Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry wants to be the first overall pick in the draft, so badly in fact, that he'll make himself available at AN UNBELIEVABLE PRICE!

Curry said yesterday that he'd take a smaller contract than the one received by last year's first overall pick, Jake Long of the Miami Dolphins. From The Huddle:

The Lions are negotiating with several players, including Curry, Georgia QB Matthew Stafford and Baylor OT Jason Smith, to become the first player selected. They want whomever is selected to sign a deal before the draft.

Asked on Sirius satellite radio if he would sign a deal worth less than the $30 million last year's top pick, Jake Long, got, Curry emphatically said yes.

"I'd be more than happy to accept that deal," Curry said.

You know what I'd do in that situation? Aaron Curry's got a great product to sell ... himself. And he's got it available at a very reasonably price. You've got to take a deal that good to the informercial airways. He doesn't need an agent. He needs Billy Mays.

"Hi, BILLY MAYS HERE, for Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry, the FAST and EASY way to get your franchise back on track! No more giving up 5.1 yards per carry! Just draft Aaron Curry, slide him into a Honolulu blue uniform, and you're ALL DONE! It's THAT EASY! He'll play sam, mike, will, ANYTHING you need, at just the announcement of his name! With a body that seems to be made of SPACE-AGE POLYMERS and thighs like TREES, Aaron Curry is SURE TO PLEASE! Call now, and you'll Aaron Curry in YOUR defense in a breeze, FOR UNDER 30 MILLION DOLLARS! And if you call RIGHT NOW, we'll throw in his proud, crying and overwhelmed mother on draft day, ABSOLUTELY FREE! AND THAT'S NOT ALL! Call in the next 10 minutes, AND FOR ABSOLUTELY FREE, WE'LL SEND YOU TWO DOZEN AWESOME AUGUERS! I've got a warehouse full of them because I grossly overestimated the number people in America who have A STRONG DESIRE TO AUG!"

I think it's unlikely that Billy Mays will be hired as an actual NFL agent, but I do wonder if Curry's announcement will have an impact on the Lions decision. I certainly hope not.

If Aaron Curry is the best player there who best suits their needs (and he just might be), that's fine. Pick Aaron Curry and be happy. But if you're the Detroit Lions and you just managed to go a year without winning a game, you have got to take the best player you can, regardless of cost.

The Lions need players. The Lions need talent. The Lions need someone who represents hope for the future. What they don't need is to be bargain shopping.

The NFL draft is turning into the MLB draft. Too many times the better draft picks get passed on in MLB due to their "signing" requirements. As a tiger fan, we got Andrew Miller because he wouldn't sign what the others wanted to pay him. Unfortunately the Tigers traded him. But to the Lions, the need the best value for the pick. We are the worst team in the league, it will take more than one player to turn it around. I like Stafford, but we need an OL to make sure he is not playing from his knees. But our D-fense was so bad last year we really need to stop people from running over us. So it really comes down to value. If you can save money over the others than you can try to spend wisely in free agency, for next year at least.
The biggest point is that the LIONS need to draft DEFENSE FIRST... How has our offensive 1st round picks turned out???

NFC North has decent RB's and decent defenses. You can get farther in that division faster by taking defense and stopping the run, than by improving the offense. Defense first, offense second.

Lions had 4 QB'S on disabled list last year. Why would you pay 70 million for a QB you can't protect. Move JIM Bacus (his name is Jeff but he blocks like MR.Magoo) to guard and get a real Left Tackle. Either as the 1st pick or the 20th pick. then it's "April in the D". defense, defense, defense, ect.

floridaguy's got a point - why try so hard to go #1 with the lions when you can get the same money at #3 with the chiefs, who will surely rebuild much faster?

I say defence is number 1 need for them this year, if they can keep the score of the other team low you give your offence a chance.Curry would give them a good piece to work around and develop a defence. If you don't think that will be the best thing to go defence then that means your an offence first person and you need too start at the offence line!!! It will not matter who your QB is sense a QB cant throw the ball from the turf. A QB wont last long in Detroit if he is GETTING HIT ON EVERY PLAY, it wont matter who's back there hes going to get hurt !!!!! The Lions should have played attention to that last year and want to in prove the life of the QB before they spend the money on the QB.

Defense wins championships, isn't that what we always hear? Isn't Shwartz a numbers/statistics guy? I believe the failure rate 4 1st round QBs is 87%, idk but this guy doen't say Peyton Manning 2 me, while AC screams Ray Lewis, I've heard him being compared 2 a Jr Seau type player. If that's indeed true it would b a steal 2 sign him instead. They keep talkin about face of the franchise, idk, I mean they've been in rebuild mode, & I believe Megatron may possibly b that face, idk but he's pretty good. And if you look at stats, which I'm told JS does, the #1 problem with the Lions right now is Defense, therefore 2 me that says imphasis should b there, statistically. With some decent OL, which besides TE & mayB a another solid WR, any1 should b able 2 throw passes 2 a 6'5" 240# freak od nature. If they look @ the stats, by college #'s, bowl's won, comp %, Pat White's the best Qb out there & you should easily b able 2 nab him 33rd, or mayb 65th. Get D, upgrade line, don't waste this pick on another Joey Harrington. Don't believe the hype, MS is that guy, take the rollback, draft AC!

Curry is saying he'd take that money, because he knows Detroit has already chosen Matt Stafford. It doesn't matter at all what Curry says, he's still not going in the top 3, maybe not even the top 5.

too bad noone is willing to trade up for the #1 pick. get a 3rd, and next years first, or an additional 2nd and 4th this year...moving down say, 10 spots.. they they can do soem REAL damange, and get a couple OL and a couple defensive playmakers.
    they ruin another QB instead..woot!

I think it's more the agent trying to get this deal done. Curry's remarks probably helped with that. I'm pretty sure you are dreaming if you think a #3 pick is going to get the same money as last year's #1 pick unless you are talking a Ray Lewis or LT type player and Curry is not either at this point. For the life of me with all the doubt surrounding Stafford(poor decision making, forcing throws, inconsistency) I can't understand why the Lions are considering him unless it was all a ploy to get Curry to agree to a contract ahead of time.
