Shutdown Corner - NFL

You shouldn't have to work today.

You shouldn't even have to get out of bed. This should be a day where you can sleep in, sleep off the effects of all the "soda" you drank yesterday, reflect on the Saints as the representation of the best in football and just keep reloading Shutdown Corner all day long.

Today should be a national holiday.

What else brings Americans together like the Super Bowl? One hundred million people all did the same thing yesterday. When does that ever happen? As a nation, what else do we universally agree on, quite like the fact that we should all sit down, eat ridiculous foods and watch a football game? We can barely get the same number of people to vote in a presidential election.

The way we come together for this thing is unbelievable, and that shouldn't go unrecognized. This is a shared experience that binds us as a nation. When we all agree that it's time to party, we should all also agree that it's worth a day of rest afterwards.

I don't even care what we call it. If the government is hesitant to create a new national holiday for the Super Bowl, pick some president or some other famous American, and name it after them. Call it Jimmy Carter Day, Denzel Washington Day, Sully Sullenberger Day, Philip Rivers(notes) Day or Joey Buttafuoco Day, for all I care. Just as long as it happens the Monday after the Super Bowl, and everyone gets that day off of work.

Of course, I'm not the first to advance this idea. SuperBowlMonday.com advocates pretty heavily for it, and they've got a petition you can sign, as well as addresses at which you can write your local Senators and Congressmen. Look into that.

We've already got the Indianapolis public school system arguing over what to do on the Monday after the Super Bowl. And anyone in New Orleans who makes it in to work on time tomorrow has let their city down. Let's just take all the uncertainty out of the equation and let people do what they want.

I think it makes a lot more sense, especially with the 2 weeks since the championship games, to play the Super Bowl on Saturday night. It would be a massive party and everybody has Sunday to recover before work Monday.

But us government employees already have the upcoming Friday and Monday off for a wonderful 4 day weekend. They would never give us another day in February.

Oh Get real. I watched the game and managed to get to work just fine this morning. Maybe if the NFL started the game at 4:00 on the east coast so that it ends at about 7:00 instead of 10 or 11 that would help.

Maybe you shouldn't have a job if you're too much of a vag to show up after the super bowl.

WTF if you can't control yourself enough to make it to work on Monday that's your damn problem. Only fix for those that are irresponsible is to move it to Saturday night. So shame on the people who can't control themselves and over indulge!!!!!

Give me a break. No way. All we need is another man made self serving holiday. Next will be Super Bowl greeting cards. It's just a game. If they are truly serious just piggyback it with the Presidents Day weekend. What's one more week of hype.

As someone said earlier... superbowlmonday.com needs to start petitioning the NFL to move their game to Saturday. That's absurd to make a holiday out of it. And responsible people like myself got up anyway and I didn't drink to much "Beer" last night!

Maybe for the city that hosts/wins the game. Other than that, get up and go to work.

MJD you don't have the IQ of the cumulative final score of the Super Bowl!! How about some consideration for the 300 million Americans that don't give a [profane] about football!?

Can you imagine our military personnel fighting for America's Freedom, they watch this SuperBowl around midnight or later and still have to perform their duties the following morning. I am currently stationed in Germany and game ended around four, in and out of sleep and have to work at 0700. YES, this should be a national holiday. Thank you.

instead of signing a petition to get a lousy holiday, how about we sign petitions (or better yet) raid our government to stop building this prison we call our country. Now everybody get back to work! slaves.

Wow, you people are ANGRY! Ha ha ha. I agree with MJD. The idea of Superbowl having a holiday is a fantastic idea. NOT because of food or drink hangover, or even how late the game runs. But because, like MJD said, what else but the Superbowl can bring millions of people together to celebrate a time-honored tradition? Isn't that the definition of a holiday anyway? People won't understand until they live in a city of a Superbowl winning team anyway. It's a big effing deal. Last night was a great night of celebrating for me. I would love to have been able to enjoy it past ten, but alas, I had to work at 5:00 a.m. I had to go to bed while my roommates partied the night away. What a drag.
