Shutdown Corner - NFL

Eight former AFL teams will wear 1960s throwback uniforms during "legacy games" in the 2009 season. Shutdown Corner takes a look back (or ahead, if you will) at those throwback jerseys in advance of the season. Today, we look at the 1965 Buffalo Bills.

These, like the Chargers AFL throwbacks, fall under the category of "Awesome, but also seen recently, so it's hard to get too excited." If I'm not mistaken, the Bills have been wearing these twice a year as their alternate jerseys for a few years now.

That said, though, now seems like the perfect time to talk about why the Bills should make these their permanent uniforms, as opposed to these hideous fabric monsters. You want a darker blue? Fine. I don't like it, but I understand. So switch to a darker blue. But do you need to add another shade of blue on top of that, and then to outline the numbers in gray? Why gray? What the hell does gray have to do with anything? And why do you need so much piping? Piping shouldn't be a noun, piping should only be a verb.

The Jack Kemp-era blues are the classier and cleaner uniforms, by far, and each time the Bills wear them, they serve as a reminder of the hideousness of the current uniforms.

They should make the change permanent. I'd also like them to go back to the serene, standing, grazing and zen-like buffalo as the team's logo, but that's probably asking a bit much. Everyone seems to want to have a more aggressive logo now, and that's fine, because I like the new guy, too. Not as much as I like the defiant "Yeah, I'm going to stand here and graze, and if you don't like it, why don't you stand right behind me" nature of the old guy, but that's alright.

I have a signed Photo from Billy Shaw that my brother bought for me as a memento. When My brother and I were like 8 years old we were up at Sweet Home High trying to kick field goals over the goal posts and some "old guy" was jogging around the track and comes over and starts holding the ball for us and giving us pointers. We didn't know it was Billy Shaw until we saw his picture in the paper that week in a news article. He was so unassuming and never even told us who he was! What a great guy!

gray is one of the 3 original colors of the bills (blue, gray & white) and the original color of the bills helmet, they wore blue jersey's with gray numbers, thats what gray has to do with anything... do some better research if you are going to comment on the history of the team.

Standing buffalo helmet with the new jersey... now that is a great combo.
I could live with standing buffalo helmet and just a darker blue version of the throwback jersey, but I really like their new jerseys. I never have and never will understand the current, more "aggressive" buffalo logo. It is anything but aggressive. It's cartoonish.

Does any team in the NFL wear all white anymore for their away jersey's ? All white with white helmets in the 1st 2 mos. of away games would be cool and look cool. Then throw back designed black jersey's and pants with the white helmet would be warm and cooker looking in the latter mos. The blue jersey white pants throw back's could be used at any designated time through out the year. All white; all black; blue throw back... who's offended !

This group of Bills certainly don`t deserve or represent the players who wore these jerseys back in the 60`s,not even close!

And by the way! I`m offended that during the Bills 50th year celebration not one mention of there greatest coach will be mentioned or his accomplishments honored.Lou Saban will always be the finest coach Buffalo ever had.

Agreed. They need to make these the permanent home and away jerseys! much better! if you recall, they changed to red helmets back in the early eighties because every team in their division had white helmets. (pats, dolphins, jets, colts) thus, many interceptions by the then joe feguson made them change to the red helmets.

They should change their unis kind of how the chargers did. With a mix between the classic and current unis. Go with the old school jerseys but use the new bill logo on the helmet. That way you get the best of both worlds

reignman, i was thinking what you wrote. mjd i would think , as an individual who makes a living writing about football you would do your homework. Ralph Wilson grew up in detriot, silver was a tip of the cap to the lions, which by the way he had a small share in.

Another tip of the cap to the lions: being mediocre, perpetually. Maybe we should start looking to some other teams for inspiration.
