While the NFL continues to consider what to do about Chad Ocho Cinco, formerly Chad Johnson, two sources said Reebok is quickly making jerseys bearing his new name and the Cincinnati Bengals are getting his new uniform ready for the season opener at Baltimore.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Tuesday, "As far as the name on the jersey, we have not yet addressed it."
The word "yet" would seem to indicate that the league will have some say on Ocho Cinco's new moniker. Ocho Cinco has a long history of butting heads with the league over his touchdown celebrations and other antics. Johnson said recently that he's not even sure how many times he has been fined by the league.
As for the name change, a person close to Ocho Cinco said there is really nothing the league can do about it. The only rule anyone close to Johnson is aware of is that a player must go by his legal name.
Last week, Ocho Cinco officially changed his name from Johnson after filing paperwork with the state of Florida, where he was born.
Aiello said there "are no NFL rules pertaining to a player changing his name … several players have legally changed their names over the years."
In this case, however, Ocho Cinco has changed his name for the sake of marketing and entertainment, not because of something more common such as the adoption of a different religion or the recognition of family.
