Younger Toews heading to CHL?

New York Islanders draft choice David Toews has had a tough act to follow in hockey, being the brother of Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews.

It appears David Toews' NCAA stint at North Dakota, where his brother starred, is over and he'll try to catch on with a Canadian Hockey League team as an overage player.

"Sophomore forward David Toews will leave UND for Canadian major juniors, sources say. No move has been announced as of yet, but it is expected to come within a couple of weeks.

"Toews, a third-round pick of the New York Islanders, got off to a blistering start last season. He scored 10 points in the first nine games.

"His fortunes soured at the end of the season, though. Toews finished the season on a 24-game goal drought and was scratched for 10 of the team’s last 14 games." (Grand Forks Herald)

Coming Down The Pipe! reports Toews' CHL rights are still held by his home province's team, the Brandon Wheat Kings. The Wheaties, having loaded up for their MasterCard Memorial Cup run, have 10 1990-birthdate players, so there's a numbers game shaping up for their three overage spots in 2010-11. Hard to imagine a player who has not played in the league squeezing in there.
