Wake
Forest linebacker Aaron Curry wants to be the first overall pick in the draft,
so badly in fact, that he'll make himself available at AN UNBELIEVABLE PRICE!
Curry said yesterday that he'd take a smaller contract than the one received by last year's first overall pick, Jake Long of the Miami Dolphins. From The Huddle:
The Lions are negotiating with several players, including Curry, Georgia QB Matthew Stafford and Baylor OT Jason Smith, to become the first player selected. They want whomever is selected to sign a deal before the draft.
Asked on Sirius satellite radio if he would sign a deal worth less than the $30 million last year's top pick, Jake Long, got, Curry emphatically said yes.
"I'd be more than happy to accept that deal," Curry said.
You know what I'd do in that situation? Aaron Curry's got a great product to sell ... himself. And he's got it available at a very reasonably price. You've got to take a deal that good to the informercial airways. He doesn't need an agent. He needs Billy Mays.
"Hi, BILLY MAYS HERE, for Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry, the FAST and EASY way to get your franchise back on track! No more giving up 5.1 yards per carry! Just draft Aaron Curry, slide him into a Honolulu blue uniform, and you're ALL DONE! It's THAT EASY! He'll play sam, mike, will, ANYTHING you need, at just the announcement of his name! With a body that seems to be made of SPACE-AGE POLYMERS and thighs like TREES, Aaron Curry is SURE TO PLEASE! Call now, and you'll Aaron Curry in YOUR defense in a breeze, FOR UNDER 30 MILLION DOLLARS! And if you call RIGHT NOW, we'll throw in his proud, crying and overwhelmed mother on draft day, ABSOLUTELY FREE! AND THAT'S NOT ALL! Call in the next 10 minutes, AND FOR ABSOLUTELY FREE, WE'LL SEND YOU TWO DOZEN AWESOME AUGUERS! I've got a warehouse full of them because I grossly overestimated the number people in America who have A STRONG DESIRE TO AUG!"
I think it's unlikely that Billy Mays will be hired as an actual NFL agent, but I do wonder if Curry's announcement will have an impact on the Lions decision. I certainly hope not.
If Aaron Curry is the best player there who best suits their needs (and he just might be), that's fine. Pick Aaron Curry and be happy. But if you're the Detroit Lions and you just managed to go a year without winning a game, you have got to take the best player you can, regardless of cost.
The Lions need players. The Lions need talent. The Lions need someone who represents hope for the future. What they don't need is to be bargain shopping.
