league source, the Lions expect Stafford's agent, Tom Condon, to see if he can get a better deal with another team a slot or two lower than the Lions. Remember, last year Condon got a better contract for quarterback Matt Ryan ($34.75 million guaranteed), who was the third overall pick, than tackle Jake Long received as the first pick ($30 million guaranteed).

Stafford's negotiating to see if he can get a better deal with another team? Wait a second. Teams still draft players, right? As opposed to players drafting teams? That's still how it works, yes?

I don't know. I guess that's irrelevant. What I want to focus on is that the Lions might be settling for a player they don't want as badly as they want another player, because that first player comes a little cheaper.

That's crazy. That's foolish. That's the stuff 0-16 is made of. That is, dare I say, Millen-esque.

Don't get me wrong. I do understand the importance of frugality in the NFL. There's a salary cap, you've gotta squeeze everyone under it, you pinch pennies where you can ... I get it. Managing money is key.

But you just went 0-16, gentlemen. That's a pretty clear sign that the players you have are not very good at playing football, and you need players who are better at playing football. You need to take the guy you think is best. You take the guy who you think helps the Detroit Lions the most.

You are not the New England Patriots. You do not have a roster with just a couple of holes to be plugged, here and there. Your roster is a hole.

This isn't about my opinions on Curry, Stafford, or Jason Smith. I don't care who they like best. My opinion doesn't matter. Take Greg Paulus if you think he's the best option; I don't care. I won't criticize any choice, so long as it's made for the right reasons. If they think Curry gets them to respectability faster, fine, take Curry. If they think Stafford gets them to respectability faster, then take Stafford.

Whoever they take is going to be overpaid. That's just the way it works in the NFL today.

But you've still got to take the best player. And do you know why, Lions? It's because you suck, and you have to get better. If you don't get better, you will continue to suck. Do you like sucking? Do you like fans with paper bags over their heads? Do you like making the Detroit auto industry look well-run and innovative by comparison?

Take the best player. Make a football decision here. Do not let the embarrassment continue.

Yes this whole contract business is nonsense. Just give the guy his bonus and let's move on. If they wanted Curry, they would have already taken him.
For any reasonable GM/owner, this would not be an issue. You have the #1 pick, TAKE THE GUY YOU WANT!

Curry is the better deal out of the two.....if the Lions don't take Curry....he will go 2 or 3......if the Lions don't take Stafford....he drops much futher down....

Phil, a run-stopping linebacker at #1 is not a good value. You can get Laurinitis at #33 and he'll do just as well. There will not be a quarterback of Stafford's ability at #33 (or even at #20).
Overpaid linebacker who makes maybe 10-15 plays a game or an overpaid QB who touches the ball for EVERY OFFENSIVE SNAP? This is a no-brainer folks...

The Lions are what they are, and always will be. They have had a chance to bring in much better management but balk every time. They will never get better until this happens.

this makes no sense. if you think the lions' motivation is, or should be, to "end the embarrassment," i'd say curry's clearly the better choice. not of a lot of rookie qbs are successful right away. the lions know that, and they're not drafting him for this season. however, getting a ridiculously good middle linebacker in the starting lineup that couldn't stop the run if their lives depended on it makes them better right away.
so if the goal is to stop being an embarrassment as quickly as possible, they shouldn't even consider stafford regardless of his perceived long-term value. and if the goal is to truly take the "best player" to help turn the team's fortunes around in the long term, then stafford makes sense only insofar as he represents value relative the other options keeping the salary cap in mind. which one is it?

what another dumb article...Curry is the best player available, and Detroit needs help with DEFENSE, not as much on offense...if anything their biggest need is OL, not QB.

You are a joke. But then again you nothing about the Lions or what we have seen as fans.
Curry is the best and long term option for the Lions. Not Stafford. And if they can get a discount more power to them. A strong defense can get you to and win a Superbowl (Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens, Tampa Bay Bucs). Who was more important in getting The Ravens to and winning a Superbowl, Ray Lewis or Trent Dilfer? Chicago Bears a few years back, Rex Grossman or Lance Briggs? Brad Johnson or Derrick Derrick Brooks. Look at Tennessee last year. Defense got them to the Play-offs. It sure wasn't Collins and now we have their defensive co-ordinator.
The fans want Curry and will not give Stafford a chance.

You know, it is actually painful - PAINFUL - to be a Lions fan. Everytime I hear about another boneheaded move the Lions are about to undertake, my stomach actually hurts. Why do I even bother liking this team?

What if they think Stafford is the best player, but still not worth what they'll have to pay him? We all know one player, no matter how good, is not going to turn this team around. But $35mil (if he gets that) could limit what else they need to do.

You guys just don't get it. The Lions can get a stud linebacker for like $1-2 mil a year with their #20 or #33 picks. This draft is full of them! Laurinitis, Cushing, Matthews, Maualuga, Barwin, Sintim can all be just as good as Curry if not BETTER. Why pay Curry $10 mil a YEAR?
The Lions NEED a QB. Culpepper is not the answer in the short or long term. He can't even stay healthy. Stafford may not be Matt Ryan, but he's at least as good as Flacco. Wouldn't you rather have Joe Flacco than a linebacker?
I think it'd be better for them to take a left tackle over Curry.

Its not about saving a couple bucks, its about signability, detroit just doesnt want a holdout that does nobody anygood! if staffords agent is going to pull that s-it then sign curry. i agree with managment!

If the lions draft stafford he will be another david carr, spending half of the game on his back.
The lions have said all along that they would be happy with Jason Smith, Aaron curry or Matt Stafford, and that signability is a big issue. It is amazing that they have created leverage among these players and are going to get the best deal out of it when at 0-16 they shouldn't have any leverage at all.
Why should a team in a struggling city economically go throwing around money like crazy on just one player. It sets a good example for the city, showing that you can save money and still get what you need. They also can use the money they save to go out and sign a free-agent that could be useful in the next few off seasons. MJD, you obviously don't know crap about detroit.

They can sign Stafford, they just need to give him what he wants. He's probably not asking for much more than what Matt Ryan got last year. If they expect to pay less than that then they are idiots. To expect to pay him less than a linebacker is also stupid, as QBS should always make more.

There are 6 linebackers in this draft that are better linebackers than Stafford is at QB. So they can pick one of them up any time. Stafford is a huge risk to me at No.1. Not the best of numbers and did poorly in big games. What's he going to do that Joey Harrington and Charlie Batch haven't done with no line?
Sanchez scares me - a good QB who had mediocre stats even though surrounded by one of the most talented teams in college FB. So what do we do - do what Smooty say: Get the biggest, most talented fat boys you can find and build your lines. Pick up an excellent LB in the 2nd or 3rd round and a "nobody" QB who may turn out like Flacco and if not get your QB next year.

I disagree that it is Millen-esque to be cheap on the 1st round choice. It is Millen-esque to shower the kid with money, spend your time pumping the choice up to the media so they grade the draft well, and then try to find excuses for why, two years later, he can't play.

Who Cares? I feel your pain. We used to be good, but now can't do better than 8-8 with Mr. Snyder holding the puppet strings. It's all so stupid. Everyone respects the Rooneys and the Krafts and all they do is hire a good coach/GM with a good system that they stick with. They write the checks and sit back and enjoy the Championships. Whereas the Raiders, Cowboys, and Redskins do the opposite. And look what they're up to. Former SB Champs with proud traditions doing the dumb dumb year after year.
